"A 'true-to-life' understanding of a time when success seemed possible..." -Richard J. Wall, A ReviewerThere was a brief time in Vietnam, before the true American-Vietnamese war commenced, when the social and cultural influence of the French was progressively giving way to that of the newly arrived Americans. It was a time of relative peace, albeit interrupted by spasms of guerrilla warfare, amidst increasing political upheaval, and social change...and a time that produced humor, romance, and adventure. There was such a time, however brief, and herein are just such tales!

    21,00 €

Harold Bradley learned early in life, through family lore, that one of his great-great granduncles was an Irish sea captain. Sadly, the family lore was scanty. All it offered was a name, William Kelly, and two intriguing, albumin photographic prints-one of a large man squeezed into an ornate Victorian armchair; another of the same man, just head and shoulders, his penetrating gaze fixed on a distant point. Bradley couldn't help but wonder: Where did Captain Kelly go and what did he do in the so-called golden age of sail? After much determined sleuthing through historic newspapers, crew lists, ship logs, and other records including a passenger shipboard diary, the end result is SEAWARD, part biographical and historical memoir, part detective story. The book casts new light on Great Britain's 19th-century merchant navy-especially as the master mariners of one Irish family experienced this incomparable career. William Kelly (along with his younger brother, John) left wakes to trace and history to plumb, from Belfast and Liverpool to the Americas, British Guiana, Peru, India, Australia, and China. Their ships carried people with high hopes to far-flung destinations, while also moving agricultural produce and manufactured products around the world.Readers of SEAWARD will come away with a better understanding of 19th-century commercial seafaring as a business, along with a greater appreciation of the transgenerational connections that bind us to our ancestors. The ships are sailing. Let the stories begin.

In December 1980, an officer with the longshoremen's union in San Francisco learned that a shipment of military weapons on the docks was soon to be loaded onto a ship bound for the military dictatorship government of El Salvador. While the Salvadoran regime murdered thousands of its citizens, in the United States, Ronald Reagan was elected president on a conservative, union-busting agenda.Herb Mills, a local officer in the ILWU (International Longshore and Warehouse Union), led his union's campaign to refuse to load the weapons. But such a direct violation of their union contract could lead the government to jailing the officers and putting the union into receivership. How could the union stop the shipment and keep out of jail? Would the public support them and, if so, how? Would the press vilify or praise them?Based on his personal archives and historical union records, Mills fashions a fictional account of that campaign. The names have been changed, but the courage and the daring of the union men and women are not made up, they are all real, and now their story is told.

A teenager from Amish country enlists as an Army DJ during the Vietnam War, beginning a life of adventure and a storied career spanning decades and continents. When I opened my mic in the 1970s in Utapao, Thailand, I played music and cracked jokes, unaware people tuned in for far more than entertainment. In 1975, troops dialed in for breaking news on the planes crash landing around them in rice paddies. As the Cold War raged in Europe, my fellow DJs and I introduced a continent to wild, unpredictable music. After dodging bullets, mortars, and improvised explosive devices in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. warriors returned to base and decompressed with my network's live TV sports.Read behind the mic stories filled with humor, history, and home. Learn how America's GI broadcasters influenced hall-of-fame rockers, shaped the attitudes of foreign politicians and championed freedom of speech in this non-fiction book.

From First to Last"But now, since all restraint being removed, there was visited upon the downtrodden South, all that vile and malicious spleen, measures passed and brought to bear against a proud and valoureous people, too vile to contemplate and only could have emanated out of a heart blackened with sin and corruption, holding close communication with the devil and his unholy angel."From the book: "LIBERTY DETHRONED"Charles Montague Calhoun 1903This is a picture of my Great Grandfather, who was the first Monty Calhoun. I guess I will be the last. He was a great patriot that was twice wounded in battle during the War Between the States. He, and his father, Dr. Ramsey Calhoun brought the railroad to Greenwood, South Carolina and were the earliest settlers in that area. Earlier, in that same area, twenty two adults, mostly Calhouns, were massacred by the Cherokee Indians and thrown in a ditch. Nine children were scalped. This was known as the "Lone Cane Massacre." Maybe this is the reason that I've always had a great love for trains... and never owned a Jeep "Cherokee!"Glenn Beck and yours truly at his "Rally for America". This was back in 2003 which is exactly 100 years after my Great Grandfather's book. We provided 1000 "Patriotic CDs," at no charge, for those that attended. They went fast! Glenn has one in his hand. I really enjoyed meeting him. A fine young man and patriot.

