Today's international trade is radically more complex. The revolution in information and communication technologies fostered an internationalisation of supply chains which created a nexus between trade, investment, and services which is at the heart of so much of today's international commerce. The degree of recent change has created an uncertainty that now demands new global trade systems - a new set of rules for the new environment. Cities and regions represent the driving force of development in economic, social, and cultural life and reflect the spatial organization of human society. Furthermore, strategic urban regions are becoming increasingly important players in the global economy, as the impact of national states decreases while the impact of cities and urban regions is increasing. The process of globalization is reflected in the tendency for gaining competitiveness and efficiencies of global trends. Once cities and regions have identified where they are, they need to decide where they want to be in the future. And to do this, they need to understand the significant trends that will influence the direction in which the future unfolds. Managing the identified capitals (four of them are subject of the sections in this book) effectively means taking a holistic approach, since each of the capitals depends on the others. The necessity of taking a holistic approach is one of the themes to emerge particularly strongly from the knowledge-based economy.

With a more holistic view of the interrelationships between individuals, markets and the larger economy, leaders can make more informed decisions. Understanding past trends in light of today's particular challenges, a wider knowledge of economics also allows business leaders to create more persuasive arguments when attempting to affect positive change within an organization. Since the turn of the century, emerging markets have dramatically increased their role on the world stage, the digital revolution has strengthened, social networks have become a decisive force also in business and the voice of the people has reinvented markets and overturned governments, a sharing economy has been born, scientific advances have changed our lives and so on. All these issues and processes pose a huge challenge for leaders, and some are tackled in this book.
