The Odyssey was originally composed in Homeric Greek around the 8th or 7th century BC and, by the mid-6th century BC, had become part of the Greek literary canon. In antiquity, Homer's authorship of the poem was not questioned. Still, contemporary scholarship predominantly assumes that the Iliad and the Odyssey were composed independently and that the stories formed part of a long oral tradition. Given widespread illiteracy, the poem was performed by an aoidos or rhapsode and was more likely to be heard than read.Crucial themes in the poem include the ideas of nostos "return"), wandering, xenia ("guest-friendship"), testing, and omens. Scholars still reflect on the narrative significance of certain groups in the poem, such as women and slaves, who have a more prominent role in the epic than in many other works of ancient literature. This focus is especially remarkable when contrasted with the Iliad, which centers on the exploits of soldiers and kings during the Trojan War.The Odyssey is regarded as one of the most significant works of the Western canon. The first English translation of the Odyssey was in the 16th century. Adaptations and re-imaginings continue to be produced across a wide variety of media. In 2018, when BBC Culture polled experts worldwide to find literature's most enduring narrative, the Odyssey topped the list.

An anthology of True Crime headlined by the story of Lana Sue Clayton... When Lana Sue Clayton's husband, Steven, was found dead July 21, 2018, in the foyer of his expansive South Carolina mansion, authorities initially assumed he'd died during a fall down the stairs. Everyone knew Steven adored his wife - even after she'd "accidentally" shot a crossbow at his head while he was asleep, none of their friends or neighbours suspected that the incident had been intentional. After Steven had survived the bizarre shooting with a fairly minor surface wound, he even managed to convince the local police investigating the incident that it was completely by accident, likely related the chronic sleeping disorder Lana Sue had been diagnosed with. And she'd played the role of grieving wife perfectly after her husband was found dead in the couple's lakefront home. She told investigators that for days before his death, Steven had been complaining about vertigo - dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Lana Sue, a 52 year old nurse who worked at the VA in nearby Charlotte, seemed devastated by the loss of her husband. Little did they know she had systematically killed the man she made vows to...with eye drops..

HE STARTED WITH HIS WIFE...'Michelle was extremely loyal, ' said her close friend, Debbie Knight, 'she was giving, she was caring, she was dedicated. An amazing woman.'Lisa Emmons concurred. 'Michelle was fun so smart and organized, 'It had been a long time since her many friends had seen the successful executive, or even heard from her. In Michelle's case, a long time being more than a couple of days. That was unusual, in fact so strange that these friends began to worry. In the end, tensions rose, and Debbie decided that she had to visit. The increasingly alarmed messages that she had left on Michelle's answer phone had not been answered, and the probability that something bad had happened to her friend could be ignored no longer. Even so, none of these concerned women could have had the slightest idea of the extremes of violence they would discover all done by the hands of the unassuming Charlie Brandt. This story and more are featured in this anthology of True Crime.

When a young economics researcher decides to embrace change and takes a teaching position on a whim, she enters the job with confidence. It doesn't take long until she feels as though she is tumbling downhill, backward and blindfolded, just as one of her students did while skiing, before having to take him to the hospital. After her job morphed into a career, Jean A. Miller Mariner retired with immeasurable lessons to share-for math and for life. Turning from backward and blind to forward and focused, she witnessed the identical pivot for her students over the years and penned these hilarious, complex, and heart-warming tales to demonstrate.Ms. Miller Mariner's story collection is a gift for all the teachers out there, and for the students who drove them to become better educators (even while, like her, they may have been the one steering the bus). Here the good math teacher adds humor to the unthinkable and subtracts nothing, leaving us with one question with absolute value: Who helps whom turn each other's lives around?

Whatever, the peaceful community of Perth knows that the upcoming trial will dominate headlines in the months to come.