[Lt Col Edward D (Moke) Murray]... an outstanding officer in the Indian Army and became a Gurkha commander in Malaya. In 1939 he fired the crucial shot that dispersed a strike that threatened the Raj. He became an outstanding leader in the fight against the Japanese in Assam and Burma. He suppressed the Viet Minh in Saigon in 1945, in what can be seen as the start of the Vietnam War. He was Allied Land Commander in Cambodia and supervised the surrender of the Japanese there. In 1953 he was cheered by millions along the eight-kilometre route of Elizabeth II's coronation parade as he marched at the head of the hugely popular Gurkha contingent. But when he died not a single obituary of him appeared, apart from a short notice in the Gurkha gazette. From Anthony Barnett's IntroductionWhat sort of man was 'Moke' Murray, this forgotten Achilles of the dying British Empire? He served his King in wars from Waziristan to Burma and helped to shape the future of Indochina. But, as this touching and fascinating biography recounts, he ended his life in lonely poverty as the Empire itself dissolved and fell out of memory. Neal Ascherson, novelist, reporter and historian

In 1897, a young Calabrian peasant named Giuseppe Musolino was sentenced to 21 years of hard labor for a crime he did not commit. However, defying all odds, he orchestrated a daring escape and embarked on a relentless pursuit of those responsible for his wrongful conviction, exacting a chilling and deadly retribution. Evading capture for nearly three years, he cunningly outmaneuvered a vast manhunt consisting of hundreds of local and regional police, the Carabinieri, and even an Italian Army regiment. His exploits transformed him into a beloved Robin Hood figure among the inhabitants of the Mezzogiorno, the impoverished southern region of Italy. However, to the authorities, he was a cold-blooded murderer who had to be stopped. Eventually apprehended, the Ministry of Justice relocated his trial 600 miles to the north, from Reggio di Calabria to Lucca, due to its belief that no jury in the south would convict him. The trial captured the attention of newspapers around the world. When Giuseppe Musolino passed away in 1956, half a century after his capture, TIME magazine aptly remarked, "Few adventurers, past or present, have become so legendary in so short a time."

Charles Watkins sailed for the Dardanelles with the 1/6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915. War, he said, was a welcome escape from hard labour in a Lancashire cotton mill. Fifty years later, he wrote his memoir, a 'hotch-potch of Gallipoli memories.'"In perpetrating this literary outrage, some apology is due. I could give many plausible excuses for recording moments of this disastrous campaign, but the real truth is the selfish pleasure I find in recalling one crowded hour of glorious life. It was my very good fortune to serve with a Lancashire Territorial Division. To the memory of those contumacious, argumentative, sentimental and lovable Lancashire lads - 'Salud.' No better comrades ever trod the field of battle...""Students of military strategy and tactics had best throw this book away for they'll learn nothing from it. In fact, I know even less of strategy and tactics than did the High-Ups who conducted the campaign. What's more, a lowly private soldier sees very little of the larger picture of war - his own grubby little nose is always buried too deeply in his own particular patch of the dung-heap..."The campaign is not short of operational histories, but few accounts get into the mind of the private soldier so successfully."The trouble," says Watkins, "is that most old soldiers develop a reluctance to talk - except perhaps after a few drinks, and when we seem, then, to get a little boastful and silly. At best, and when we are stone-sober, we feel we are merely a little boring to a new and unsympathetic generation."So we clam-up. We leave it to the cold, clinical dissection of historians to record the battles, the victories... and the defeats. The live and vivid experiences of the soldiers themselves are seldom, if ever, recorded - which is a pity, for without these how can the atmosphere of the times themselves ever be made to come to life."Lost Endeavour was published for 'limited and private circulation' in 1970, then again in 1982.For this modern edition, the editors have added a short biography of Watkins as an appendix, alongside several articles he wrote for the Gallipoli Association's journal, 'The Gallipolian'. For background and context, the editors include their notes on individuals, places and events mentioned by Watkins in the text. The reader will also find detail on the 6th Lancs Fusiliers at Helles - the battalion's establishment, drafts and battle casualties, a timeline for May to December 1915, eight maps, and a Gallipoli roll of honour.

It has been nearly fifty years since a biography of Arthur Calwell, Labor federal member from 1940 to 1972, Minister for Immigration and later leader of the Opposition. His massive immigration program in the immediate postwar period began the transformation of Australia into a multicultural nation. Calwell served under the best (Chifley) and possibly the most difficult (Evatt) of the Labor leaders, and remained loyal to the Labor cause when it split in the mid 1950s when its future looked bleak. Yet, after becoming leader in 1960 he almost defeated then Prime Minister Menzies at the 1961 election and did much to restore Labor's faith in itself as well as to renew policy for the nation. However, two subsequent election defeats in 1963 and 1966 meant Calwell had to make way for the younger Gough Whitlam in 1967. He retired at the 1972 election which saw Labor finally back in office. So, this is a story of conviction, belief and persistence through the long period of 23 years in the political wilderness. This new monograph, researched by Professor James Franklin with Gerry O Nolan not only refreshes our memory about Arthur Calwell, the long-serving politician, but also Calwell the man, including his Catholic religious beliefs which figured far more prominently in public life and personal considerations than for most politicians today.James Franklin's previous books include Corrupting the Youth: A History of Philosophy in Australia, The Real Archbishop Mannix (with Gerry O Nolan) and Catholic Thought and Catholic Action. He is Honorary Professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney and editor of the Journal of the Australian Catholic Historical Society.
