Karma-Yoga ist ein System aus Religion und Ethik, das dahin führt, Freiheit durch Selbstlosigkeit und gute Taten zu erlangen. Der Karma-Yogi braucht an keine Doktrin zu glauben. Er braucht noch nicht einmal an Gott zu glauben. Er braucht nicht zu wissen, was seine Seele ist oder über irgendwelche metaphysischen Spekulationen nachzudenken. Er hat sein eigenes, besonderes Ziel: die Realisierung der Selbstlosigkeit. Er wird sie für sich selbst ausarbeiten; jeder Moment seines Lebens wird eine Verwirklichung der Selbstlosigkeit sein, denn er hat sie durch reine Arbeit zu erlangen, ohne die Hilfe von Lehrsätzen oder Theorien. Er löst auf diese Weise jenes Problem, das der Jnani-Yogi durch Vernunft und Inspiration und der Bhakta-Yogi durch seine Liebe löst.

Swami Vivekananda war einer der bedeutendsten Yogis des 19. Jahrhunderts und der bekannteste Schüler von Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Er brachte als erster Yoga in den Westen und verbreitete die Lehre verschiedener spiritueller Wege.
