  • von Józef Sobolewski
    115,00 €

A Promise Too Big is a captivating memoir that speaks to the indomitable human spirit of never giving up. It is an inspiring story of how a young man, against all odds, found ways to overcome overwhelming adversities to fulfil a precious promise. At 13 years old in 2010, Josues settled in a council estate in a small town in County Kildare with no English. He moved to Ireland with his brother, Chris (15 years old at the time) to join their family. He made a promise to his mother and grandmother that he will one day hold a university degree at all cost, as he left them at the airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2015, he discovered he had been abandoned, made homeless and left to fend for himself with just ¿65 to his name. Chris became homeless in 2014 when he was kicked out of their home. The brothers told themselves that they couldn't afford to fail. They picked themselves up and relied on those around them including strangers for support in their pursuit of higher education. In his pursuit of his third level education, he found refuge among drug and alcohol addicts in Dublin's inner city, impoverished areas of Dublin. He found place of solace among those rejected by society. In order to stay financially afloat, he desperately searched for job opportunities. The turning point in his life occurred when he was contacted by McDonald's for an interview, marking the beginning of a new chapter. However, with the sudden loss of his university grant, he had to rely on the income from his job at McDonald's to sustain himself as well as finance the last two years of his university education by himself. Despite the demands of pursuing full-time studies, he balanced a full-time job alongside his academic commitments. In 2019, Josues graduated with a first-class honours in Microbiology from University College Dublin. In 2019, straight after graduation, he joined PwC Ireland, the largest professional services firm in the country, as a graduate associate in their tax department. In 2022, he qualified as a chartered tax adviser (CTA) with the Irish Tax Institute. CTA is the leading tax advisory qualification in Ireland for tax professionals. In 2023, he joined Apple, one of the largest company in the world by market cap, as an indirect tax analyst. The story is an ode to the power of hope and perseverance, and how the smallest opportunities can change one's life. It is a story of unwavering determination and resilience where one's aspirations are pursued through countless sacrifices and unyielding hard work, but begs the question: at what cost? This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster and leave you inspired.

The writings in my life's journey are an examination of events with some of the people, places, and experiences I remembered, fitting them together and appreciating how they influenced who I was. So much time, choices--good and bad--mistakes, failures, and achievements.I had difficulty concentrating and retaining data in school, until I started taking private music lessons my first year in high school. I was learning to study and memorize music, which started to carry over into my high school classes. My life through graduation was disjointed, but I was making progress and retaining minimal data to enter engineering studies. I struggled through college and upon graduation with my BSEE, was on to a fifty-year professional career. My career gave me freedom of choice in engineering and marketing, both domestic and international. As you follow my path, you will see that I essentially learned to make choices based on data and conditions, void of impulse. Many times, I had no choice, confronted with unanticipated events. But even then, I would stop, analyze, and attempt some acceptable outcome. My decision to study engineering and complete my degree lacked any preparation or plan. I was strapped with financial burdens and changing work conditions, which I did not manage well. On top of this, I needed to live and grow personally with a philosophy for life, continued music studies, art and culture, and social development. Plus there was the added pressures of the selective service to be considered. If you have the opportunity, before you start a life's goal, make a plan with reasonable milestones, allowing for unforeseen events. If it takes years, allow for your being a human being, and if you require a companion, find one who will share your life in a loose relationship with love and respect, where you both understand it is not forever. No controls. Conflicts are not what you require in life.If you are lucky and have a memory where you remember almost everything, enjoy it!

The wedding took place in a bombed-out church. Where did her wedding gown and cake come from? Best not to ask. With the end of the war, they leave Britain--and all Joy ever knew--behind. Traveling first by troop ship, then by train, the couple arrives in Salem, Oregon with $10 to their name and a two-year-old son to begin their life in America.

Gold of Their Bodies, first published in 1955, is a fascinating biography of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), the French post-impressionist artist, most famous for his colorful paintings of life in Tahiti and the South Pacific. Although fictionalized by the addition of dialogue, Gold of Their Bodies draws from Gauguin's own writings and accurately portrays the adult life of Gauguin - his struggles to make a living from his art, his friendships with Van Gogh, Cezanne, Pissaro, and other contemporaries, his travels and life with the native peoples of the South Pacific, his relationships with Polynesian women, and his run-ins with French colonial authorities. Gauguin, prolific in his output (in large part due to the small price he received for his works), and troubled by poor health in his later life, died at the relatively young age of 54 in the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia. It was not until after his death that his works were recognized as masterpieces, and, in February 2015, one of his Tahitian paintings sold for the staggering price of $300 million dollars.
