  • von Ronald T. Ridley

Marcus Furius Camillus is the dominant figure in our traditional history of the Roman Republic in the early fourth century. He has been featured in histories of Rome since the Renaissance, but currently is viewed with great scepticism, some even questioning his very existence. What is notably absent, however, is any reference to a system of historical method: how one distinguishes fact from fiction. This is the first modern monograph on Camillus, and it grapples head-on with this problem. The results are unexpected.

  • von Larry Buttermore

What started out as an epilogue turned into a book of its own. The 13 stories you will read are compelling. They should be. Told by actual combat veterans of the Vietnam conflict, they reflect on so many battles that were fought; battles that were of the "kill, or be killed" type. The stories are, at times, raw. Other times they are humorous. Some end well, some do not. I learned that these men still carry many burdens that started when they got to Vietnam. I found that the end of their time in service never really ended. Many still suffer. Agent Orange was a culprit. P.T.S.D. was another. None were unscathed. I was able to interview two family members of a pilot who lost his life in Vietnam. From this, I learned of the long-lasting effects on family. Each I interviewed a POW from that conflict. I still find it hard to believe that this man came back alive. He's still alive and using his story for good. One thing for sure is that every one of these fine gentlemen are heroes of the highest order. I found them humble and unassuming about taking on this role. I hope this book will elevate them to their proper place, along with their countless comrades in arms.

Stanley Lawrence Carroll and Doreen McGlinn were ordinary West Australians who lived through the Great Depression and World War II and went on to raise a close and loving family.Their ancestors came to Australia between 1830 and 1871 as free settlers, convicts, military men, and others, all wanting to make a new life in a new country. The stories outline the hardships this family had to endure and the grit and determination required to make a success of their lives in a new country. These families include the Ashworths and McGlinns from York, the Pollards from Guildford, the Gawneds from Claremont (originally from Victoria), the Carrolls from Claremont (originally from the Goulburn area of NSW), the Kemps and Buckleys from Greenough and Geraldton, the Tillings and Williams from South Australia.Their stories are an important social history of ordinary citizens who, for whatever reason, settled in Australia soon after colonisation.

JJ unravels the mystery of how John Jameson, a small-town Scottish lawyer, became the founder of a billion-dollar Irish whiskey.Humble beginnings are found in Alloa and 18th Century Scotland, where a highwayman would be better off robbing himself. Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite rebellion is just around the corner, and so too is the Industrial Revolution. Volcanos, gin wars, and large-scale bankruptcies also play their part in the fortunes of a canny man. But John Jameson's marriage to Peggie Haig, an Alloa tobacconist's daughter, holds the key to his success.A revelation for whiskey enthusiasts and entertainment for us all, JJ is the story of John Jameson, a son of Scotland who became an Irish King.

"The lavishly illustrated The Call to Serve is an intimate, illuminating portrait of the 41st U. S. President, a man many know mainly through his politics. Jon Meacham brings the leader vividly to life, including as a man dedicated to political and moral leadership, and to a life marked by the strong values of integrity and respect for others that Bush learned during his childhood. Bush pursued a life of service to America and to others, including through action in the Pacific during World War II, his political rise to Congressman in Texas, then his serving as U. S. Ambassador to the UN, director of the CIA, Vice President during the administration of Ronald Reagan, and as President. Set against the historical background of periods in America during the 20th and 21st century, this book celebrates the legacy of a man many people do not know, whose bedrock beliefs in honesty and respect for the dignity of others led to a life of leadership viewed as a call to serve. Obama said towards the end of Bush's life that he put the country first, throughout his life, 'both before he was president, while he was president, and ever since.'"--
