This book examines the life of the sixteenth Karmapa and his contributions to the preservation and transmission of Tibetan Buddhism in exile. The author analyzes the life and activity of the Karmapa through the lens of cross-cultural interaction between Buddhism and the West with a particular focus on Asian agency.

In this study, ultralight and hydrophobic carbon aerogels were prepared from 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) for the removal of organic solvents. The morphology structure, density and chemical composition of TOCN aerogels freezed at -56°C and -196°C followed by pyrolysis were examined. The obtained carbon-based aerogels possessed ultralight density of 8.8 mg cm-3 and excellent fire-resistant property. The high porosity (up to 99.5%) and hydrophobic property (contact angle of 139.6°) of the obtained carbon aerogels allowed them to adsorb various organic solvents with high absorption capacity (up to 110-260 g/g). After five absorption-combustion and absorption-distillation cycles, the absorption capacity of TOCN carbon aerogels exhibited excellent recyclability with up to 64-99% of its initial absorption capability, demonstrating potential applications in oil-spill cleanup field.

This book serves as a solid ground for seeking strategies to build the compact city that situated in a specific local area, based on the systematic examination of the effects of spatial planning system on urbanization control. Furthermore, the critical problems in the urban planning process are revealed, and the possible approaches to improve the local planning system toward effectively promoting more compact development are discussed. This book also provides a comprehensive picture for understanding the mutual influences between the planning, its implementation, and urban developments, particularly in the context of cities of western China, while these cities are experiencing dramatic urban growth in recent years but walking into a quite different development path comparing to the eastern mega cities.In nearly two decades, government officials, professional planners, scholars of urban studies, citizens who concern sustainable development are talking about the compact city,a promising vision for sustaining our growing or shrinking cities. Abundance of debates fall on the images, measurement and strengths of the compact city, while the substantializing of the vision in a specific city has been barely explored.
