  • von Brittney Griner
    24,00 €

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A TIME MUST-READ BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the nine-time women’s basketball icon and two-time Olympic gold medalist—a raw, revelatory account of her unfathomable detainment in Russia and her journey home.“Compelling . . . An intimate, honest recollection of Griner’s time held captive in Russia. Coming Home reads as a deeply personal, publicly powerful documentation of what happened—what is still happening—to her body and mind.” —Slate On February 17, 2022, Brittney Griner arrived in Moscow ready to spend the WNBA offseason playing for the Russian women’s basketball team where she had been the centerpiece of previous championship seasons. Instead, a security checkpoint became her gateway to hell when she was arrested for mistakenly carrying under one gram of medically prescribed hash oil. Brittney’s world was violently upended in a crisis she has never spoken in detail about publicly—until now.In Coming Home, Brittney finally shares the harrowing details of her sudden arrest days before Russia invaded Ukraine; her bewilderment and isolation while navigating a foreign legal system amid her trial and sentencing; her emotional and physical anguish as the first American woman ever to endure a Russian penal colony while the #WeAreBG movement rallied for her release; the chilling prisoner swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout; and her remarkable rise from hostage to global spokesperson on behalf of America’s forgotten. In haunting and vivid detail, Brittney takes readers inside the horrors of a geopolitical nightmare spanning ten months.  And yet Coming Home is more than Brittney’s journey from captivity to freedom. In an account as gripping as it is poignant, she shares how her deep love for Cherelle, her college sweetheart and wife of six years, anchored her during their greatest storm; how her family’s support pulled her back from the brink; and how hundreds of letters from friends and neighbors lent her resolve to keep fighting. Coming Home is both a story of survival and a testament to love—the bonds that brought Brittney home to her family, and at last, to herself.

No player in the history of baseball has left such an indelible mark on the game as San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds. In his twenty-year career, Bonds has amassed an unprecedented seven MVP awards, eight Gold Gloves, and more than seven hundred home runs, an impressive assortment of feats that has earned him consideration as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Equally deserved, however, is his reputation as an insufferable braggart, whose mythical home runs are rivaled only by his legendary ego. From his staggering ability and fabled pedigree (father Bobby played outfield for the Giants; cousin Reggie Jackson and godfather Willie Mays are both Hall of Famers) to his well-documented run-ins with teammates and the persistent allegations of steroid use, Bonds inspires a like amount of passion from both sides of the fence. For many, Bonds belongs beside Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron in baseball's holy trinity; for others, he embodies all that is wrong with the modern athlete: aloof; arrogant; alienated. In Love Me, Hate Me, author Jeff Pearlman offers a searing and insightful look into one of the most divisive athletes of our time. Drawing on more than five hundred interviews -- with former and current teammates, opponents, managers, trainers, friends, and outspoken critics and unapologetic supporters alike -- Pearlman reveals, for the first time, a wonderfully nuanced portrait of a prodigiously talented and immensely flawed American icon whose controversial run at baseball immortality forever changed the way we look at our sports heroes.

From his rap sheet to his rap album, fans and journalists alike hound his every move. But never before has a biographer presented a full portrait of this complicated and intensely private star -- a man whose loyalty to his family, the streets, and his friends trumps any other concern. Filled with exclusive interview material and unprecedented access to many of Iverson's inner circle, Only the Strong Survive is the first in-depth look at the truth behind this newly minted legend.

