The life of Töhötöm Nagy (1908-1979), Jesuit, Mason, and secret service agent, offers fascinating insights into interwar Hungary, the Catholic Church and Vatican diplomacy, Freemasonry, and the activities of communist state security service. As a young Jesuit Nagy was one of the leaders of a successful Catholic youth movement in interwar Hungary. After World War II he played an important role acting as an intermediary between the Vatican, the Red Army, and the Hungarian Catholic Church. After being sent to South America, he was attracted by liberation theology, but left the Society of Jesus, joined the Freemasons, and did social and philanthropic work in the slums of Buenos Aires. However, in the late 1960s he agreed to work for the Hungarian state security service in return for his repatriation. This latter period is reconstructed from the files of the Historical Archives of State Security in Budapest. Éva Petrás writes with empathy but with a sense of distance of the courage and restless energy of her subject. Her discussion of the limits of free choice and Nagy's intense struggle to live a meaningful life make this biography breathtaking.

Dive into the profound life and groundbreaking ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher, cultural critic, and literary genius, in 'Friedrich Nietzsche: The Biography of a Cultural Critic that Redefined Power, Will, Good and Evil.' Born on October 15, 1844, Nietzsche embarked on a remarkable intellectual journey that would revolutionize contemporary philosophy and shape the course of human thought. Beginning his career as a classical philologist, Nietzsche quickly transitioned to philosophy and astounded the academic world by becoming the youngest person ever to hold the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel at the tender age of 24. However, relentless health issues plagued Nietzsche, leading to his resignation in 1879. Despite his struggles, Nietzsche dedicated the following decade to completing the core writings that would establish him as one of the most influential thinkers of all time. Tragedy struck Nietzsche in 1889 when, at the age of 44, he experienced a mental collapse that left him incapacitated, paralyzed, and likely suffering from vascular dementia. Supported by his mother and later his sister, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, Nietzsche spent his remaining years under their care until his death in 1900, succumbing to pneumonia and multiple strokes. In 'Friedrich Nietzsche: The Biography of a Cultural Critic that Redefined Power, Will, Good and Evil,' readers will explore Nietzsche's vast body of work, which spans philosophical polemics, poetry, cultural criticism, and fiction, revealing his penchant for aphorism and irony. Prominent elements of Nietzsche's philosophy, such as his radical critique of truth in favor of perspectivism, his genealogical critique of religion and morality, and his aesthetic affirmation of life in the face of the "death of God" and nihilism, are meticulously examined. This captivating biography unravels Nietzsche's revolutionary concepts, including the Übermensch (Overman) and the doctrine of eternal return, and delves into his preoccupation with the individual's creative power to challenge societal norms and embrace new values. It explores Nietzsche's profound insights into art, music, tragedy, religion, and culture, drawing inspiration from Greek tragedy and influential figures like Zoroaster, Arthur Schopenhauer, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Richard Wagner, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Furthermore, 'Friedrich Nietzsche: The Biography of a Cultural Critic that Redefined Power, Will, Good and Evil' sheds light on the controversial manipulation of Nietzsche's unpublished writings by his sister, Elisabeth, who distorted his opinions to align with her ultranationalist ideology. It also discusses the subsequent efforts by scholars like Walter Kaufmann, R. J. Hollingdale, and Georges Bataille to defend Nietzsche's true intent and provide corrected editions of his works. This immersive biography is a must-read for both enthusiasts and scholars seeking a comprehensive understanding of Nietzsche's transformative life and enduring impact. It examines how his ideas have resonated throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries, influencing philosophy, art, literature, poetry, politics, and popular culture. 'Friedrich Nietzsche' is a captivating exploration of a brilliant mind that forever altered the way we perceive power, will, good, and evil.

Constantine the Great was one of the most influential Roman emperors, who, in 312 AD declared tolerance for Christianity and convoked the First Council of Nicaea, which produced the statement of Christian belief known as the Nicene Creed. His legacy led to Constantinople becoming an imperial residence and later capital city of Byzantine Empire, setting up a transition from classical antiquity to Middle Ages. These Founders sought to establish a political identity that was distinct from European aristocratic traditions.

