Das Buch führt in die 'Soziologie der Bildung und Erziehung' ein. Hier wird der Konflikt zwischen den Fächern Soziologie und Erziehungswissenschaft als Ausgangspunkt genommen, um die Grundthesen von Klassikern und zeitgenössischen Theoretikern sowie die aktuellen Debatten vorzustellen. Besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die Beziehung zwischen sozialer Ungleichheit und dem Bildungsprozess gelegt. Neue Diskurse um Raum und neue Medien werden erstmalig im bildungssoziologischen Kontext einführend dargestellt. Die 3. Auflage wurde zudem um ein neues Kapitel zum Thema Migration erweitert.
