They showed (and still show) various features which separated them from ¿normal people¿. These characteristics can be caused by genetic defects or other, medical reasons and lead to a life ¿outside of the boundaries of ¿normal¿¿. Physically and / or mentally they differ from the majority. Some are taller than average people, some are smaller. Some are hermaphrodites. Some have missing or extra body parts, some lack extremities at all. These so called ¿freaks¿ are defined by freedictionary.com as having ¿an abnormally formed organism¿ and ¿regarded as a curiosity or monstrosity¿. Tod Browning¿s film Freaks deals with handicapped people, who comply with this definition and will be the core theme of this term paper, so that the role of monstrous bodies in this specific movie will be explained and analyzed. In order to do that, it will be started with a rendering of the movie¿s content, important basic facts about it and its¿ effect on the viewers and the critics, before the analysis will be focused. Are the ¿freaks¿ in the movie creeps and weirdos or aren¿t they and if so, what else are they if anything? What was Browning¿s aim concerning the role of the ¿freaks¿ in his movie and did he reach the goals he had in his mind or didn¿t he? As today more and more people seem to not use the right amount of punctuation marks anymore and marks like the semicolon are supposed to have died out I wondered, whether these assumptions of Lynne Truss in her brilliantly written book Eats, Shoots and Leaves (2003) are true or not. In order to test this, a survey was prepared and passed over to twelve former or actual students of English ¿ many of whom plan to become a teacher or are already working as teachers; additionally the survey was given to eight people who did not / do not study the English language but learned English at school, went to various places, where English is spoken or at least live in our Americanized world with its various adaptations from the English language. The survey which they had to do and which can be found in the appendix deals with English punctuation but nevertheless was introduced in German, which was chosen in order to avoid problems in understanding the different tasks, which could have distorted the results of the survey. The sentences used in the survey were mostly taken out of books, describing problems of punctuating, so that one can be sure not to make the kind of mistakes one was planning to test others on. In addition to the comparison of the results of the survey from students / non-students of English, also native speakers were asked to complete the survey; the aim of this was to compare the results of second language learners with those of native-speakers and to see, who of these were able to gain a better result. Before the survey and its data are analyzed, the use of punctuation and punctuation marks in general will be considered, but firstly the question what punctuation is and what kind of use it has shall be elaborated upon.

After defining the expression ¿survey¿ the uses and goals of survey are described. It will be explained how a questionnaire is constructed, in what form it has to be written down and which mistakes are often made and have to be avoided. In this context I will state different opinions of researchers and explain the dispute between two ways of conducting surveys, known as the qualitative and the quantitative researchers and will ponder which of these two contents should be preferred. Afterwards it will be defined how the data is collected before I explain how to analyse the collected data and expose the various different methods to make statements about the data. Here the most common computations are defined and exemplified with the help of some graphics. Afterwards these computations are all exemplified with the help of a sample-survey, which was prepared during the course at university. At last the most important ideas which I wanted to demonstrate through this term paper will be repeated very shortly as part of the conclusion.