Truth stranger than fiction? We've all heard the phrase. Actually, it's a bit of a falsehood. Invention acting as truth. Reality always wins out in the end. Doesn't it? But, in the case of Valerie McDaniel, truth runs even the most bizarre fiction close.Had Valerie survived her darkest days of 2017, she may well now be serving time behind bars. Certainly, prosecutors in Houston, Texas, have little doubt about that. Then again, it is the prosecutors' job to believe in the guilt of those they are employed to accuse. It would be hard, for all but those completely lacking in any moral compass, to attempt to put somebody they believe to be innocent away in prison. Wouldn't it?We shall never know the absolute truth regarding whether or not veterinarian Valerie McDaniel did actually commit a crime, because her trial never took place. Nor shall we know, with certainty, whether there were any mitigating circumstances to be taken into account when judging any wrongdoing she did undertake. We can though, tell her story. We should do so fairly and in a balanced way that allows the reader to make up their own minds in this unusual case. Because Valerie's story is important. She leaves behind a young child, a daughter, who will grow up without her mother. If, one day, that daughter decides to investigate for herself what happened to her mother, it is essential that she can access information untainted by both opinion and interest. This is a tale of two parts. The first, and overwhelmingly longer one, tells of a woman whose life, career and family seemed successful and happy. The second covers just a few weeks, and sees the personality of the protagonist apparently change, making decisions that caused her to throw away that career, that reputation, that loving daughter and, finally, her life itself.Did a once respected veterinarian suddenly decide to become the head of a murder for hire scheme? This is the story of Valerie McDaniel.

After hanging up, he and Clint walked out of a bar called The Ugly Tuna. They made their way down the street, entering a few bars along the way. They would walk into a bar, take a shot or two, and then walk back out to find the next bar. They continued their pub crawl for a while, slowly making their way towards the Arena District. When they got into a bar called The Short North, Clint and Brian ran into Clint's friend, Meredith Reed. It was almost midnight, and the two men asked Reed if she would give them a ride back to The Ugly Tuna. She agreed, and even stated that she would go in with them into the bar for a drink. The three were captured by CCTV riding the escalator to The Ugly Tuna Saloon at 1:15 a.m. on April 1, 2006. There are over a million firefighters in the United States. Over 650,000 of them are volunteers. This book is based on the experiences of one of those volunteers, Lieutenant Dan McCann. Lt. Dan is a 68-year-old retired university professor who has been fighting fires and responding to emergency medical calls in Eastern Washington State for over 27 years. In this book he describes emergencies he and his fellow volunteers have responded to in their ongoing efforts to help members of their rural community survive the worst day of their lives. Dan's stories describe what it's like to be a volunteer firefighter and EMT regularly subjected to the physical and emotional stress of responding to medical and fire emergencies at all hours of the day and night. Each emergency begins with the innocuous vibration of his pager, or the ding of a text message on his phone. But the cryptic messages on his pager or in his texts can be the start of challenging, tragic, and sometimes completely unexpected events that stay forever in the minds of Dan and his fellow firefighters. It's always an exciting ride for Dan and the crew at Station 96 that starts from the moment they send their response text "On My Way!" and ends when they return from the call to park their apparatus in the station truck bay. Sometimes they leave the station for home excited and proud of their accomplishments. Sometimes they leave numb and frustrated by the tragedy they have witnessed and shared.Dan McCann was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. As a child, he often accompanied his dad, a career firefighter, to the local fire stations where he was free to climb on and over all the big smokey red fire trucks. These early experiences were, no doubt, one of the fundamental catalysts that ignited Dan's desire to serve as a volunteer firefighter. By reading this small collection of his stories you'll get a chance to see how that decision, made more than 27 years ago, has shaped the person he is today. Chapter by chapter you can ride along with Dan and the crew from Station 96 as they make their way from their kitchen tables, living room couches, or beds, to the center of other people's lives and emergencies, trying, again and again, to make differences that matter.

In December 1985, a narcotics detective was shot and killed in the driveway of his farm in Pueblo, Colorado, where he lived with his five children and his wife, Donna Yaklich. Initially, authorities suspected Dennis' death was linked to his work in law enforcement, but a tip led them to two teenage shooters - and eventually, back to Dennis' wife, Donna. However, attorneys for Donna Yaklich argued that Dennis had been beating his wife. The murder, they claimed, was a battered woman's desperate attempt to escape a lifetime of abuse - or potentially becoming a murder victim herself, like Dennis' first wife, who is thought to have died of a diet drug overdose in 1977.
