"Mathilda" is a novella written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, the English author best known for her iconic work, "Frankenstein." "Mathilda" was composed in 1819-1820 but was not published during Shelley's lifetime. It remained largely unknown until it was discovered and published posthumously in the mid-20th century. The novella tells the story of Mathilda, a young woman who recounts her tragic life experiences through a series of letters and narratives. Mathilda's life is marked by sorrow and isolation, stemming from her complicated relationship with her father. The story explores themes of love, guilt, and the consequences of forbidden desires. "Mathilda" is a departure from Shelley's more famous work, "Frankenstein," as it is a dark and introspective tale that delves into the psychological and emotional struggles of its protagonist. It is often considered a Gothic novella due to its melancholic and emotionally charged narrative. While "Mathilda" is not as widely read as "Frankenstein," it offers readers a glimpse into Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's talent for exploring the complexities of human nature and emotions. The novella is a poignant and introspective work that continues to be studied and appreciated for its literary merit and its contribution to the Gothic genre.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an English novelist best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, which is considered an early example of science fiction. Her work is distinguished by themes of passion, peril, independent thought, and transformation. Her tales, set against varying backdrops of mediaeval chivalry, wars and revolutions of her time, and grandiose natural scenes, represent a high point in gothic storytelling art.

The novel follows the education of a young woman under the tutelage of a tyrannical father figure. Elizabeth Raby, a six-year-old orphan, saves Rupert Falkner from suicide; Falkner then adopts her and raises her to be a model of virtue. She does, however, fall in love with Gerald Neville, whose mother Falkner had unintentionally killed years before. When Falkner is acquitted of murdering Neville's mother, Elizabeth's female values subdue the destructive impulses of the two men she loves, who reconcile and unite in domestic harmony with Elizabeth.

The Last Man is an apocalyptic science fiction novel by Mary Shelley, which was first published in 1826. The book tells of a future world that has been ravaged by a plague. The novel was harshly reviewed at the time, and was virtually unknown until a scholarly revival beginning in the 1960s. It is notable in part for its semi-biographical portraits of Romantic figures in Shelley's circle, particularly Shelley's late husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron.Mary Shelley (Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin; 30 August 1797 - 1 February 1851) was a British novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, and her mother was the philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. Until the 1970s, Mary Shelley was known mainly for her efforts to publish Percy Shelley's works and for her novel Frankenstein, which remains widely read and has inspired many theatrical and film adaptations. Recent scholarship has yielded a more comprehensive view of Mary Shelley's achievements. Scholars have shown increasing interest in her literary output, particularly in her novels, which include the historical novels Valperga (1823) and Perkin Warbeck (1830), the apocalyptic novel The Last Man (1826), and her final two novels, Lodore (1835) and Falkner (1837). Studies of her lesser-known works such as the travel book Rambles in Germany and Italy (1844) and the biographical articles for Dionysius Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia (1829-46) support the growing view that Mary Shelley remained a political radical throughout her life. Mary Shelley's works often argue that cooperation and sympathy, particularly as practised by women in the family, were the ways to reform civil society. This view was a direct challenge to the individualistic Romantic ethos promoted by Percy Shelley and the Enlightenment political theories articulated by her father, William Godwin. (Wikipedia)
