This book is part of an effort to promote new environmental education strategies. For decades, the idea has been gaining momentum that the only possible way to address environmental conflicts is through environmental education. One of the most pressing of these is undoubtedly related to the treatment of wastewater and its subsequent reuse. Numerous technologies are currently available to carry out such treatment; however, not all of them are sufficiently sustainable from an environmental point of view. This book, and more specifically this chapter, which provides a relatively extensive description of the main existing biological purification systems, as well as the microbial communities responsible for it, is the first step that any Environmental Education programme must take, and which, in short, must be none other than to try to make society aware of and understand this environmental problem. This is the only way to encourage the active participation of citizens in order to build a new model of sustainable society.

Ce livre s'inscrit dans le cadre d'un effort visant à promouvoir de nouvelles stratégies d'éducation à l'environnement. Depuis des décennies, l'idée s'est imposée que le seul moyen de résoudre les conflits environnementaux est l'éducation à l'environnement. L'un des plus urgents d'entre eux est sans aucun doute lié au traitement des eaux usées et à leur réutilisation ultérieure. De nombreuses technologies sont actuellement disponibles pour effectuer ce traitement, mais toutes ne sont pas suffisamment durables d'un point de vue environnemental. Ce livre, et plus particulièrement ce chapitre qui décrit de manière relativement exhaustive les principaux systèmes d'épuration biologique existants, ainsi que les communautés microbiennes qui en sont responsables, constitue la première étape que doit franchir tout programme d'éducation à l'environnement, et qui, en définitive, ne peut être autre chose que d'essayer de sensibiliser la société à ce problème environnemental et de le lui faire comprendre. C'est la seule façon d'encourager la participation active des citoyens pour construire un nouveau modèle de société durable.

Da decenni si sta facendo strada l'idea che l'unico modo possibile per affrontare i conflitti ambientali sia l'educazione ambientale. Uno dei più urgenti è senza dubbio quello legato al trattamento delle acque reflue e al loro successivo riutilizzo. Attualmente sono disponibili numerose tecnologie per effettuare tale trattamento; tuttavia, non tutte sono sufficientemente sostenibili dal punto di vista ambientale. Questo libro, e più precisamente questo capitolo, che fornisce una descrizione relativamente ampia dei principali sistemi di depurazione biologica esistenti, nonché delle comunità microbiche che ne sono responsabili, è il primo passo che qualsiasi programma di Educazione Ambientale deve compiere e che, in sintesi, non può che essere quello di cercare di sensibilizzare e far comprendere alla società questo problema ambientale. Solo così si potrà incoraggiare la partecipazione attiva dei cittadini per costruire un nuovo modello di società sostenibile.

Seit Jahrzehnten setzt sich der Gedanke durch, dass Umweltkonflikte nur durch Umwelterziehung gelöst werden können. Einer der drängendsten ist zweifellos die Behandlung von Abwasser und seine anschließende Wiederverwendung. Für eine solche Behandlung stehen derzeit zahlreiche Technologien zur Verfügung, die jedoch nicht alle unter Umweltgesichtspunkten ausreichend nachhaltig sind. Dieses Buch und insbesondere dieses Kapitel, das eine relativ ausführliche Beschreibung der wichtigsten bestehenden biologischen Reinigungssysteme sowie der dafür verantwortlichen mikrobiellen Gemeinschaften enthält, ist der erste Schritt, den jedes Umwelterziehungsprogramm unternehmen muss, und der, kurz gesagt, kein anderer sein darf als der Versuch, die Gesellschaft für dieses Umweltproblem zu sensibilisieren und es zu verstehen. Nur so kann die aktive Beteiligung der Bürger gefördert werden, um ein neues Modell einer nachhaltigen Gesellschaft zu schaffen.
