Repentance is not optional. It is not left to our choice whether or not we will repent, but it is an indispensable command. God has enacted a law in the High Court of heaven that no sinner will be saved except the repenting sinner, and he will not break his own law. No one can willfully continue in sin and expect to be covered by the blood of Christ. Even if all the angels stood before God and begged for the life of an unrepenting person, God would not grant it. The Lord God, compassionate and merciful, . . . who keeps faithfulness for thousands, . . . will by no means leave the guilty unpunished (Exodus 34:6-7). Though God is more full of mercy than the sun is of light, still He will not forgive a sinner who willfully continues to sin.We have, by sin, wronged God. We have eclipsed his honor. We have infringed upon his law, and we should, reasonably, repent of our old ways. By repentance, we humble and judge ourselves for sin. We agree that God would be righteous if he destroyed us, and so we give glory to God and do what we can to repair his honor.Dying to sin is the life of repentance. The very day a Christian turns from sin, he must require of himself a perpetual fast. The eye must fast from impure glances. The ear must fast from listening to slander. The tongue must fast from cursing. The hands must fast from bribes. The feet must fast from unclean paths. And the soul must fast from the love of wickedness. This turning away from sin implies a noticeable change in the lives of those who truly follow Christ. Therefore let us, while we are on this side of the grave, make our peace with God!

It's amazing to think that an entire book could be written on one verse in the Bible, but Thomas Watson managed to do just that. This early Puritan book, so logical, simple, and full of truth, has stood the test of time so well that that it is still treasured today. In the words of Watson, "If the whole Scripture be the feast of the soul, then Romans 8 may be a dish at that feast, and with its sweet variety may very much refresh and animate the hearts of Gods people."In his grand exposition, Watson masterfully encourages through the words of one of the most memorized and quoted verses in Scripture, Romans 8:28: "We know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."Watson, who lived from 1620 to 1686, was an English, Non-Conformist, Puritan preacher and author who penned "All Things for Good" around 1660. Many have found this work, written more than 350 years ago, to be still relevant and refreshing today. Though the old English requires some thought, Watson's work is magnificent in its depth and simplicity. In nine chapters, he expertly "fleshes out" why all things-whether the best or the worst-work together for good to the godly. Though there are many books that try to explain "why bad things happen to good people," Watsons is the original and-in the eyes of many-the best. Readers who are facing the "trials of life" will find this powerful and enlightening book to be especially encouraging.Through Romans 8:28, Watson reassures readers that:God is always in control, and thatNo matter the circumstances, God uses everything that happens in our lives to help us to grow spiritually and become more like Jesus. A thorough and logical treatment of Romans 8:28, this classic, which is backed by Scripture after Scripture is a rare gem that will benefit many if read, not just once, but multiple times.

The contented heart is never out of heart. Contentment is a golden shield that beats back discouragement. True contentment will trust God even when it cannot see Him. Why are you discontented? Is it because you are temporarily dispossessed of comforts? You who are discontented because you do not have all you would like to have, let me tell you, either your faith is a nonentity, or, at best, it is just an embryo. It is a weak faith that must have stilts and crutches to support it. Discontent is not only below faith, but it is also below reason. Discontent is unworthy of the relationship we have with God. Christians are invested with the title and privilege of sonship; we are heirs of the promise. God will be sure to reward the contented Christian.List of ChaptersCh. 1: The ScholarCh. 2: The LessonCh. 3: The Character of ContentmentCh. 4: Why Should We Be Content?Ch. 5: The Usefulness of ContentmentCh. 6: How Is It Possible to Be Content?Ch. 7: Motivations to ContentmentCh. 8: DiscontentCh. 9: More MotivationCh. 10: CautionsCh. 11: Characteristics of ContentmentCh. 12: Rules for ContentmentCh. 13: The Contented Christian's Comfort

2020 Reprint of the 1668 Edition. 'The Doctrine of Repentance is probably one of the most needed books, not only for us as ministers, but for our people, because repentance is so trivialized today. [This book] stresses the need for ongoing repentance, a daily repentance, a lifestyle of repentance. Like Luther said, "God will have his people repenting all life long." Watson shows you how to do that.' - JOEL BEEKEOriginally written in 1668, Watson's book explains what repentance is and underscores its significance in Christianity. Watson also provides on explanation of what Scripture has to say about this theme. In all, this is one of the better guides on the subject, a subject that is often neglected in more modern exegesis.

To Thomas Watson, the Lord's Supper was a visible sermon, a mirror in which to gaze on the sufferings and death of Christ. 'God, to help our faith, does not only give us an audible Word, but a visible sign.' But more than this, the Supper was a time in which to partake of the benefits of Christ's death by faith, to be fed and cherished by the Lord in his own banqueting house, and to obtain a foretaste of the glory which will be fully realized only in heaven. Watson's aim was to stimulate greater love to Christ in His people, and to enhance their appreciation of the Supper as a spiritual feast for all believers. His fine exposition shows the rich provision made in the Supper for all who love the Lord, while it also lays bare the emptiness of all mere sacramentalism.
