A historical biography about an ambitious, hardworking, and socially conscious resident of Deventer. He and his family sought their fortune in the Dutch East Indies, but encountered both happy moments and misfortune and tragedy. After a career in the military where he served in the engineering corps' communication division before and during World War I, Bram Waanders saw an opportunity to work at the Postal, Telegraph, and Telephone Service in the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch government began to see the East Indies as more than just a colony to exploit and invested in telephony and infrastructure. While this was a significant change, significant inequalities persisted between and within the various ethnic groups in the East Indies.Bram also saw inequality within his own profession. He was committed to actively combating this through his involvement in the union, the press, and politics. The crisis of the 1930s worsened the situation, but it also gave him a reason to step up his efforts. The rising ultra-nationalism and fascism in Europe and Asia were of a completely different nature, and threatened the existence and freedom of the colony. The consequences for Bram and his family would be dramatic.Anton Waanders (1970) has been researching his family history since 1997 and has published several genealogical works. With his latest book, he has taken a different path by writing a narrative biography. Using sources from the National Archive, the Royal Library, and family collections, the life of Bram Waanders and his family has been reconstructed. Bram should have been mentioned on the memorial monument for the fallen of the Communication Division, which was unveiled in the 1990s, but he was not. Waanders has successfully rectified this omission by giving a face to his grandfather's forgotten cousin and his East Indies family members in this story.

This biography of Saint Columba, the man responsible for bringing Christianity to Scotland in the 6th century AD, is filled with detail and insight.Columba was considered a man of great spiritual strength who braved the wild, untrammeled lands of rural Scotland at a time when it was ruled by tribes. Many legends are told of his miraculous abilities in fending off wild beasts, and in providing the remote peoples with compelling testimony in the one true God, and the divinity of Jesus Christ. Not only did Columba spread the word, he also established a series of monasteries which endured for centuries. Serving as the first abbot in ancient Ireland, his political influence and legacy was significant. The author, Saint Adamnan, was the ninth abbot of Ireland who assumed office late in the 7th century. Working from surviving accounts and sources of his era, he was able to recount his predecessor's deeds, prophecies and personality. This English translation of Adamnan was produced at Oxford University near the end of the 19th century; being among the few surviving texts of the era, this book is valuable for shedding light upon life and worship in Celtic cultures of long ago.

William Brewster was an important official who helped organize passage aboard the Mayflower, an English ship which took a group of migrating families to Massachusetts. This biography begins long before the Mayflower's famous voyage of 1620. We are treated to a deep examination of politics and religion in Elizabethan England, which shaped the actions which Brewster later took. His education in Cambridge, and early experience in the ambassadorial and diplomatic service, would prove invaluable to his later efforts in promoting the establishment of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. Much of the groundwork took place in Holland, where Brewster worked as a teacher, meeting a number of likeminded Puritans who aspired to a new life in North America. As we learn in this text, organizing and financing this trans-Atlantic journey was a complex and arduous task. As the most formally qualified and experienced passenger, Brewster was instrumental to readying the Mayflower ship and the families who joined the voyage. After some ten weeks at sea the colonists arrived in Plymouth, yet many soon perished amid a harsh winter. Several years on, Brewster lost two of his daughters to an outbreak of smallpox, while he himself survived and endured as the elder of Plymouth, dying in 1644 at about 76 years of age.

Daniel Gookin was a pioneering settler who resided in Virginia and Massachusetts, taking an interest in and writing about the Native Americans, toward whom he felt sympathy.Born in County Cork, Ireland, Gookin moved to his father's plantation in Virginia when he was aged only eighteen in 1630. Given a reference to his being a 'souldier', it is assumed that Gookin spent at least part of his youth in the military. Later in life he moved to the colonies of Massachusetts, becoming familiar with these and other lands. Gookin travelled to London on business multiple times, acting to relay information about newly discovered areas, their suitability for settlement, and challenges facing the colonists.Gookin gained distinction for his efforts to build rapport with the Native Americans. He promoted the conversion of natives to Christianity, with the eventual goal of permanent, peaceful coexistence. He also wrote two books about the native populations, and encouraged peace when violent conflicts such as King Philip's War broke out. He was also an early advocate for the lessening British influence upon the colonies.Frederick Gookin published this biography of his ancestor in 1912, piecing together many disparate sources in order to shed light on Daniel's life and deeds.

