Diese Leute handelten bei den größten Geistern der Nation, welche dem Volke zu hoch waren, Gedanken und Wendungen ein, machten sie nach ihrem Geschmack zurecht und gaben sie wiederum ihren Leuten preis, die solche mit Jubel und Herzenslust verschlangen. Diese Volksmänner sind die Zwischenhändler geworden und sind anzusehen wie die Unternehmer von Gassenwirtshäusern und Winkelschenken. Sie nehmen ihren Wein von den großen Handlungen, wo er ihnen echt und lauter gegeben wird; sie mischen ihn, weil er dem Volke anders nicht munden will, mit einigem gebrannten Wasser und Zucker, färben ihn mit roten Beeren, daß er lieblich anzuschauen ist, und verzapfen ihn ihren Kunden unter irgend einem bedeutungsvollen Namen.

In dem Cabriolet des Eilwagens, der zweimal in der Woche von Frankfurt nach Stuttgart geht, reisten vor einigen Jahren an einem der schönsten Tage des Septembers zwei junge Männer. Was er sprach, war, wenn nicht gerade heiter, doch offen und verständig; nicht selten sogar überraschten den Reisenden leicht hingeworfene Äußerungen, Gedanken seines Nachbars, die von feiner Bildung, gesellschaftlicher Erfahrung und einer Belesenheit zeugten, die er denn doch hinter dem etwas groben Jagdrock und der unscheinbaren Ledermütze nicht gesucht hätte. Überhaupt deuchte es diesem Reisenden, er müsse, je weiter er im Süden vordrang, desto öfter und nicht ohne Beschämung dem Lande und den Bewohnern Vorurteile abbitten, die man in der Ferne, vom Hörensagen, besonders in einem Alter von vierundzwanzig Jahren, so leicht annimmt.

Vor vielen Jahren, als im Spessart die Wege noch schlecht und nicht so häufig als jetzt befahren waren, zogen zwei junge Burschen durch diesen Wald. Der eine mochte achtzehn Jahre alt sein und war ein Zirkelschmied, der andere, ein Goldarbeiter, konnte nach seinem Aussehen kaum sechzehn Jahre haben und tat wohl jetzt eben seine erste Reise in die Welt. Der Abend war schon heraufgekommen, und die Schatten der riesengroßen Fichten und Buchen verfinsterten den schmalen Weg, auf dem die beiden wanderten. Der Zirkelschmied schritt wacker vorwärts und pfiff ein Lied, schwatzte auch zuweilen mit Munter, seinem Hund, und schien sich nicht viel darum zu kümmern, daß die Nacht nicht mehr fern, desto ferner aber die nächste Herberge sei; aber Felix, der Goldarbeiter, sah sich oft ängstlich um. Wenn der Wind durch die Bäume rauschte, so war es ihm, als höre er Tritte hinter sich; wenn das Gesträuch am Wege hin und her wankte und sich teilte, glaubte er Gesichter hinter den Büschen lauern zu sehen.
