So who's Yoelin Thibbony? That's what she calls herself now. She endured a cruel and abusive childhood, when there was no one to rescue her. By day Oliva Sudden is a substitute high school teacher struggling with unruly students and administrations that do not care for her methods or her race. At night she haunts the neighborhood, fighting those whose activities harm the 'hood's innocents-people who just want to live and grow. To do this, she has been gifted with special skills that make her invulnerable. Jordan Farrell, a white detective, has been selected to stay in an apartment in the 'hood to represent "police presence." None too happy about this, he nevertheless finds himself involved with the people who live there, and tries to help when he can, often going beyond the call of duty. His partner, Detective Jamaryelle Moore, supports him. Their caseload includes investigations of recent unsolved killings in the 'hood. Unknown to them, the killings are being carried out by Oliva Sudden-who lives next door to Farrell.

Mars sends his avatars to wrest the magic talisman from Peridot.  To lure her into a trap, those avatars include two men she''s interested in.  Worse, they threaten her friends St├⌐phanie and Nathalie.  Peridot, whose human name is Ricia Ryder, takes them to the springs in northern France, where Sequana, the Celtic goddess who empowers Peridot, has a long-dormant shrine.  Peridot activates the shrine, and people come from nearby hamlets to seek cures for their infirmities.Mars, however, is focused on the talisman.  He abducts Ricia and takes her to Mount Olympus, where there is a confrontation with Zeus regarding proprieties in battles between gods. St├⌐phanie, meanwhile, learns a secret about Ricia that threatens to tear apart the friendship among the three women.  Peridot, who seeks to do some good in the world, may not be able to do this for much longer-not if St├⌐phanie, a journalist, has also become an avatar of Mars.
