Eine der ungewöhnlichsten Gestalten aus Hesses Freundeskreis ist der Psychoanalytiker Josef Bernhard Lang (1881-1945). Ohne diesen, C.G. Jung nahestehenden, Arzt wäre es dem Dichter wohl kaum geglückt, die tiefe Depression zu überwinden, in die ihn der Erste Weltkrieg gebracht hatte. Die Zäsur in Hesses Werk, die mit dem Demian einsetzte, sein Weg vom traditionsverbundenen Erzähler zum experimentierfreudigen Visionär künftiger Entwicklungen, nahm damals ihren Anfang. Durch J.B. Lang, der u.a. ein Buch unter dem Titel Hat ein Gott die Welt erschaffen? publizierte, lernte Hesse das Weltbild der Gnostiker und deren Abraxas-Symbolik kennen, die lange vor Nietzsche das traditionelle Denken in Frage stellte. »Andre Leute mögen dies und jenes von Kunst verstehen«, schrieb Hesse an Lang, »aber die dunkle und wilde Seite der Seele versteht niemand so gut wie du.« Die sich schon bald zur Freundschaft entwickelnde Beziehung zeigt Lang als Hesses Agenten bei der Bewältigung seiner familiären Probleme, zugleich aber auch, wie sich die Rolle von Arzt und Patient allmählich umkehrte. Von Schicksalsschlägen getroffen, war Lang schließlich selbst auf Hesses Hilfe angewiesen. Lang war es auch, der Hesse den Anstoß zur Aquarellmalerei gab. Im Verlauf ihrer Gesprächstherapie forderte er ihn auf, seine Träume nicht nur mündlich, sondern auch bildnerisch darzustellen. Dabei entdeckte Hesse sein Talent zum Malen und Zeichnen. Bis heute galt diese Korrespondenz als verschollen. überraschend ist sie nun aufgetaucht und wird hier erstmals vollständig publiziert. Der Briefwechsel gibt einen faszinierenden Einblick in eine Beziehung, die im April 1916 beginnt und 1945 mit dem Tod Langs als Patient jener psychiatrischen Klinik endet, in der seine ärztliche Laufbahn begann.
