This short novel, published in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94), may well be more familiar in its many stage, film and television adaptations than in its original form, while 'Jekyll and Hyde' has become the shorthand for a character who seems to have a 'split personality'. Stevenson claimed that the main features of the story came to him in a dream, and he wrote it very rapidly, though ill and bedridden at the time. Priced at one shilling (the genre of macabre and horror stories was known as the 'shilling shocker'), it was an immediate success. Though not the first of Stevenson's works to explore the notion of the divided self, in a period where increasing concern was felt about the possible negative sides of discoveries in both the physical and biological sciences, the story clearly struck a chord, and it has remained popular ever since.

This collection of literary essays by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) explores the lives and works of nine writers from around the world and across the centuries, including Victor Hugo, Robert Burns, Walt Whitman and Samuel Pepys. Published together in 1882, the studies here had previously appeared in periodicals, chiefly the Cornhill Magazine, and are known for their conversational style and unusual combination of character assessment and scholarly critique. In his preface, Stevenson describes the book as 'the readings of a literary vagrant', emphasising that the essays were inspired by a genuine personal interest in the authors and their works. Over the course of his own career as a writer, Stevenson published in a wide range of literary forms and genres. Today this collection reveals much about the diversity of his influences and tastes, as well as offering an insight into his moral and aesthetic values.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), novelist and poet, was descended from a famous Scottish engineering family. His grandfather Robert, his father Thomas, two uncles and a cousin were all noted engineers, particularly known for their lighthouses. This family history, focusing particularly on his grandfather, was written while R. L. Stevenson was living in Samoa, and was published posthumously in 1912. It first outlines the history of the name 'Stevenson' from the thirteenth century. Chapter 1 begins in the mid-eighteenth century, and records Robert Stevenson's birth in 1772, and his father's death. The young Robert worked with his stepfather for the Northern Lighthouse Board and was its sole Engineer from 1808 to 1843. Chapter 2 describes his experiences in that role. Chapter 3 reproduces substantial extracts from Robert's own diary of the construction (1807-1811) of his most famous structure, the Bell Rock lighthouse off Arbroath, which revolutionised lighthouse design.

The celebrated Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson arranged for his friend the art historian Sidney Colvin to select and organise the essays in this volume, many of which had originally appeared in 1888, though some date back to the early 1880s. It was published in 1892, two years before Stevenson's untimely death. Colvin obtained many of the pieces from their original publishers, including magazines such as Fraser's, Longman's, The Magazine of Art and Scribner's. What is particularly noteworthy about this collection is that although Stevenson had settled in the South Seas well before it appeared, all the items included were written prior to his journey there. Colvin mentions that the concluding pieces in particular were written during a period of considerable gloom and sickness for Stevenson, who himself claimed to 'recover peace of body and mind' after moving to the Pacific in 1890.

Sa jambe gauche avait été coupée au niveau de la hanche. Il y suppléait par une béquille dont il se servait avec une habileté surprenante, sautant de côté et d'autre comme un oiseau."

First published in 1893, Catriona was the last novel the author completed on his own before his untimely death at 44 years of age. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Catriona is both modern and readable.

A mysterious visitor to his parent's inn precipitates a chain of events that plunges Jim Hawkins into an unforgettable adventure among ruthless pirates seeking a fabulous treasure hidden on a desert island.Initially serialized in a magazine, Treasure Island first appeared as a book in 1883. Narrated primarily by young Jim Hawkins, the book can be seen as a coming of age story or a thriller for younger readers, but it is a swashbuckling delight for most anyone willing to pick it up. One of the central pleasures of the book is the indelible character of Long John Silver. Manipulative, self-centered, and greedy enough to be purely a villain, he proves such an engaging character that it is hard to feel much ill will toward him. With his missing leg, parrot, and treasure map, Silver is the forefather of countless fictional pirates of prose and film. Treasure Island is, arguably, both the genesis and zenith of the pirate adventure story. The novel has been repeatedly adapted to stage, radio, film and television. First filmed in 1918, Treasure Island has been the subject of more than fifty movies and has been translated into science fiction, western, anime and a feature for Jim Henson's Muppets. All of this springs from the enduring base of Stevenson's original novel. This is pure storytelling at its most ageless, powerful and beguiling.Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
