Bandello führte ein wechselvolles Leben, war mal als Erzieher, mal als Diplomat und mal als Soldat tätig. Bandello schrieb über 200 Novellen, die sich durch eine naive Darstellung sowie durch große Schlüpfrigkeit im Inhalt auszeichnen. Einige seiner Novellen dienten William Shakespeare als Vorlage für seine Stücke. Die bekannteste davon ist die über Romeo und Julia.
