Mai in die Aula der Schule sowie die »nichtarische Abstammung« einzelner Kollegiumsmitglieder thematisiert wurden. Für Dr. Walter Bacher (1893 - 1944), Sohn jüdischer Eltern, die ihn gleich nach der Geburt hatten taufen lassen, Sozialdemokrat und seit Jahren ein beliebter und engagierter Lehrer an der Schule, und seine ebenfalls sozialdemokratische, aus einer jüdischen Familie stammende Frau Clara Bacher geb. Haurwitz (1898 - 1944) begann an diesem Tag ein beruflicher und persönlicher Niedergang. Nach langer Arbeitslosigkeit und mehreren Jahren als Lehrer an der jüdischen Talmud Tora Schule wurde Walter Bacher zusammen mit seiner Frau in das Ghetto Theresienstadt deportiert und 1944 im KZ Auschwitz ermordet. Barbara Brix zeichnet das Leben der beiden engagierten Lehrkräfte in Text und Bild nach und leistet damit auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Aufarbeitung nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung im Schulbereich. Das Buch ist eine stark erweiterte Neuausgabe der 1997 erschienenen Biografie Walter Bachers von Barbara Brix.

Kriegie: Prisoner of War, first published in 1960, is the World War Two account of American airman Kenneth Simmons (8th Air Force) who was forced to bail out after his aircraft was damaged on a bombing run over Germany. He describes his capture and imprisonment as a 'kriegie' (prisoner-of-war) at Stalag Luft II. The book is filled with details of prison life and the complex organization established by the prisoners to help ensure their survival, and to maintain healthy conditions and order. Escape plans are made and tunnels constructed. Near the end of the war, and in the cold of winter, the prisoners are moved on foot to a new location in Germany in what became a "death march" with many prisoners dying or extremely ill. In late April 1945, units of General George Patton's Third Army reach the camp, and prepare the men for their journey back to the United States.

Nach ersten Arbeiten an Schlössern, Stadtpalästen und einer Wallfahrtskapelle wurde Holl von der Reichsstadt Augsburg 1602 zum Stadtwerkmeister berufen. Elias Holl hat seine Heimat­stadt während seiner langen Amtszeit maßgeblich umgestaltet und zur Renaissanc­e­stadt werden lassen­. Holls Augsburger Hauptwerk ist das von ihm geplante, bis 1620 fertig­gestellte monumentale Rathaus.Neben einer Reihe Holl'scher Bauten erinnern in Augsburg et­liche Darstellungen, Denkmäler sowie der Elias-Holl-Platz beim Rathaus an den Stadtwerkmeister. Am Ende hat die Reichsstadt Elias Holl seine Lebensleistung übel gedankt: Denn als er sogar nach dem Restitutionsedikt von 1629 dem Neuen Glauben treu blieb, wurde er 1631 ent­lassen und um sein in der Stadtkasse angelegtes Geld betrogen. Elias Holl verstarb 1646 in Augsburg.Der Architekt und Handwerker-Ingenieur Holl war auch als Festungs- und Wasserbauer gefragt. Daran erinnert in Augsburg ein Objekt des UNESCO-Welterbes. Auf das Wirken und auf Werke Holls stößt man nicht nur in und bei Augsburg, sondern auch im Donautal und Altmühltal, in Franken und Tirol.

The writer of these letters was a mere boy when he entered the Confederate service, as a member of the Fourth Regiment South Carolina Volunteers, where he served during the first year of the war, being respectively in the commands of Generals Evans and Jones. He afterwards served in the "Palmetto Sharpshooters," attached from time to time to Generals Anderson's, Jenkins' and Bratton's Brigades, and to General Longstreet's, Pickett's, Hood's and Fields' Divisions. He subsequently served in General Longstreet's Corps. The letters were written by Lieut. Richard Lewis, to his mother, at various times during the war, and are printed "just as they were written there and then," and illustrate the facts and inspirations of Camp Life, Marches, &c., as created in the then youthful mind of the writer.