Philippe Thys was the first rider to win the Tour three times. His guts typified him: three times he smoothly predicted his Tour victories. In the 1914 Tour, he led the general classification from the first to the last stage. World War I struck at the height of his powers. The cycling champion became a volunteer aircraft mechanic in the Belgian army. What would his list of honors have looked like without this bloody interlude ?Philippe Thys was the first dedicated rounder of his generation. His preparation with sophisticated training work was far ahead of its time and closer to that of Froome, than to the practices of his contemporaries Lapize or Faber. In his own words, Philippe Thys was also at the cradle of the yellow jersey, perhaps the first yellow jersey wearer ever.Thys did not focus only on the Tour. His palmares include Paris-Tours and the Tour of Lombardy, he excelled in Paris-Roubaix, won six-day races and also became the first Belgian cyclo-cross champion in 1910. Despite that list of honors, Philippe Thys' name has faded away in the mists of time. After a hundred years of oblivion, this book finally gives him his due credit."How unfortunate that that war interrupted cycling. No Tour de France for four years and that in my best years. Damn, without it I could have won at least two more Rounds."Johan Van Win (b. 1960) has been snooping around the past of the underrated Brussels monde du cyclisme for years. With this work on Philippe Thys, he unlocks a piece of his archival data in story form: because le triple vainqueur is the biggest blind spot in cycling history.

Sylveer Maes (Gistel, 1909-1966) won the Tour de France twice: in 1936 and 1939. After that, it would take no less than thirty years before, with Eddy Merckx, another Belgian won the world's most important stage race. Perhaps Maes could have won the Tour even more often, but the Second World War broke out precisely in his best years. And then, not to forget, there was that infamous 1937 edition, when French chauvinism reached boiling point and the weary Belgians left the Tour four days before the end - and with Sylveer Maes in yellow! - dropped out of the Tour. Sylveer Maes excelled in the Tour, but was above all a versatile rider. He won Paris- Roubaix, for instance, and was also active both on the track and in the field. And yet. Despite his great achievements, Sylveer Maes' name seems to have pretty much faded away in the mists of time. Eighty years after his last Tour victory, Patrick Cornillie brings him back from oblivion with this comprehensive and lavishly illustrated biography. Patrick Cornillie (1961) is a poet and writer, journalist and author of a whole series of cycling guides and cycling books. He has published biographies on Freddy Maertens (2003), Gilbert Desmet (2004) and Marcel Kint (2011), as well as, among others, 'De Zomer van '69. How Merckx won from Armstrong' (2009) and 'Racing in the Great War' (2018).

An extraordinary account of the life of unknown club boxer, Frank Steele, who sparred with legendary boxing greats like Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier and Ernie Shavers. Impoverished from birth and poorly educated, Frank did the best he could to parlay his boxing prowess and brute strength into fame and fortune. Hired as Foreman's chief sparring partner to help prepare the champ for the Ali "Rumble in the Jungle" fight in Africa, he was fired after doing his job too well -- beating up Foreman and knocking his headgear into the audience. When Ali heard about the incident, he paid Frank $3,000 for the secret to defeating the unbeaten and seemingly invincible champion. This is the untold story of what lead to the greatest upset in boxing history.Ben Clement's research for this book included nine months of interviews with Frank Steele, researching boxing history, and speaking with one of Frank's promoters and the residents of Gary who remembered "The Man of Steel". Ben believes that Frank represents all of the nobodies out there whose lives lack notoriety or infamy, but still have dignity, value and importance nonetheless. He's inspired most by his parents, Fanny & Thestal Clement, and others in their generation who braved the dangers and indignities of racism and inequality while raising black children to become responsible, productive, successful, influential, and patriotic Americans. Ben grew up, and still lives, in Gary, Indiana.

The Dodgers and Me, first published in 1948, is Hall of Fame baseball player and manager Leo "The Lip" Durocher's account of his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Beginning with a history of the club and owner Charley Ebbets, to Durocher's arrival from St. Louis in 1938, the book details, in an often humorous manner, the rise of the cellar-dwelling Dodgers to their first pennant in 21 years. Manager Durocher goes on to detail the next five seasons of the team in this fascinating look at the Brooklyn Dodgers and major league baseball. Included are 10 pages of illustrations. Durocher, suspended for a year in a feud with Yankee owner Larry MacPhail, would return to the Dodgers in 1948 but was let go and hired by the rival New York Giants where he stayed until the end of the 1955 season. In 1966, Durocher returned to baseball as manager of the Chicago Cubs (1966-1972), and the Houston Astros (1972-73), before retiring. Durocher passed away in 1991 at the age of 86.