On the 14th of August 1941, a Polish monk named Maximilian Maria Kolbe was murdered in Auschwitz.Kolbe's life had been remarkable. Fiercely intelligent and driven, he founded a movement of Catholicism and spent several years in Nagasaki, ministering to the 'hidden Christians' who had emerged after centuries of oppression. A Polish nationalist as well as a monk, he gave sanctuary to fleeing refugees and ran Poland's largest publishing operation, drawing the wrath of the Nazis. His death was no less remarkable: he volunteered to die, saving the life of a fellow prisoner. It was an act that profoundly transformed the lives of two Japanese men. Tomei Ozaki was just seventeen when the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, destroying his home and his family. Masatoshi Asari worked on a farm in Hokkaido during the war and was haunted by the inhumane treatment of prisoners in a nearby camp. Forged in the crucible of an unforgiving war, both men drew inspiration from Kolbe's sacrifice, dedicating their lives to humanity and justice. In The Martyr and the Red Kimono, award-winning author Naoko Abe weaves together a deeply moving and inspirational true story of resistance, sacrifice, guilt and atonement.

"Our times again are rich in memoirs, perhaps richer than ever before. It is because there is much to tell. The more dramatic and rich in change the epoch, the more intense the interest in current history. The art of landscape-painting could never have been born in the Sahara. The "crossing" of two epochs, as at present, gives rise to a desire to look back at yesterday, already far away, through the eyes of its active participants. That is the reason for the enormous growth in the literature of reminiscence since the days of the last war. Perhaps it will justify the present volume as well.""The very fact of its coming into the world is due to the pause in the author's active political life. One of the unforeseen, though not accidental, stops in my life has proved to be Constantinople. Here I am camping - but not for the first time - and patiently waiting for what is to follow. The life of a revolutionary would be quite impossible without a certain amount of "fatalism." In one way or another, the Constantinople interval has proved the most appropriate moment for me to look back before circumstances allow me to move forward."

The British in Italy is a fascinating exploration of the enduring relationship between the English and Italians, dating back to the times of Shakespeare, Leghorn, The Grand Tour, Florence, and Venice, up to the cataclysmic events of World War II. The author draws parallels between Victorian England's progress and the Italian Renaissance, particularly the British presence in Italy during the 19th century. In a unique approach, the author embarks on a journey through Italy, beginning in the Alps and continuing on foot and by bicycle from Monviso to Trieste, then down to Sicily. Along the way, he rediscovers the forgotten Anglo-Saxon characters who played a significant role in shaping Italy's cultural, artistic, and scientific landscape, such as the true Count of Montecristo, textile industrialists, inventors, painters, archaeologists, botanists, and travelers. Their stories are intertwined with the author's encounters, memories, lost friends, legends, and conversations, providing a rich tapestry of Italy's diverse history and culture. The book is a veritable treasure trove of knowledge and insight, revealing Italy's layers of history and culture from a unique Anglo-Saxon perspective. As Doctor Johnson aptly said, "A man who has not been in Italy, is always conscious of an inferiority, from his not having seen what it is expected a man should see." This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to discover the true heart of Italy and the enduring bond between the English and Italians.

Catherine the Great is widely regarded as one of the most influential and powerful figures in European history. She ruled Russia during a period of immense growth, leading to new cities, universities, and theatres which furthered immigrants from Europe while also recognizing Russia's status as one of the world's great powers. Through her enlightened despotism philosophy, she encouraged advances in science and culture which unlocked potential for Russians everywhere. Her reign was not without tumult however; military conscription heavily relied on serfdom while peasant rebellions were commonplace. Yet even amidst turmoil she instituted reforms such as freeing nobles from state service with her Manifesto and creating a higher education institution for women - the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens - all hallmarks of her legacy today. The brilliance and ambition instilled by Catherine has shaped Russian culture ever since her death more than two centuries ago.
