Rafael Sabatini penned the historical novel Bellarion the Fortunate. The story opens with Bellarion, a young man who was abandoned as a child and educated in an abbey, leaving with a letter of introduction from the revered abbot and plans to attend Pavia University. He meets and travels with a Franciscan friar but learns that his money and letter have been stolen. As he arrives at Casale, the state's capital, he discovers that he is being sought by the authorities. He runs away till he arrives at a palace, where he enters via a garden entrance that, to his surprise, is unlocked. A stunning woman welcomes him inside, locks the door, and makes an effort to hide him from his assailants. Later, the plot follows Bellarion's career as he grows to be Facino Cane's loyal and true son and, after Facino's death, pledges loyalty to his widow. The story takes several unexpected turns as Bellarion rises through the ranks to become a significant mercenary captain.

Blood escapes his captivity and then embarks on a career as a pirate before clearing his name and returning to England to be reunited with the love of his life, Arabella Bishop.A rollicking tale of piracy on a grand scale, this is the classic novel of maritime adventure and romance.Sabatini dramatically brings the past to life with great accuracy and his swashbuckling tale bristles with excitement as we follow the high seas adventures of his honourable hero, Captain Blood. The book was the basis for the Hollywood film version starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Haviland.'Glorious... I have never enjoyed a novel more than Captain Blood' - Norman Mailer¿¿. ¿'Captain Blood is the very beau ideal of a pirate' - New York Times Book Review. 'Buckles never swashed more dashingly' - John Sutherland.Captain Blood is marked by its exciting high seas adventures, exotic locations, historical elements, clever characters, romance, and its generous contribution of swashbuckling.

Sabatini's heroes are so quick-witted and hilariously sarcastic. He's at ease in virtually every situation but his love life. And it NEVER gets old. The historical accuracy of a time period in which kings are in exile, rebellions are beginning, and loyalties are being questioned--how easily a tale of vengeance can unravel. But it's more complicated than that. It's how Sabatini likes it. And it's how I like it. This man is one of the most entertaining historical authors in the history of the genre. ...(Karen)

The Strolling Saint, first published in 1913, is a swashbuckler romance set in 16th century Italy. There is a strong underlying theme of religious hypocrisy, as the main character is forced into a career in the clergy, before having to fight the church to regain his inheritance. All par for the course for Rafael Sabatini ... (Robert Hepple)

A gripping, romantic masterpiece, which starts a little slowly, then generates such suspense that it is a real page turner. Adventure, romance and brilliant writing. This is possibly my favourite Sabatini, although the two Scaramouche books, and the Venetian Masque are strong contenders.
