L'India è considerata il "paese delle carpe", in quanto le carpe dominano la produzione interna. Sul totale della produzione indiana di acquacoltura, le carpe contribuiscono per circa il 90% (FAO, 2000) e le principali specie che contribuiscono alla produzione sono le carpe indiane maggiori (catla, rohu e mrigal). Tra le carpe esotiche, la carpa argentata, la carpa erbivora e la carpa comune rappresentano la maggior parte della produzione. Tra le carpe maggiori indiane, il rohu è la specie preferita e contribuisce a circa il 35% della produzione indiana di carpe maggiori (FAO, 2000). È considerata la più gustosa tra le carpe. Le proteine alimentari contribuiscono per oltre il 60% al costo della dieta. La scelta di una proteina dietetica costosa dipende da una decisione economica determinata dal costo della fonte proteica e dai rendimenti attesi dalla crescita del pesce e dal suo valore. In questo libro si è cercato di studiare l'effetto dell'integrazione di scarti di macellazione nella dieta di ditalini di rohu (Labeo rohita) sulla sopravvivenza, la crescita e l'utilizzo dei nutrienti e di valutare il fabbisogno ottimale di proteine in relazione alla performance di crescita, sostituendo la farina di pesce intera con proteine vegetali e animali e fortificandola con micronutrienti.

India is regarded as ¿carp country¿ as carps dominate in its inland production. Out of Indiäs total aquaculture production carp contribute around 90% (FAO, 2000) and the major species, which contribute to the production are Indian Major Carps (catla, rohu and mrigal). Among exotic carps, silver carp, grass carp and common carp account for bulk of the production. Among Indian Major Carps, rohu is the most preferred species and contributes about 35% of the Indian Major Carps production (FAO, 2000). It is considered to be most tasty among the carps. The dietary protein contributes to over 60% of the diet cost. The choice of expensive dietary protein is dependent on economic decision which is determined by the cost of protein source as well as on the expected returns from fish growth and its value. In this book an attempt was made to study the effect of slaughterhouse waste supplementation in the diet of rohu (Labeo rohita) fingerlings on survival, growth and nutrient utilization and to evaluate the optimum requirement of protein in relation to growth performance replacing whole fish meal with plant and animal protein and fortifying it with micronutrients.
