Das Buch erzählt von den frühen Reisen eines jungen Mannes, der vor der Wende im Osten Deutschlands von großen Abenteuern und Forschungsreisen träumte. Seine Gebirgsüberquerungen und Flusswanderungen im östlichen Balkan, die wie Expeditionen angelegt waren, endeten jedoch oft abrupt an einer unüberwindbaren Grenze. Dennoch erzählt Steve als Siebzigjähriger einem jüngeren Publikum, das selbst schon die halbe Welt bereist hat, von diesen Unternehmungen, die ihm heute durchaus als unvergessliche Abenteuer erscheinen. Es dauerte allerdings noch zehn Jahre bis zur Wende und zu seinen ersten richtigen Forschungsreisen als Ornithologe in den Russischen Altai und ins Chamar-Daban-Gebirge am Baikalsee. Das Buch ist somit ein Bindeglied zwischen seiner ornithologischen Tätigkeit und der Suche nach sich selbst beim Schreiben.
