Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Biographies, grade: 1,3, University of Kent (Department of International Relations), language: English, abstract: The essay will outline how Mahatma Gandhi¿s and Nelson Mandeläs childhood and upbringing prepared them for future roles. It will look at the two political leaders within the time period of Mandeläs upbringing until his imprisonment and concerning Gandhi from his birth until the liberation of India. Therefore, will this essay focus on their family background and their schooling in order to answer the question raised. Later on, will the author draw comparisons between the two of them and intend to illustrate how their early experiences influenced their political actions. In particular how it shaped and predetermined their attitude towards non-violent protest. This is of importance in order to portray the lives of these two figures who shaped the history of the 20th like no other in an unpreceded, unique and non-violent manner. They both liberated their nation from enormous burdens, which had their cause and origin in the colonial past of the nations. Gandhi like Mandela enabled their nation to self-agency to overcome the suppressive colonial system, whereas Mandela succeeded in overcoming the racist system of apartheid. The political leaders had both encountered racism only after they grew up and had therefore and idea that racism and suppression is not natural status and they therefore turned against racism. Gandhi is often referred to as the father of post-colonial India, and is perceived as one of the leading examples of practiced nonviolence as a form of conflict management and overcoming injustice. The public¿s interest in his life and his concept of non-violence has been enormous even after his death. Especially, since several groups have referred to his concrete examples of non-violent civil disobedience.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, University of Kent (Department of International Relations), language: English, abstract: This essay intends to answer the question whether Europe is secular or religious. In both the European treaties and the accession criteria to the European Union there are no references to a historical and cultural community to describe the European polity. Article 6 of the Treaty on European states: ¿The Union is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law, principles which are common to the Member States¿. No references to the Christian roots of Europe in the draft treaty establishing a constitution for Europe (European Constitution, only a general reference to its religious heritage). The background provided in the introduction states the importance to deal with the subject and finally raises the question. Europe claims to be secular, but its moral values are too closely bind towards its Judeo-Christian heritage to act without showing religious bias. Therefore, my thesis statement will be: Even though the states of the EU have secular constitutions, the shared Christian roots of the member states of the European Union and the notion of believing without belonging which is shared by the majority of the European population leads to religiously motivated policy of the member states.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,7, University of Kent, language: English, abstract: What is Constitutional Patriotism? How is it used in his three speeches to gather the spirits of the Americans? How does the notion of nation state differ between the EU and the United States?According to Ernest Gellner ¿It is nationalism which engenders nations, and not the other way round.¿ Surely most nations were formed on a nationalistic idea, but with nationalism follows patriotism and a sense of proselytisation. First of all what is a nation and why is it of relevance for today's international system?A nation defines itself through its territory, its culture and its political community which is represented and run by a sovereign organized government. The unite state acts motivated by self interests. States are the most common structure of state organisation in the international system. They enjoy independence and legitimacy. Nation states are of extraordinary relevance for the field of international relations because they are more robust once they are established based on a distinct nationality. Moreover, it is the only structure in which ¿the growth of democracy is possible and which does not have a tendency to expand its territory.¿ This strong and steady status of nations turned out to be crucial for the development of ¿modern financial, industrial and technological civilization in Western Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.¿It was only in the 16th and 17th century that the people of a state obtained the right to choose their representatives, before that they were ¿subjects¿ to the ruler of the state. ¿States ruled in that way had seven different forms, personal rule, theocracy, city state, oligarchy, military state, tribal state, and empire.¿

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Russia, grade: 1,7, University of Kent (Brussels School of International Studies), language: English, abstract: The Ukraine crisis reached its peak point with the Russian annexation of the Crimea peninsula at the beginning of 2014. The annexation has since marked a turning point in the Russian-Western relations. Russia has disrespected international laws and norms, and thereby questioned the European order. The crisis reflects a significant shift in European geopolitics. It is a symptom amongst others of the long-term development in the Russian-Western relations. The crisis has exposed how vulnerable the post-Cold War European order is. The crisis management of the Weimar Triangle and Visegrad Group has not been fruitful. Indeed, the only forum which has succeeded in keeping the Russian-Western dialogue alive has been the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). It is the largest regional security organization in the world comprising fifty-seven member states from Europe, Northern America, and Asia. The organization bases its work on the shared values of its member states and aims to promote peace, security, and democracy.Since the organization is so central to the conflict, the research question aims to explain Russiäs attitude towards the OSCE during the Ukraine crisis by asking: What was the Russian attitude towards the OSCE during the Ukraine crisis from 2013-2016? In support of the research question the paper will refer to Russiäs behavior towards other states on the former Soviet territory in order to draw parallels to the approach towards Ukraine before 2013 to establish an understanding of Russiäs general stances on the intergovernmental organization and the development of the relations.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 1,0, University of Kent (Brussels School of International Studies), course: EU Politics and Governance class, language: English, abstract: This essay will examine the policy making process in the European Union (EU) concerning food safety in the case of raw milk cheese production. Food safety has been a key concern of the EU after several food scandals at the end of the 90¿s such as the mad cow disease or more recently the usage of falsely labeled horse meat. As a reaction to that, the focus shifted from the creation of a common food market to food safety. The case of raw milk cheese is in so far an interesting one because it symbolizes a dilemma for the EU. Firstly, because the milk that is used for the production is untreated. Untreated milk can be the cause of several diseases, yet this kind of cheese is deeply rooted in the culture of especially southern European cuisine. Secondly, the common market aims to standardized products with the aim to create an even bigger, more prosperous market and integrated market. However, the standardization takes place at the expense of product variety and the livelihood of small dairy farmers. The challenging task for the union is to find a compromise between these driving factors.

Essay from the year 2016 in the subject History Europe - Germany - World War I, Weimar Republic, grade: 2,0, University of Kent (Brussels School of International Relations), language: English, abstract: The following essay finds its niche in intending to shed light on the question as to why the United Kingdom entered the First World War.Firstly, in the background analysis, the political causes that lead to the formal declaration of war of the UK against the middle powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy) will be analysed. Secondly, the first deployment of British troops will be looked at as a direct result of the declaration. The subject will be approached from two sides, firstly from the Neoclassical perspective. Asking in how far political power struggles considerations resulted in the decision to join the war. Especially, the Triple Entente alliance (UK, France, and Russia), and the ¿Treaty of London of 1839¿ which played a crucial role in the British decision to join the war will be analysed. The UK found itself in a duty bound situation to "defense the Belgian neutrality." The two agreements will be used as part of the explanation as to why and how the UK joined the war, they will be examined through the sense of both school of thoughts.Secondly, the Liberal school of thought will lend its self to the explanation. The ideas of Kant will be tested as to whether they can explain the British participation in the war. The concept of international cooperation, the duty to uphold contracts and the internal logic that democracy and free trade spreads are part of the train of thought of this paper.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 2,0, University of Kent (Brussels School of International Studies), language: English, abstract: The use of drones opens a new chapter in the law of armed conflict (LAC) and International humanitarian law (IHL). The hypothetical scenario for the sake of argument will be: An Al Qaida leader who has been taking part in combat is found in the streets of Kabul. He is surrounded by civilians, and he is wearing civilian clothing himself and is not currently involved in combative activities. A targeted killing through a drone strike is possible but would bring civilian causalities with it. This case brings with itself several legal issues, which will be explored in this paper.
