This little work embodies the substance of a lecture delivered to the Society for the Higher Training of Youths, and forms a mere attempt towards the exposition of Islamic Ethics in the English language,-a task not unattended with difficulty owing to the extended range of selection. At the instance, however, of friends interested in the education of Mahommedan youths and in the diffusion of correct notions of Islamic morality among outsiders, I am induced to place this brochure in the hands of the public, in the hope that it may, perhaps, help towards bridging the gulf which still in the nineteenth century divides the Mahommedans, not only from the Hindoos, but also from the Christians-followers of a cognate creed.

It is difficult, if not impossible, for any one not endowed with a spirit of sympathy, or the faculty of transporting the mind to the social conditions and moral needs of other times, to do justice to the Teacher of another Faith, especially if that Faith is imagined to be in rivalry with his own. Generally speaking, the attitude of Christian writers towards Mohammed and his religion is akin to that of the critical Jew towards the Teacher of Nazareth, or of the philosophical Celsus towards Christianity, In the brochure which the liberalism and enterprise of the publishers enables me to place before the public, I have endeavored to outline from inside the essential teachings of Islam and the prominent features of its History.

A respected jurist himself, and a descendant of Mohammad, Ali's words were extremely influential. He achieved honors in school, began a legal practice in Calcutta, and was one of the most accomplished Muslims of his time before he moved to London at age 20. When he returned to Calcutta in 1873, he continued his law practice, became a law professor at Calcutta University, and founded the Central National Mohammedan Association in 1877, a political organization central to promoting modern Muslim thought. Ali moved back to London in 1904, establishing the London Muslim League in 1908 and the first London mosque in 1910. Ali continued to write and make breakthroughs for Muslims until his death in 1928.
