Les Règles de la méthode sociologique, publié en 1895 par Émile Durkheim dans la Revue philosophique, constitue l'ouvrage où le projet sociologique de l'auteur, considéré comme le père de la sociologie française, apparaît clairement. Il cherche en effet à fonder la sociologie comme une science nouvelle et à l'établir institutionnellement ; ce livre répond à cette ambition où il définit les règles méthodologiques à suivre pour une étude sociologique.Pour devenir une science, la sociologie doit répondre à deux conditions :Elle doit avoir un objet d'étude spécifique, c'est-à-dire que pour obtenir une légitimité académique, elle doit se distinguer des autres sciences (philosophie, psychologie) : la sociologie serait l'étude du fait social ;Elle doit mettre en oeuvre une méthode de recherche scientifique, rigoureuse, objective, qui se rapproche le plus possible des sciences exactes (comme la biologie) de manière à se détacher le plus possible des prénotions, des préjugés, de la subjectivité produites par l'expérience ordinaire et vulgaire : la sociologie se devra d'étudier les faits sociaux comme des choses.En bref, la sociologie sera la science des faits sociaux, définie par une méthode qui lui est propre.

In the first edition of this text Durkheim outlined the core of his theory of morality and social rights which was to dominate his work until his untimely death in 1917. This second edition contains his theory of the state as a moral institution.

Moving back and forth between the history of philosophy and the contributions of philosophers in his own day, Durkheim takes up topics as diverse as philosophical psychology, logic, ethics, and metaphysics, and seeks to articulate a unified philosophical position. Remarkably, in these lectures, given more than a decade before the publication of his groundbreaking book, The Division of Labour in Society (1893), the 'social realism' that is so characteristic of his later work - where he insists, famously, that social facts cannot be reduced to psychological or economic ones, and that such facts constrain human action in important ways - is totally absent in these early lectures. For this reason, they will be of special interest to students of the history of the social sciences, for they shed important light on the course of Durkheim's intellectual development.

Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws (1748) is one of the outstanding works of modern social thought. Durkheim's Latin thesis (1892) is not only one of the outstanding interpretations of that work, but also a seminal statement of his own ideas on society and on sociological method. It was the companion thesis to The Division of Labour and a forerunner of The Rules of Sociological Method. This is the first English translation directly from the original Latin text, and also includes the original text, along with full editorial notes, a related article by Durkheim on Hyppolite Taine and a commentary on Durkheim and Montesquieu by W. Watts Miller.

This 1972 book is a collection of Durkheim's writings drawing upon the whole body of his work. Dr Giddens takes his selections from a wide variety of sources and includes a number of items from untranslated writings in the Revue Philosophique, Annee Sociologique and from L'evolution pedagogue en France. Selections from previously translated writings have been checked against the originals and amended or re-translated where necessary. Dr Giddens arranges his selections thematically rather than chronologically. However, extracts from all phases of Durkheim's intellectual career are represented, giving the date of their first publication, which makes the evolution of his thought easily traceable. In his introduction Dr Giddens discusses phases in the interpretation of Durkheim's thought, as well as the main themes in his work, with an analysis of the effects of his thinking on modern sociology. The book is for students at any level taking courses in sociology, social anthropology and social theory in which Durkheim is one of the major writers studied.