Charles Humphreys' autobiography recounts his years as a Union cavalry soldier in the U.S. Civil War; his activity fighting, being wounded and eventually captured and imprisoned. The author's experiences were exciting and varied, shedding light upon contrasting aspects of the war which carry historical value. Elderly at the time when he published his recollections in 1918, Humphreys briefly reflects about the still-ensuing World War I, noting the value of revealing the exposures and trials war places upon everyone involved. It was in the spirit of remembering the hardships of conflict that this memoir was composed; that readers be mindful of the sacrifices and privations unique to war.Humphreys' recollections are eloquent, multifaceted and nuanced, giving visual impressions of the battlefields, weaponry, field tents, trenches, fortifications, and the general atmosphere a Civil War soldier experienced. Dramatic horseback pursuits and moments of action are accompanied by the emotional and spiritual aspects of warfare: Humphreys was a young chaplain whose duty was to counsel and assure his fellow fighters of God's presence. Altogether we find on these pages a lively yet sensitive and life-affirming account of a war pivotal to American history and the life of the nation.

B-17 Down is the true story of (my dad) Captain Charles R. Phillips's incredible jump through his B-17 bomb bay doors from two hundred feet (indicated) onto a Berlin field. As pilot, he was the last to jump, but he and his entire crew survived their bailout and thirteen months as German POWs. Ahead of the Russian advance, the prisoners were forced to march for six days in bitter cold then spent two days on unheated cattle cars traveling from Poland into Germany. Patton's army arrived just in time to free the starving men. At five feet eleven, Charles weighed less than ninety pounds. Portrayed as historical fiction, much of the account is taken from a diary he wrote on the back of cigarette wrappers, flight log, letters, and from the memoirs of one of his crew. Charles's and his wife's war stories, historical research, and the author's imagination fill the gaps. B-17 Down begins when Charles met his wife, Doris, at his father's stock brokerage office. Their unconventional courtship led to an unconventional wedding in November 1942. Before his deployment to Bassingbourn, England, in September 1943, Doris followed him from air base to air base while he trained. In April 1944, just two months after the birth of their daughter (me), Doris received the fateful "missing in action" telegram. For six weeks, she had no idea whether Charles lived or died, but she didn't sit at home. Instead, she aided the war effort as POW chairwoman for Waterbury, Connecticut. When his B-17 went into a deadly spin, Charles said his life flashed before his eyes. The heavy bomber miraculously straightened after he prayed. He traced his salvation and strong faith in Jesus back to that moment, but his deprivations took a severe toll on his body. Rheumatoid arthritis froze his joints and shrank him to under five feet tall. All four of his children came to know the Lord in large measure because of his consistent walk with the Lord (three were born after he came home). He retired from the Air Force Reserve as lieutenant colonel and remained close friends with several of his crew throughout his life.

The Reverend Samuel Cotton and his wife Eliza founded The Caragh Orphanage in 1866. They then collected bountiful charitable donations towards the funding of this institution designed for the care of destitute Catholic babies and children. The money they collected was considerable and spread over a long period of time. However, little if any of this money ever went towards the children's welfare. The Cottons lived a life of ease and plenty while the poor vulnerable children literally starved to death. These children were kept in filth and squalor, in freezing conditions and dressed in rags. Thanks to the then recently founded Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children the law eventually caught up with the Cottons. Samuel was twice imprisoned. He was defended the first time by Sir William Carson. Cotton was a psychopath with a serious personality disorder and was irredeemable. He was obsessed with making children suffer and his wife Eliza, was of the exact same mind set. This story has never been told before. The Cotton's final resting place is unknown.© Dr Andrew Rynne 2023

Casey Station, 1981 was a unique year for all the expeditioners who served there for the 12 months in such an inhospitable, isolated, frozen, and barren environment found only in Antarctica. A special bond was formed within this year between the expeditioners, and every 5 years since return to the Australian mainland, there is a reunion in one of the Australian capital cities. A midwinter's dinner and the following day, relaxing and chatting late into the night about our adventurous times at Casey.Unique also is the fact that four of our expeditioners from Casey 1981 received the Australian Antarctic Medal and one received the distinguished Phillip Law Medal, for their bravery and services to Australia.I have produced this book to record some of our real-life stories, for the courageous and dependable expeditioners I wintered with, for their families and their future generations, and for those interested in the contributions of our Australian Antarctic Expeditioners. It is also intended as a reference book forthis era of Antarctic life at the four Australian Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic Research Stations (Macquarie Island, Casey, Mawson, and Davis), as this era is now recorded for future generations.

Reprint Edition of the 1938 Edition. Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's personal account of his experiences and observations fighting in the Spanish Civil War for the Republican army. Published in 1938 (about a year before the war ended) with little commercial success, it gained more attention in the 1950s following the success of Orwell's better-known works Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). Covering the period between December 1936 and June 1937, Orwell recounts Catalonia's revolutionary fervor during his training in Barcelona, his boredom on the front lines in Aragon, his involvement in the May Days conflict back in Barcelona on leave, his getting shot in the throat back on the front lines, and his escape to France after the Republican Army was declared an illegal organization. The war was one of the defining events of his political outlook and a significant part of what led him to write in 1946, "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it."
