Twelve Great Scots and their Roots brings together People - the Great Scots, Place - where they were shaped and flourished, and Fame - their legacy. None of the Great Scots was born great. There is no Robert the Bruce here, no Mary, Queen of Scots. (Although Robert III and James I get a mention). There are four knights in the list, but they all came from modest beginnings and made their way up the greasy pole by native genius and hard work. Two of the Great Scots are still alive, and it is particularly satisfying that Dr Jim Swire and Lockerbie are given close attention. The Great Scots selected may be celebrated in their own fields and internationally, but some may be new to some. All are interesting in their own way, but one or two pose a puzzle. Who turned geology upside-down? What has number 38 in the Periodic Table of Elements to do with a little Highland village? What is a thrum? What do a great Canadian city and an obscure hamlet in Mull have in common? Familiar or not we have twelve interesting places with twelve interesting - and sometimes unlikely - stories behind them. A feature of the book is its emphasis on first-hand observation and thinking for oneself - based on evidence. Consequently, each chapter has a trail, so that the reader can check the veracity of the author's stories and even be inspired to cover the ground.

In the depths of industrial West Yorkshire during the transformative era of the 1960s and 1970s, Red Bricks and Loose Dogs takes readers on a profound journey of introspection. Inspired by the unwavering honesty of Father Jim, a trusted and wise man, the story unravels the truth behind the boy who grew into a man. Father Jim, revered for his wisdom, kept a powerful revelation hidden until his final moments. He shattered the illusion of his authority to grant heavenly visas or offer absolution, asserting that it is our personal responsibility to face the truth and examine our own past behaviours. Guided by Father Jim's honesty, the author of this remarkable memoir transports readers to the vibrant tapestry of his youth, set against the gritty industrial landscapes of West Yorkshire. Within this backdrop, the author rediscovers the influential people and defining moments that shaped his thinking and character for years to come.

Imagine seeing the beauty of an outback sunrise or sunset, native desert animals doing what they do: scaring the hell out of you! While you are reading the yarns I have lived. The desert and the traditional Aboriginal people who live there won my respect and heart. The native animals were delightful to observe in their natural habitat. My favourites are the wedge tail eagles, who fly majestically in the sky, and the emus. The emu has it down pat! The female lays the eggs, and the male takes over from there with the incubating and raising the chicks. Have fun reading my yarns.

The stories in this book are about a man who was born on an unknown date in the wilderness of a countryside in the continent of Africa. When he was a boy, he struggled to come and live in his country's capital city. After seeing some children of his age going to school, he strived to find education for himself with minimal help from some relatives. After a long adventurous life with awkward, complicated education and rough work experiences, followed by a disheartening civil war exposure in his country, he ended up working with a British school in England. Then, he started to educate a rainbow of multicultural children from all over the world, to build their future in Britain. He also helped the school to interpret four foreign languages and his own mother's language. He then assisted the school to build a bridge between the culture gap of the communities and the school. These adventurous stories are interesting and are real inspiration to anyone who would like to know how disadvantaged people can be successful and helpful to others. The stories in this book are powerful and moving memoirs. They show some incredibly emotive experiences. They reveal how the writer has tackled some difficult incidents that are all true. He tells the stories in an honest way. The stories are emotional, and unforgettable. They show how the writer dealt with a span of cultures despite being an outsider. So, dive in and find out how all these adventurous stories happened. One thing is for sure, you will enjoy reading them to the end.

For nearly 100 years, from after the Civil War to the 1960s when two federal judges took charge, Arkansas prisons were torture chambers. Brutal prisoners doing time for murder and other extraordinarily violent crimes regularly held positions of authority. Their supervisors included convict trustees and sadistic prison authorities. They starved and beat men and women prisoners, sometimes to death, and often for amusement. Politicians and their cronies did nothing because corruption and graft benefited them. This book graphically describes the horror and those who endured it. It pulls together previously published firsthand accounts from two prisoners, an Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division Report, and two major legal opinions related to complaints of unconstitutionality in Arkansas prisons.

