Rudolf Christoph Eucken (5 January 1846 - 14 September 1926) was a German philosopher. He received the 1908 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his earnest search for truth, his penetrating power of thought, his wide range of vision, and the warmth and strength in presentation with which in his numerous works he has vindicated and developed an idealistic philosophy of life", after he had been nominated by a member of the Swedish Academy. Eucken received his PhD in classical philology and ancient history at Göttingen University in 1866 with a dissertation under the title ¿De Aristotelis dicendi ratione". Eucken's philosophical work is partly historical and partly constructive, the former side being predominant in his earlier, the latter in his later works. Their most striking feature is the close organic relationship between the two parts. The aim of the historical works is to show the necessary connection between philosophical concepts and the age to which they belong; the same idea is at the root of his constructive speculation. All philosophy is philosophy of life, the development of a new culture, not mere intellectualism, but the application of a vital religious inspiration to the practical problems of society. This practical idealism Eucken described by the term "ethical activism." In accordance with this principle, Eucken gave considerable attention to social and educational problems. He maintained that humans have souls, and that they are therefore at the junction between nature and spirit. He believed that people should overcome their non-spiritual nature by continuous efforts to achieve a spiritual life, another aspect of his ethical activism and meaning of life.

With the consent of the author the title "Life's Basis and Life's Ideal" has been adopted for this translation of "Die Grundlinien einer neuen Lebensanschauung," with the hope that thereby the purpose of the work will be more directly indicated than by a literal translation of the German title. It is hoped, further, that the title adopted will make an appeal to the general reading public. To make such an appeal is not the desire of every writer on philosophical subjects: but in the present instance it is the case. The author feels that he has a message for the present time, and one that is vital to the true interests of all. It has been remarked, and the present writer would be among the first to acknowledge the truth of the statement, that the voice is that of a prophet in the sense of an ethical teacher, rather than that of a philosopher in the more technical sense. Nevertheless, the use of a philosophical terminology, and the constant implicit reference to the results of philosophical endeavour in the past and present, combined with the peculiarities of the author's own views, make it difficult to understand his message. To non-philosophical readers who are not already acquainted with the more popular works which have been translated under the titles of "Christianity and the New Idealism," "The Life of the Spirit," and "The Meaning and Value of Life," the present work will appear of considerable difficulty. Difficulty in such a work is, however, by no means necessarily an evil, for it may compel more careful reading and thought. The present work is the latest and best general statement, by the author, of his philosophical position. By some reference here to certain ideas, principles, and aims of the philosophy, the attention of the reader may be drawn to those aspects which, in personal contact with the author, one comes to feel are regarded by him as of most importance. It is not invariably so, but in this case to know the man is to gain immensely in the power to understand and appreciate the message. He inspires us with his confidence and enthusiasm, even when we have doubts as to the adequacy of his philosophical creed. His philosophy is, indeed, the outcome of an attitude of life. To know the man is to understand more fully than from all his written works what he means when he speaks of the development of personality and spiritual individuality. Whatever may be the value of what is written about Professor Eucken's position, no substitute can be found for reading his own words in as many of his different expositions as possible.

Wir alle wissen, daß wir uns heute in einem Riesenkampf um unsere Existenz befinden, und wir wissen auch, daß dabei sehr unwürdige Mittel seitens unserer Feinde angewandt werden. Eins dieser unwürdigen Mittel ist die Herabsetzung des deutschen Wesens, die Verleumdung, wir wären ein reaktionäres Volk, wir wären Gegner der Freiheit und Knechte eines drückenden Militarismus, der die ganze Welt unterwerfen wolle. So scheint es, als könne Deutschland und deutsches Wesen ohne Schaden für die Menschheit ausgerottet werden. Gegenüber solcher Anfeindung müssen wir uns auf uns selbst besinnen, es gilt klarzumachen, daß wir mehr sind, als jene meinen, daß wir eine weltgeschichtliche Bedeutung haben, die uns aller Neid und Haß der Feinde nicht rauben kann.Um diese weltgeschichtliche Bedeutung der deutschen Art zu ermitteln, müssen wir zunächst überhaupt ihre Eigentümlichkeit untersuchen; diese Eigentümlichkeit ist aber nicht ganz einfach und leicht zu fassen. Denken wir nur an das 19. Jahrhundert und seinen Verlauf. Wie hat sich scheinbar das Wesen der Deutschen in ihm verändert! Ja, es mag auf den ersten Anblick scheinen, als enthielte unser Wesen einen Widerspruch, einen Widerspruch, dessen Schroffheit alle wahrhaftige Größe hindern müßte.

Die »Philosophische Terminologie« (1876) des späteren Nobelpreisträgers Rudolf Eucken gilt bis heute zu Recht als Gründungsdokument der Begriffsgeschichte, insbesondere der philosophischen. Und doch wurde der Text seit seinem ersten Erscheinen nie neu aufgelegt, sondern erschien nur als Reprint. Die Gründe dafür sind vielfältig und, was die Genese der Begriffsgeschichte als Forschungsprogramm und Methode betrifft, höchst aufschlussreich.Eucken unternimmt hier als Erster eine Gesamtdarstellung der Entwicklung der philosophischen Fachterminologie von der Antike bis in seine Zeit. Ein besonderes Kapitel ist der deutschen Terminologie gewidmet.Für die vorliegende Ausgabe wurden sämtliche terminologischen Herleitungen von auf die jeweilige Epoche bzw. Sprache spezialisierten Fachgelehrten kritisch durchgesehen und kommentiert. Die Ausgabe ist mit einer Einleitung und Begriffs- und Personenregistern versehen. Zusätzlich wird die Transkription eines in Jena archivierten Korrekturexemplars von Euckens Hand mit zahlreichen Ergänzungen zur Erstausgabe präsentiert. Mit der Neuausgabe wird Euckens für die philosophische Theorie wie philologisch-historiographische Praxis der Begriffsgeschichte bahnbrechendes, in Anspruch und Duktus weit ausgreifendes Werk für die heutige begriffsgeschichtliche Arbeit neu erschlossen.