Hierbei sollen zunächst die politischen Verhältnisse der damaligen Zeit beleuchtet werden, also kurz beschrieben werden, wie es um die Machtfülle der für den weiteren Verlauf dieser Hausarbeit relevanten Gruppen beschaffen war. Hierbei gilt es zu beachten, dass der Weg der Vandalen nach Afrika nur wenig bis keine Beachtung finden wird, da dieser für das gewählte Thema von geringerem Interesse ist und den Rahmen dieser schriftlichen Ausarbeitung sprengen würde. Im Anschluss an die Schilderung der Verhältnisse wird aufgezeigt, welche Umstände die Gründe der Plünderung der ¿heiligen Stadt¿ durch Geiserichs Truppen waren. Wie sich diese Plünderung genau zutrug, wobei ein Schwerpunkt ist, welche Beute hierbei erzielt worden ist und wie im Nachhinein mit dieser Beute, die nicht nur aus materiellen Gütern, sondern auch aus Menschen bestand, umgegangen worden ist, soll abschließend beleuchtet werden. Es folgt ein Ausblick auf die nachfolgenden Beziehungen zwischen dem Vandalenreich und dem (west-)römischen Reich, die mit der Plünderung Roms respektive der hieraus erzielten Beute eng verflochten sind.Um die Geschehnisse der damaligen Zeit zu beschreiben, werden Quellen sowie Sekundärliteratur zu Rate gezogen werden. Hierbei werden Darstellungen von Castritius, Berndt, von Rummel, Steinmacher, Henning, Ward-Perkins und Heuss benutzt, ebenso wie solche von Gautier, Martin, Fischer, Sanford, Schmidt, Barnish und Hattler. In Venice the indication of surnames began in this time period, France (10th/11th century) and the German-speaking area (12th century) followed this example (Kohlheim 1996: 1280), so the common practice of naming changed and thenceforth people were called by both, forename and surname. This giving of names led to the science of onomastics ¿ representing a separate discipline (Wittkowski 1995: 289) -, whose purpose basically is "die Geschichte und den Gebrauch eines Namens zu klären und mögliche Schlüsse daraus zu ziehen" (Hansack 2004: 51), as the character of naming had caused people to think about the meaning of personal names for centuries (Eichler 1995: 2). Such name-interpreting can also take the role of a poetic device and by this means as literary onomastic (Hansack 2004: 51) function as a link between linguistic and literary studies bearing on "the study of the way names function in fiction" (Ashley 1989: 198). The following term paper will take up this and consequently concentrate on the names of the characters in the TV series LOST. This idea came up after reading an article by Matthew Gilbert, who quoted Damon Lindelof - one of the makers of LOST - mentioning that not one name of the island¿s inhabitants was chosen incidentally but that every single name had a special meaning concerning the storyline (Gilbert 2005). Lindelof and co-producer J. J. Abrahams used "names that gesture outward from the series" in a way that "name[s] assists [the] definition of character[s], suggesting clues of [¿] personality" and are an "entrance to that what [they] represent[s]; direction; past, current or future position" (Rowden 2000: 115) and therefore played "the name game quite shrewdly" (Gilbert 2005).

Die Behandlung des ersten Kreuzzugs soll nach Absprache mit Herrn Prof. Dr. Vones hierbei den Schwerpunkt dieser Examensarbeit ausmachen, was die unterschiedliche Gewichtung der verschiedenen Kapitel erklärt. Zunächst wird erläutert, wie es überhaupt zu dem Phänomen der Kreuzzüge und Volkskreuzzüge kam und was genau solche ausmachte. Gründe für die Bevölkerung an diesen teilzunehmen, sollen ebenso angeführt werden wie solche, es nicht zu wagen. Die Verfolgungen und Tötungen von Juden, über die diese Arbeit in erster Linie berichten soll, werden im Kontext der ersten beiden Kreuzzüge hauptsächlich auf das Rheinland bezogen dargestellt. Bei der Analyse des dritten Kreuzzugs werden die Verfolgungen der Juden in England im Mittelpunkt stehen, wobei das Pogrom in York das gewichtigste darstellt. Zudem soll die Frage beantwortet werden, welche Rolle die Bischöfe bei den Verfolgungen und Pogromen inne hatten ¿ akzeptierten sie diese und unterstützten sie sogar, oder versuchten sie, Ermordungen und Plünderungen zu verhindern? Wie die weltlichen Herrscher und Machthaber mit dieser Frage umgingen, soll ebenfalls geklärt werden.2Um hierauf näher einzugehen, wird zunächst die rechtliche Situation der Juden in den entsprechenden Gebieten aufgezeigt, ebenso wie die Lebenssituation der Juden in den Städten. Hierdurch soll der rechtliche Rahmen, in dem die im Anschluss geschilderten Verfolgungen und Morde stattfanden, veranschaulicht werden, so dass die Hintergründe der Pogrome in ihrem historischen Kontext richtig eingeordnet werden können. Um Vergleiche aus dem Verhalten mehrerer Bischöfe ziehen zu können, sollen anschließend die Geschehnisse, die im Jahr 1096 in Köln, Worms, Mainz, Trier und Speyer stattfanden, genauer analysiert werden. Dabei werden sowohl christliche, syrische, armenische und arabische als auch hebräische Quellen herangezogen, um eine möglichst objektive, kulturspezifisch unverfälschte Sichtweise zu bieten. Welche Quellen jeweils für die Bearbeitung des Themas gewählt wurden, wird in einem zusätzlichen Kapitel vor der Schilderung der Entstehung des Kreuzzugsgedankens beschrieben, da dies ausschlaggebend für die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit ist.