One day, amidst my growing complaints to my mother about my father's lifestyle, he found it necessary to have a heart-to-heart with me. While planting a tree in our garden, he shared a profound insight: "In society, there are only two kinds of people; lambs and wolves. Lambs are perpetually preyed upon and killed, whereas wolves hunt and advance." He then posed a stark question: "Do you wish to be a lamb or a wolf?" Initially bewildered by his abrupt query, I pondered before responding, "Perhaps something in-between." His reply was swift and certain, "There is no middle ground, only these two. Show mercy and you'll be devoured in this world." This conversation was a turning point in understanding my father's complex character - his occasional harshness and rudeness, juxtaposed with moments of thoughtfulness. He maintained his gentle treatment of others, revealing a nuanced perspective of the constant struggle and conflict in human interactions. This book is my endeavour to document the events and experiences I have personally witnessed. It serves as a tapestry of social history, reflecting the intricate dance between the 'lambs' and 'wolves' of our society. My purpose in writing this book is only to record the events and things that I've witnessed with my own eyes.

This is a companion volume to the author's 2021 travel reminiscence, A PLAY OF INFINITE FORMS. Although Tom Weil didn't consult his Journal before writing that book, many of the entries include themes, ideas and conclusions contained in the reminiscence. In that way the two books are related, but at the same time quite distinct. While A PLAY OF INFINITE FORMS deals with the author's wide-ranging travels over the last half century, the Journal consists of home-based thoughts over the same 50-year period on a wide range of topics rather than on places. The good-natured and often humorous book covers a vast variety of stimulating observations and ideas-some of them rather eccentric or even quirky-which will inspire readers to view the world in novel ways. Those who read the piquant and quite digestible food-for-thought served in A FORM OF INFINITE PLAY will perceive their way of being with new perspectives, many of which occurred to the author when he was doing hand-stands and saw things upside down. From the usual and the visible Weil extracts some unusual, subtle and less obvious conclusions.

This book traces the evolution of Saint Thérèse's spirituality through the two volumes of her published General Correspondence. Each chapter is devoted to a particular correspondent and explores the nature and scope of the rapport Thérèse established with this individual. To achieve his objective, W. Bruce Ingram employs the avant¿garde medium of "Found Poetry" (see the Introduction for an explanation of this literary sub¿genre), which has never before been applied to the vast output of Theresian scholarship. It is his hope that this collection of ¿fty¿one found poems-abridged facets of äectionate exchanges that encapsulate the essence of the correspondence-will act as a gateway, a catalyst, prompting a more in¿depth study of and prayerful re¿ection on the doctrine of Saint Thérèse's "Little Way of Spiritual Childhood."Saint Thérèse of Lisieux: A Study In Verse öers anyone interested in spiritual enrichment or in the study of saints, as well as devotees of Saint Thérèse, a thoughtful and inspiring read.

  • von Ramón Espejo

This book delves into the fascinating journey of American drama in Catalonia, exploring how the theatrical output of a world superpower has impacted (and transformed) the stages of an allegedly minor actor in the cultural scene of the 20th century. Yet, while Catalonia is the birthplace of such geniuses as Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí or Antoni Gaudí, it is also that of playwrights Joan Brossa, Manuel de Pedrolo, Fermín Cabal or Jordi Galcerán, among others. All of them grew up in, and imbibed, a theatrescape in which American borrowings were not only habitual (often the only foreign plays around) but inspiring and groundbreaking. If Alias Jimmy Valentine re-defined theatrical decorum in Catalonia in the early 1900s, The Vagina Monologues, in the 1990s, challenged prevalent sexual taboos. Throughout the 20th century, Catalonia went from a peripheral, marginalized region of a once vast empire to a booming and largely autonomous centre of culture, recognized all over the world and admired for its uniqueness and original artistic contributions. American plays accompanied, and often directly inspired, such a journey.Ramón Espejo is a Professor of American Literature at the University of Seville, Spain, and is one of the leading American drama and theatre scholars in Europe.
