Elementary number theory is concerned with the arithmetic properties of the ring of integers, Z, and its field of fractions, the rational numbers, Q. Early on in the development of the subject it was noticed that Z has many properties in common with A = IF[T], the ring of polynomials over a finite field. Both rings are principal ideal domains, both have the property that the residue class ring of any non-zero ideal is finite, both rings have infinitely many prime elements, and both rings have finitely many units. Thus, one is led to suspect that many results which hold for Z have analogues of the ring A. This is indeed the case. The first four chapters of this book are devoted to illustrating this by presenting, for example, analogues of the little theorems of Fermat and Euler, Wilson's theorem, quadratic (and higher) reciprocity, the prime number theorem, and Dirichlet's theorem on primes in an arithmetic progression. All these results have been known for a long time, but it is hard to locate any exposition of them outside of the original papers. Algebraic number theory arises from elementary number theory by con- sidering finite algebraic extensions K of Q, which are called algebraic num- ber fields, and investigating properties of the ring of algebraic integers OK C K, defined as the integral closure of Z in K.

Michael Rosen writes:"In 1997 I completed a Ph.D. on the subject of authoring a piece of children's literature - a book of poems that was eventually published as 'You Wait Till I'm Older Than You' (Puffin). In the thesis I tried to put to one side mystical and Romantic ideas around creating poetry and instead, locate the whole process in reality. This is in defiance of a very different idea which refuses or defers reality, arguing that all that we know is what we say and write. So I first wanted to make the argument that reality does indeed exist and I (along with all other human beings) have a specific place in it. There is also the matter of how we perceive and produce texts, through what has come to be known as 'intertextuality', along with the question of how we integrate audience to what and how we write. I sought to bring together these different processes and then by using them as critical tools, set about examining how I came to write a group of poems. Going through all this, led me to the conclusion that I had nudged myself towards a Marxist theory of authorship and that I had demonstrated its method in such a way that others could adopt it, adapt it and use it."

This second edition contains two new chapters that provide a complete proof of the Mordel-Weil theorem for elliptic curves over the rational numbers and an overview of recent progress on the arithmetic of elliptic curves.

Dr Rosen's conclusion to this book is that all attempts at rehabilitation of Hegel are based on misunderstanding. When restored to their speculative-mystical shell the irrational kernel of Hegel's concepts becomes apparent.
