Heather Elvis was a native of Horry County and she was a graduate of St. James High School in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. After her graduation in the year 2011, Heather moved into an apartment in Carolina Forest. She shared this apartment with her best friend and coworker, Brianna Warrelmann. Heather was making a living by waitressing at the Tilter Kilt in Myrtle Beach and The House of Blue's in North Myrtle Beach. During her time as a waitress, she was pursuing her studies in cosmetology. According to Heather's father, her cosmetology license "was her way of giving back, and making others feel good about themselves". Heather was leading a seemingly ordinary life up until the night of her disappearance on December 17, 2013.

Inspired by Roger Tory Peterson and James Fisher's book Wild America, recent high school graduate M. Ralph Browning embarked on a tightly budgeted, year-long trip in the US looking for birds. The year was 1962. His 1955 VW Beetle broke after nine months, which forced a premature end to the journey. In 2005, after matters of military duty, college, a family, and a career in birds at Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, the author resumed the interrupted trip. This time, he was with the girl he'd left behind in 1962, and they birded Texas, the Southwest, and California. The author chronicles the trip with observations on birds while touching on history, geology, and conservation. The cost of keeping alive includes periodic notes on the price of gasoline (about $0.33/gallon in 1962) and food. The author had earlier written to numerous birders for information about birding particular locations, and many of those individuals across the country showed him birds and invited him into their homes for a gratefully appreciated warm bed and home cooking. The 2005 leg of the journey was assisted by bird finding guides and the help of the legendary Jon Dunn and numerous motels.

When she opened her eyes, she saw a tall figure looming over her, and immediately felt something cold against her throat. She opened her eyes a bit, but the room was too dark for her to make out exactly what was happening. Now awake and on her feet, the man asked Elizabeth to walk to the closet and take out her shoes. Elizabeth quickly complied. Mary Katherine heard her sister ask the man, "Why are you taking me?" Mary Katherine said she heard the man say something to the tune of "for ransom"....

I wrote this book from the time I was two years old up until the present day to tell my life story about the trials that life puts you through, and many of the trials have been very hard and bitter. They left scars in my heart, and at times, I was wondering if God was watching over me. But through it all, I remember what the Christian family that I grew up in has taught me and made me realize all I had to do was to call his name, and he would comfort me in my time of need.I'm hoping this book would be an inspiration for someone going through similar trials!

Geschichte - vielfältig und faszinierend - zumindest ist sie das für mich. Und genau deshalb versuche ich hiermit in kleinen Kapiteln historische Ereignisse und Figuren zu erklären und auch zu zeigen, wie vernetzt und verzweigt alles war und ist - ganz nach dem Motto: In der Kürze liegt die Würze!

Nein, ich nutze dieses Buch, um mich mit mir selbst und meinen Hirngespenstern auseinander zusetzen und zulernen, dass man Erlebnisse und Ängste verarbeiten muss. Wie in einem meiner Kapitel erwähnt, hat jeder Mensch sein Paket zu tragen. Leiden sollte man nicht vergleichen und anstatt jemandes Ängste klein zu reden, sollte man sie ernst nehmen.
