Essay aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Englisch - Landeskunde, Note: 1,3, University of Ulster, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: On June 6, 1944 the ¿greatest amphibious attack in history¿ took place: the Normandy was invaded in order to free France from German suppression. Thus, this historical event provides both an interesting subject and a richness of material for movie-makers. One movie that tries to depict this historical day is Saving Private Ryan, the historical accuracy of which is to be examined in this essay. At first, the period of time in which the movie is set will be examined and the depiction of the landing at Omaha beach will be observed in detail. Afterwards, the historical accuracy of the plot presented in this movie will be analyzed. The essay will conclude by illuminating the different messages the movie tries to convey.

Essay aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Englisch - Landeskunde, Note: 1,0, University of Ulster, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In the opinion of Robin Mayhead, one of the quintessential aspects of the literary method of Sir Walter Scott is its ¿bringing together of incongruously disparate worlds¿. This statement is to be examined on the example of his first novel Waverley in the following essay, by proving its truth in several aspects. First of all, Scott¿s use of contrast in the novel¿s plot will be observed, since there are two plots to be found in Waverley, which develop on different scales but which are still unified. Afterwards, the focus of interest will be the fictional world surrounding the protagonist. In this section, contrasting pairs of characters will be examined. Particular attention will be paid to the setting since its contrasting features underline symbolically the characters¿ oppositions. Moreover, the contrasts between England and Scotland will be of interest. After having studied the contrasts displayed in the fictional world itself, the focus will be on the narrator. Finally, the essay will conclude by considering the literary context in which the novel was written and the ¿disparate worlds¿ that influenced Scott¿s writing.

Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Ulster, language: English, abstract: February 9, 1950, Wheeling, West Virginia: Joseph R. McCarthy, senator of Wisconsin, gives a speech at a meeting of the Republican Women¿s Club, claiming that he owns a list of 205 names of members of the Communist party who are employed in the State Department. Although the number of the names changes with the place where the speech is given, the press is electrified by his claims and the senator soon personifies American anti-Communism.In order to explain the circumstances under which it was possible to persecute and harass American citizens in the way McCarthy did after his speech had been successful, a closer look at the decades previous to McCarthy¿s appearance is necessary. Therefore, this essay will first focus on the Red Scare of 1919-20, since it can serve ¿both as an analogy and a legacy¿ for the events to come. Afterwards the ¿little red scare¿ of the thirties will be examined, since anti-Communist sentiments aroused again under Franklin D Roosevelt¿s New Deal programme. During the ¿little red scare¿, anti-Communism was rather a domestic issue. Therefore, it could easily be ended by the 2nd World War, since foreign affairs dominated American politics then. However, the following section will focus on the aftermath of the 2nd World War, since several events in Americäs foreign policy transferred the anti-Communist sentiments to being international concerns. Thus, the years directly preceding McCarthy¿s speech will be examined in detail. Particular attention will be paid to McCarthy himself and the reasons for his success. Finally, the essay will conclude by answering the question whether or not it is accurate to describe the so-called ¿Red Scare¿ as McCarthyism.

Essay aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Englisch - Landeskunde, Note: 1,5, University of Ulster, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: When Irish nationalists wanted to introduce Home Rule, Ulster Unionists found a variety of reasons to prevent it. There were both moderate opponents to Home Rule as well as rather radical ones. Therefore, various arguments can be found, some of which are based on an objective examination of the Irish question, while others rely on subjective views and personal feelings. Among the arguments that were based on rather individual perceptions was the probably most salient argument: the religious objection to Home Rule. Loyalty towards the Protestant British monarchy and family ties resulting from British or Scottish ancestors were further reasons to resist Home Rule. As a result of the family ties within the Union, many Ulster Unionists felt that there were two nations in Ireland, which strengthened their opposition to the Nationalists¿ demands even more. Apart from these arguments which are based on the Unionists¿ individual perceptions, there were also objections which were based on a fear of the consequences for an independent Ireland both in terms of domestic matters and in terms of foreign policy. These rather objective arguments involve economic and financial objections to Home Rule as well as concerns about Ireland¿s military position. This essay will first examine the objections that were based on Ulster Unionists personal fears then go on by observing the concerns about the consequences for a self-governed Ireland in terms of domestic matters and foreign policy and finally conclude by judging about the validity of the arguments.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: Proseminar I: Postmodern American Novel, language: English, abstract: Satire, sarcasm, irony ¿ these are all related stylistic devices but there are crucial differences. Both satire and sarcasm generally ridicule human behaviour but only the satire implies the intent of improving the ridiculed behaviour. Irony on the other hand includes an incongruity or a connection that goes beyond the most obvious meaning and can therefore be used to underline the ridicule of the satire or the sarcasm. In White Noise DeLillo uses the satire to ridicule human behaviour in four different respects: to satirize the human behaviour related to consumerism, to satirize the human behaviour that is determined by the media, to satirize the behaviour of the novel¿s characters in their role in the family and to satirize Jack¿s academic life by depicting the lack of seriousness in his studies. However, DeLillo not only uses the satire to ridicule the behaviour of the novel¿s protagonist and his family but also shows the difficulties that arise when trying to improve the satirized behaviour.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: Proseminar I: Contrastive Linguistics, language: English, abstract: As English and German are both Germanic languages they are closely related. However, there are still a lot of differences to be found when comparing the two languages. This is among other things due to the fact that English and German represent different language types. Among the grammatical categories relating to which the two languages can be analysed, tense and aspect are certainly salient. Before starting to analyse both languages with regard to these categories, the difference between tense and aspect has to be clarified. Tense is both a deictic and a relational category. Therefore it locates an event on the time line usually with reference to the time of speaking. Aspect, by contrast, does not locate an event or situation on the time line nor does it relate the time of one situation to another. It is rather concerned with ¿the internal temporal constituency of one situation¿. This term paper will examine how English and German differ in their use and expression of tense and aspect taking the perspective of a learner. First the three stages of tense and aspect acquisition by learners will be described in general terms. Particular attention will be paid to the influence of instruction on the learners. Then this term paper will examine how English and German differ in their use of tense. This will be illustrated on the example of the different uses of the perfect. Afterwards the focus will be on aspect. While English uses the progressive to indicate a change of aspect, there is no such formal equivalent in the German language. Therefore German learners of English are confronted with the question of how to express this ¿internal constituency of one situation¿ in their mother tongue. Various devices that are used by German learners of English to express the progressive will be exemplified. Both the section on tense and the section on the progressive will conclude with a focus on the difficulties for and the typical errors made by the learners. However, as there is no material available concerning English learners of German, only the German learners of English will be taken into account.
