Recent developments in supersymmetric field theory, string theory, and brane theory have been revolutionary. The main focus of the present volume is developments of M-theory and its applications to superstring theory, quantum gravity, and the theory of elementary particles. Topics included are D-branes, boundary states, and world volume solitons. Anti-De-Sitter quantum field theory is explained, emphasising the way it can enforce the holography principle, together with the relation to black hole physics and the way Branes provide the microscopic interpretation for the entropy of black holes. Developments in D-branes within type-I superstring and related theories are described. There are also possible phenomenological implications of superstring theory that would lie within the range of quantum gravity effects in the future generation of accelerators, around 1 TeV.

MILNSBRIDGE DRILL HALL WAR MEMORIAL 1914-1921The Milnsbridge Drill Hall War Memorial was designed and sculpted by George Iredale in 1921. It was unveiled and dedicated on 3rd December, 1921. The memorial tablets were moved from Milnsbridge Drill Hall on its closure in the 1950s and moved to St Pauls Street Drill Hall. As with the 5th Battalion War memorial, already in the Drill Hall it was noted that very little was known about those who were commemorated on the seven stone tablets, even though their Army numbers were shown with their names and initials. However, this did not reduce the complexity of the research and many anomalies cropped up, not helped at all by the random way the names had been added to the tablets at the time it was produced.As with the 5th Battalion War Memorial, some names had been omitted which could or should have been commemorated alongside the 840 original names. There were twenty one names and details of these men are included as an appendix in this book. The Huddersfield Drill Hall Trustees have again approved the commissioning of the addition of these names to appear alongside those of their comrades. This work is to be unveiled and dedicated in December, 2021.It is hoped that the information that has been collected will help the families of the fallen to research their forebears.Lest We Forget.

The murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 is one of the most famous events in English history, creating shock waves which reverberated across Europe. His shrine at Canterbury (destroyed in 1538) became the most famous in Christendom, and after his canonisation the cult of St Thomas of Canterbury was the most important of any English saint. Millions of pilgrims have made the journey to Canterbury Cathedral to visit the shrine and the site of the martyrdom. In modern times his life and death have been celebrated in music, literature, theatre and film. A brilliant young man, he studied in London and Paris, and after entering the service of Archbishop Theobald of Canterbury, in Bologna and Auxerre. He accompanied Theobald to Rome to enlist the support of Pope Eugenius III for Henry Plantagenet's claim to the English throne, and after Henry's accession as Henry II in 1154 Thomas became the new king's Chancellor.Becket's relations with Henry deteriorated after 1162, when he unwillingly accepted the position of Archbishop of Canterbury, and championed the rights of the Church in opposition to the wishes of the king.
