Like many of America's greatest cultural exports, the modern short story grew out of necessity rather than a luxury. At the turn of the 19th Century, the United States was a burgeoning country with pathfinders and adventure-seekers pushing their way into the west in search of new opportunities. With so much of the American population constantly on the move from one town to the next, the serialized novel was not a viable form of literature as it was across Europe. The new literary form soon grew popular; and more and more writers started writing in this wonderfully entertaining form. This collection comprises the best and the most popular short stories from the land.

First published in 1850, "The Scarlet Letter" is the work that would establish Nathaniel Hawthorne's literary legacy. It is the story of Hester Prynne, a young attractive woman who has been convicted of the crime of adultery and has been sentenced to wear a scarlet letter "A" sewn to her dress. As the result of the affair, Hester has a child named Pearl and because the man with whom she has committed this act refuses to come forward she finds herself having to raise the child alone. The novel, which is set in middle 17th century Boston, is a vivid picture of the archaic social beliefs and customs that were indicative of early colonial American life. It is a time when extreme puritanical beliefs ruled everyday life, in which adultery was not only considered immoral but a crime. Hawthorne's narrative is an exploration of the nature of sin, guilt, and the way in which society tries to police morality through the rule of law. A haunting portrait of days long past, "The Scarlet Letter" is a brilliant portrayal of life in Puritanical America. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

¿The style of Hawthorne is purity itself. His tone is singularly effective-wild, plaintive, thoughtful, and in full accordance with his themes.¿- Edgar Allan Poe¿To this little book we would say ¿Live ever, sweet, sweet book.¿ It comes from the hand of a man of genius.¿-Henry Wadsworth LongfellowNathaniel Hawthorne¿s Twice-Told Tales is a spectacularly rich collection of thirty-nine penetrating stories. With a rare purity of style, these tales chronicle both familiar life and haunted specters through a lens of subtle mysticism and deep melancholy. The title is a nod to Shakespeare¿s line ¿Life is a tedious as a twice-told tale/Vexing the ear of a drowsy man.¿; it furthermore is Hawthorne¿s acknowledgment that these stories all had been previously published in various magazines and newspapers of the day.Never one to shy from exploring themes of darkness and morality, these stories beg for repeated readings in order to fully grasp their true richness; yet, there is a sheer enjoyment in the subtle, truly imaginative beauty in each one. Amongst this collection are the tales ¿The Ambitious Guest,¿ ¿The Minister¿s Black Veil,¿ ¿The May-Pole of Merry Mount,¿ ¿The Hollow of Three Hills,¿ ¿The Haunted Mind,¿ and ¿Dr. Heidegger¿s Experiment¿ which was adapted into the 1963 Horror Film starring Vincent Price. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Twice-Told Tales is both modern and readable.

Independent, beautiful, and sharpminded, Emma Woodhouse loves to interfere in the romances of those she holds dear, but her meddlesome ways often land her in many comically tight spots. When Emma's close friend and trusted companion, Miss Taylor, marries a neighbouring widower, the wealthy young lady is left with her father as her only friend. Having renounced the idea of her own marriage, Emma turns her attentions to matchmaking. Despite her best intentions, she's often careless and selfish, and her interference in the love lives of others forces her to address issues she's been trying her upmost to ignore. Set in the fictional English country village of Highbury and its surrounding estates, Emma is Jane Austen's most-beloved comedy and explores the pressured lives of Georgian-Regency women. First published in 1815, this romantic comedy of misunderstandings, pride, and friendship is a wonderfully lighthearted read.

"The dangers of a concentration of all power in the general government of a confederacy so vast as ours are too obvious to be disregarded. You have a right, therefore, to expect your agents in every department to regard strictly the limits imposed upon them by the Constitution of the United States. The great scheme of our constitutional liberty rests upon a proper distribution of power between the State and Federal authorities, and experience has shown that the harmony and happiness of our people must depend upon a just discrimination between the separate rights and responsibilities of the States and your common rights and obligations under the General Government; and here, in my opinion, are the considerations which should form the true basis of future concord in regard to the questions which have most seriously disturbed public tranquillity. If the Federal Government will confine itself to the exercise of powers clearly granted by the Constitution, it can hardly happen that its action upon any question should endanger the institutions of the States or interfere with their right to manage matters strictly domestic according to the will of their own people" (Excerpt taken from Pierce's Presidential Inaugural Address). In his inaugural address, Franklin Pierce spoke much of the constitution, and the limits placed upon the Federal Government. And thus he was able to preserve the Union for the time being from the Civil War that would follow soon after. But what kind of a man was he? In this book you will experience the richness of Hawthorne's writing as he presents to you the democrat candidate for the presidency of 1852, just as he did to the people of that time so long ago. This book was written by Hawthorne prior to the election of 1852, as a portrayal for the American people to see who Franklin Pierce was. And it is in this book you will be introduced to a man who was in every respect admired, cherished, and beneficial to the people of his time.
