  • von Natasha S Alford
    29,00 €

An award-winning journalist, TV political analyst, and creator of theGrio documentary, Afro-Latinx Revolution: Puerto Rico, recounts her experiences as an African American and Puerto Rican woman, reflecting on her improbable journey from Syracuse to Harvard, hedge fund boardrooms to newsrooms, and beyond in pursuit of America's infinite opportunities. Part inspiring memoir, part cultural analysis, with remarkable self-determination, Natasha S. Alford shows why the movement to recognize Afro-Latin identity illuminates shared struggles across the Black diaspora and often overlooked history.Award-winning journalist Natasha S. Alford grew up between two worlds as the daughter of an African American father and Puerto Rican mother. In American Negra, a narrative that is part memoir, part cultural analysis, Alford reflects on growing up as a Black Latina in a working-class family from the city of Syracuse. In smart, vivid prose, Alford illustrates the complexity of being multiethnic in Upstate New York and society's flawed teachings about matters of identity. When she travels to Puerto Rico for the first time, she is the darkest in her family, and navigates shame for not speaking Spanish fluently. She visits African-American hair salons where she's told that she has "good" hair, while internalizing images from Spanish-language media that she has "bad" hair or pelo malo. When Alford goes from an underfunded public school system to Harvard University surrounded by privilege and pedigree, she wrestles with more than her own ethnic identity, as she is faced with imposter syndrome, and a struggle to define success on her own terms. A study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic changes her perspective on being Afro-Latina and sets her on a path to better understand her own Latin roots.Alford then embarks on a whirlwind journey to find her authentic voice, taking her across the United States from a hedge fund boardroom to a classroom and ultimately a newsroom, as a journalist. A coming-of-age story about what it's like to live at the intersections of race, culture, and class, while staying true to yourself, American Negra is a captivating look at what it means to be both Black and Negra in the United States. As a growing movement to embrace Afro-Latino identity gains recognition, American Negra illustrates the diversity of the Afro-Latin experience in the larger fabric of American society.

Kemp Jaycox was busy leading a typical life, active with sports, family and working in his environmental science career. Then came a stomach virus that caused his immune system to overreact, resulting in a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Now, in a race against time as his body shuts down and makes the simplest task impossible, he is intent on telling his life story to offer hope to others. His story is rooted in this unrelenting disease, but also in tragic deaths and unfathomable grief experienced in Kemp's formative years. While these experiences could have crushed him, Kemp has instead learned lessons of courage and survivorship from them. He has found the resilience and perseverance needed to chart a new purpose and meaning for his life. Kemp's story is at once heartbreaking and comical. It is tragic and joyful. It is proof that each of us leads a life precious and fragile. His hope is that others can find inspiration and resilience from learning his story and chart a purpose and meaning against whatever odds they face.

  • von Kirsten Reneau
    21,00 €

In unflinching yet hopeful prose, this debut memoir in essays explores the most animal parts of our human nature. Discussions of various creatures in the natural world serve as portals to the painful realities Kirsten Reneau confronts in the process of breaking-and remaking-a home. Honest in their descriptions of sexual assault and its traumatic effects, these essays are at once clinical and lyrical reflections on the ways that desire can permeate our lives for better or worse, as well as how it can be channeled into a lifegiving force for women in a world often hostile to their basic needs. Sensitive Creatures ultimately is a story of darkness, resilience, and the light that still manages to crack through.

When Ian and Robyn started on their epic 5,330 kms packhorse journey there were many unknowns. There had been little time to prepare due to the approaching winter which brings ice 8 snow to the high country. But after a busy few weeks, here they were at the southern end of Australia's National Trail in the early Autumn of 1994. They departed in miserable wet conditions with 4 horses and a mule. Things didn't improve much in the early part. Conditions Stressed Robyn and she the trip after a few weeks. A major adjustment for Ian. Sad and disappointed, he faced a choice. He chose to ride on alone. Ian had been on a lone motorbike trip through northern Australia in 1992, ending near the Central Australian city of Alice Springs where he found work on an outback tourist resort with camels and horses in the following year. Robyn visited and something clicked between them. In early 1994 having left the resort they were and tempted by the idea of the relatively new Bicentennial National Trail (BNT) and were keen to take on that challenge. Soon after, away they went - mindful of earlier horse deaths, injuries, 8 tragedies on the trail There were many challenges: from the wet 8 freezing cold Autumn/Winter weather in the south, through the drought conditions further north, and into the steamy tropical wet season of the far north; dealing with new relationships - new travelling companions; the confusion and frustration of inaccurate directions; adjusting to long distance travel with equine companions and their needs; managing continual horse sores; some dangerous situations; alternating between bush and road travel; and a serious shortage of money. After a month of solo travel - a new travelling companion Ian, from Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.). From the outset there were difficulties in the relationship - incompatible agendas, personalities, and travelling habits. They endured through the highs and lows for a month and a half, with another rider joining in. The trio faced many physical challenges, which accentuated their differences, resulting in another separation at a high country camp in New South Wales. Again Ian continued alone, with many chance meetings - this time all the way into Cooktown some 5 1/2 months later, a total of 8 h months travel. Highlights described in the story were the many high country bush camps, the incredible friendliness 8 hospitality of new friends met along the way - with a couple of notable exceptions the iconic brumbies, and the numerous on-air discussions - from remote telephone boxes - with Ian McNamara (Macca) of the "Australia All Over" program on national A.B.C. radio. Audience responses to those interviews were a strong feature of the trip. Somehow, Ian also manages to oversee the publishing of Cliff Young's book entitled "Cliffy's Book" during the trip - the amazing story of Cliff Young who wins the Sydney-Melbourne ultra-marathon in record time at the age of 61.

"Smart, hilarious, unique-- just terrific." --Anne LamottA thoughtful, witty memoir from the author of How to Be a Person in the World and the popular advice column, Ask Polly. When Heather Havrilesky was a kid during the '70s, harrowing disaster films dominated every movie screen with earthquakes that destroyed huge cities, airplanes that plummeted towards the ground and giant sharks that ripped teenagers to shreds. Between her parents' dramatic clashes and her older siblings' hazing, Heather's home life sometimes mirrored the chaos onscreen. Disaster Preparedness charts how the most humiliating and painful moments in Havrilesky's past forced her to develop a wide range of defense mechanisms, some adaptive, some piteously ill-suited to modern life. From premature boxing lessons to the competitive grooming of cheerleading camp, from her parents' divorce to her father's sudden death, Havrilesky explores a path from innocence and optimism to self-protection and caution, bravely reexamining the injuries that shaped her, the lessons that sunk in along the way, and the insights that carried her through. Disaster Preparedness is a road map to the personal disasters we all face from an irresistible voice that gets straight to the beauty and grace at the heart of every calamity.

Osmar E.
