This book investigates early modern women's interventions in politics and the public sphere during times of civil war in England and France. it elucidates their historical specificity as well as the transhistorical context of civil war, a context which, it argues, enabled women's participation in political thought.

Considering as evidence literary texts, historical documents and material culture, this study examines the entry into public political culture of women and apprentices in 17th-century England, and their use of discursive and literary forms in advancing an imaginary of political equality.
