Exploring the History of New Zealand Astronomy

Australia has a proud history of achievements in radio astronomy, and through the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics (and later the Australia Telescope National Facility) has been a world leader in radio astronomy since the end of World War II. This book covers the years from 1945 until 1961, when radio astronomy developed at a number of sites in New South Wales. Many amazing new discoveries were made by an outstanding group of young scientists, opening up the new science of radio astronomy "from the solar system to the cosmos."

This book marks the centennial of Tebbutt's death with a major biographical account surveying his scientific contributions to astronomy, prefaced with a foreword by Sir Patrick Moore.

At a time when the sciences were not yet as well established in the United States as they were in Europe, this public interest and support provided the growing scientific community in the United States with the platform they needed to advance the field of astronomy in the United States.

In late 2003 I spent two fruitful and enjoyable months in the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington (UW) working on archival material accumulated over the decades by Woody, for a book we will co-author with Jessica Chapman on the early development of Australian astronomy.
