Pour Frankl, la question du sens n'est pas un sujet philosophique réservé à des cercles de patients élitistes. Au contraire, elle revêt une importance vitale pour chaque homme et n'est donc pas conditionnée par l'âge ou le sexe, le milieu culturel ou la formation intellectuelle. Tout homme s'interroge - consciemment ou inconsciemment - sur le sens, parce qu'il croit au sens "qu'il le veuille ou non", dit Frankl, "et même s'il le nie, l'homme croit au sens jusqu'à son dernier souffle". La personne suicidaire croit également au sens, sinon de la vie, du moins de la survie à la mort. S'il ne croyait pas vraiment à un sens, il ne serait plus capable de bouger un doigt". For Frankl, the question of meaning is not merely a philosophical topic for elitist circles of patients. On the contrary, it has vital significance for every man and is therefore not conditioned by age or gender, cultural background or intellectual training. Every man asks himself - consciously or unconsciously - about meaning, because he believes in meaning "whether he wants to or not," says Frankl, "and although he may deny it, man believes in meaning to the last breath. The suicidal person also believes in a sense, if not of living, at least of surviving death. If he actually disbelieved in any meaning, he would no longer be able to move a finger." (Uwe Böschemeyer) Partindo-se das falas das profissionais da assistência social, pode-se perceber uma necessidade do humano de ser no mundo para além dos condicionantes sociais, nunca simplesmente prescindindo destes ou se afastando absolutamente do mundo social e cultural, mas gerenciando os significados que lhe são atribuídos nesse todo social e respondendo em termos de ação e significação, uma busca pelo sentido da vida.
