La virtualisation permet aux utilisateurs d'abstraire le système d'exploitation et les logiciels d'application du matériel réel. Pour pouvoir fonctionner dans une architecture virtuelle, les utilisateurs utilisent des outils logiciels de virtualisation pour créer des machines virtuelles qui "agissent comme un véritable ordinateur doté d'un système d'exploitation". La virtualizzazione consente agli utenti di astrarre il sistema operativo e il software applicativo dall'hardware reale. Per poter funzionare in un'architettura virtuale, gli utenti applicano strumenti software di virtualizzazione per creare macchine virtuali che "si comportano come un vero computer con un sistema operativo". Una o più macchine virtuali, anche con diversi tipi e classi di sistemi operativi, possono essere eseguite sotto lo stesso hypervisor.

Die Virtualisierung ermöglicht es den Benutzern, das Betriebssystem und die Anwendungssoftware von der realen Hardware zu abstrahieren. Um in einer virtuellen Architektur arbeiten zu können, verwenden Benutzer Virtualisierungssoftware-Tools, um virtuelle Maschinen zu erstellen, die sich wie ein echter Computer mit einem Betriebssystem verhalten".
