These Proceedings have been assembled from papers presented at the Conference on Models of Biological Growth and Spread, held at the German Cancer Research Centre Heidelberg and at the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the University of Heidelberg, July 16-21, 1979. The main theme of the conference was the mathematical representation of biolog- ical populations with an underlying spatial structure. An important feature of such populations is that they and/or their individual com- ponents may interact with each other. Such interactions may be due to external disturbances, internal regulatory factors or a combination of both. Many biological phenomena and processes including embryogenesis, cell growth, chemotaxis, cell adhesion, carcinogenesis, and the spread of an epidemic or of an advantageous gene can be studied in this con- text. Thus, problems of particular importance in medicine (human and veterinary), agriculture, ecology, etc. may be taken into consideration and a deeper insight gained by utilizing (more) realistic mathematical models. Since the intrinsic biological mechanisms may differ considerably from each other, a great variety of mathematical approaches, theories and techniques is required. The aims of the conference were (i) To provide an overview of the most important biological aspects. (ii) To survey and analyse possible stochastic and deterministic approaches. (iii) To encourage new research by bringing together mathematicians interested in problems of a biological nature and scientists actively engaged in developing mathematical models in biology.

This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the work- shop "e;Modelling of Patterns in Space and Time"e;, organized by the 80nderforschungsbereich 123, "e;8tochastische Mathematische Modelle"e;, in Heidelberg, July 4-8, 1983. The main aim of this workshop was to bring together physicists, chemists, biologists and mathematicians for an exchange of ideas and results in modelling patterns. Since the mathe- matical problems arising depend only partially on the particular field of applications the interdisciplinary cooperation proved very useful. The workshop mainly treated phenomena showing spatial structures. The special areas covered were morphogenesis, growth in cell cultures, competition systems, structured populations, chemotaxis, chemical precipitation, space-time oscillations in chemical reactors, patterns in flames and fluids and mathematical methods. The discussions between experimentalists and theoreticians were especially interesting and effective. The editors hope that these proceedings reflect at least partially the atmosphere of this workshop. For the convenience of the reader, the papers are ordered alpha- betically according to authors. However, the table of contents can easily be grouped into the main topics of the workshop. For practical reasons it was not possible to reproduce in colour the beautiful pictures of patterns shown at the workshop. Since a larger number of half-tone pictures could be included in this volume, the loss of information has, however, been kept to a minimum. The workshop has already stimulated cooperation between its parti- cipants and this volume is intended to spread this effect.

Dramatische soziale Ereignisse wie das Ende der sozialistischen Staaten oder die Demontage des Wohlfahrtssystems decken grundlegende theoretische Defizite der gegenwärtigen Soziologie des Wandels auf. Diesseits der besonders in der amerikanischen Debatte erhobenen Forderung nach einem konzeptionellen Neubeginn werden in dieser Studie aktuelle soziologische Gesellschaftstheorien daraufhin untersucht, was sie zum Abbau der Mängel soziologischer Analyse des Wandels beitragen können. Der Beutezug bei zeitgenössischen Titanen der Soziologie (Bourdieu, Giddens, Coleman, Münch, Habermas) steht unter der Leitfrage: Was leisten gegenwärtige soziologische Theorien aus der Theorieperspektive des sozialen Wandels? Im Ergebnis lassen sich diese Theorien mit erheblichem konzeptionellen Gewinn auch als Theorien des sozialen Wandels lesen.

Die systematisch angelegte, detaillierte Aufarbeitung der Gesellschaftstheorie stützt sich auf alle soziologisch relevanten Schriften und Beiträge von Habermas seit 1954 bis in die Gegenwart. Im Zuge der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung schälen sich Tendenzen einer gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung heraus, die - so die These - auf eine Entkoppelung der Entkoppelung von System und Lebenswelt, also auf eine zunehmende, über eine vitale Öffentlichkeit vermittelte Integration von materieller und symbolischer Reproduktion hindeuten. Die Nutzung sozialrevolutionären Lernpotentials versetzt die Gesellschaft in die Lage, Krisen und Konflikte als Herausforderung zu begreifen. Damit bewegt sich die Gegenwartsgesellschaft auf eine "Postmoderne" zu, welche die Fehler der Moderne aufarbeitet - ohne vor neuen Fehlern gefeit zu sein und in dem Bewusstsein, dass Irrtümer zu evolutionären Umwegen zwingen. Diese wiederum bedürfen dann der Aufarbeitung durch die "Postmoderne" selbst. Anstelle einer komprimierten, aber nicht kapitelweise zu lesenden und zu bearbeitenden Fassung sind die einzelnen Hauptabschnitte in sich geschlossen und verständlich formuliert. Dieses Vorgehen erleichtert den Zugang zur Soziologie von Jürgen Habermas.
