  • von Dani Forrest
    30,00 €

With a startling emotional honesty that pulls no punches, Dani Forrest tells the story of a life shaped largely in avoidance. For many people life happens when they're determinedly making other plans. For Marty May, the plans seem to happen despite her efforts to evade them. After fifty-two years, she finds herself standing in the shower wondering how exactly it was that it all went down, and whose plans she was actually living. Each year of Marty's resolutely unplanned existence is presented via a vignette highlighting some aspect of the outside circumstances that just seem to sweep her along. The ongoing dramas of parents, stepparents, siblings, and half-siblings - and then those of husbands and step kids. Education that provides knowledge but not necessarily wisdom. Rollicking serial monogamy that isn't always monogamous or especially rollicking. Jobs that try to turn into careers but never quite make it. All of them stories that seem to be hers but that she doesn't quite manage to fully occupy. Years become decades, culminating with a heartbreak that forces Marty to make peace with the reality that life indeed just...happens.Meditative and honest, 52 Pick Up: Life in Perfect Disorder is one woman's hard look at a life that seems to have chosen her. It's a story that plainly states the costs of not choosing, yet one that also allows for the possibility that there can be a beautiful rightness to being carried along by circumstance. And that perhaps, in the end, it doesn't really matter.

During World War Two, there was a Commando craze that swept the country. It was during this time period that every segment of society appeared to be receiving Commando "type" training. Individuals from the Boy Scouts to War Workers to members of Law Enforcement were receiving it on some level. This book is an examination of how individuals trained in those methods may have utilized that training for nefarious purposes during the postwar era. What has been looked at in some detail is how "Kill or Be Killed" became "Killing is my Business". What is also discussed is how individuals such as S. R. Linck, who taught these unarmed defense tactics, did their part in making sure that the populace had some knowledge of how to defend themselves if the country ever came under attack by Nazis or the Japanese.

The first ten years of my career in education was as an elementary school teacher. Nevertheless, the focus of my book is on my twenty-three years as an assistant principal.Utilizing true stories and conversations, I attempt to illustrate how poor leadership transformed a once proud school district into Pittsville. There is no possible way that I would have ever attempted to write my story, had not my career taken so many twists and turns. Working for twelve principals, in spans that ranged from two months to seven and a half years, enabled me to develop my own set of strategies, learn what ideas worked, and accumulate enough stories that made me angry, made me laugh, and motivated me to write my story. In closing, bitterness is not a character trait becoming to anyone, yet bitterness is what motivated me to write my story.

  • von Jesus Briones
    17,00 €

In this book, the author Jesus Briones focuses on the fragility of our psychological ecosystem--a fancy way of saying we are constantly changing and never know exactly what we are becoming. His writing is direct and organic, no fillers or artificial flavors, like folk medicine. He stresses the importance of avoiding false values and appreciating life's simple and unadorned truths. Not dark or gloomy, his message is timely and optimistic, but with provisos. While the world may measure the value of a man by the number of zeroes in his bank account, Mr Briones offers another take on what makes people worth knowing and staying connected to throughout the inevitably unpredictable course of life. His worldview has been shaped by a life spent among all types of people. He was born in 1940 and grew up in rural Mexico. Orphaned at a young age, he worked at a variety of jobs in Mexico and then Arizona, where he is now a builder/contractor. In the process, he came to refine what it means to be a "winner." Success has taught him that winning is not about who has the most points or the most money. For him, life is about accumulating experiences that forge your character and make you the person you were meant to be, something that is often apparent from a young age, as it was in his case.Mr Briones was born on Christmas more than eight decades ago, and he continues to go to work every day and build character, along with fine homes.

I felt empathy right away.Los Gatos Locos restaurant and bar is in Ojochal, Costa Rica, and is a tree house in the jungle. We go there to visit our son who owns the place. Adelia was in Costa Rica, scouting out a place to live, but had been visiting over several years. She was going to make the jump from Washington state for personal reasons. These vignettes give a flavor of what it's like to leave the US in your seventh decade, with what you can take on the airplane, and ship the rest in a container. Of course, you might be just sixty or even fifty, with a taste for adventure. The jungle will lower your blood pressure, and expat society is far better than looking at the UPS man on a bell cam.Behind the vignettes, the brightly colored houses, the friendly natives, and the ecological consciousness, there is the reality of the jungle. There are jaguars that follow the banks of a river, flocks of rainbow-colored parrots, bands of monkeys, snakes, caymans, and termites.I'll let you make up your own mind about eating termites.
