In a life filled with the elation, exhilaration and animated exultation located at a paradise called mania... to the dejection, despair, and desolation of the hopelessness of depression ... but in the end mostly spent in the aftermath of normality and having to deal with reality... I remain always steadily cautious, for with great unannounced swiftness, I may be called upon to answer the torment and anguish of every emotion you can conjure betwixt up and down. The unfortunate and shattered relationships now crippled in the wake of my experiences are too many to count. Regrets I have many! But I know I am not alone in my tribulations. In these purposeful, selected retellings of a journey to finding balance, it is my hope that you find similarities to compliment or maybe enhance your experiences, and help you make sense of your own journey. It will also, in stages, fittingly break to take you inside the complex mind of a bipolar. But, an early cautionary heed, it can be playfully whimsical at stages, bold and brightly humoured at others, to profoundly philosophical, then savagely scary and even scaringly depressive in episodic peaks. No matter how this is externally viewed, in those interludes, the feelings and experiences are very real to me. I humbly prostrate my story before you in the desire that it may provide some guidance in making sense of the eccentricities of a bipolar life, or perhaps as we are all woven from the same ancient cloth, simply, life!

Behind Blue Eyes opens a window into a journey not just through time, but through the tapestry of life itself. Where do the threads of our stories begin? Perhaps a few years back in the blush of youth, or maybe in a distant decade, or even another century. This book isn't just a story; it's a revelation, an uncovering of beginnings and the surprising events that follow. Life, in its essence, is an unpredictable journey. We traverse its path without a map, uncertain of its duration, the people we'll meet, or the destinations we'll reach. Often, life cloaks itself in a veil of predictability, devoid of excitement and adventure. But as Behind Blue Eyes shows, beneath the surface lies a world brimming with unforeseen twists, exhilarating excitement, and adventures that exceed our wildest dreams - sometimes more than we might wish for. Yet, beneath all this is the poignant reminder that life is as fragile as it is fleeting. The unknown timeline of our existence adds a delicate urgency to every moment. Join us on this extraordinary real-life adventure, where the unimaginable becomes reality, the unbelievable is commonplace, and the astonishing is just part of the norm. Behind Blue Eyes invites you to embrace the rollercoaster of life, with all its highs and lows, in a narrative that promises to both surprise and deeply move you.

Life Blood, written by a renowned leukaemia physician, tells unforgettable stories of his leukaemia patients' battles to be cured but also uniquely describes the stresses that doctors face when looking after extremely ill young people during an extraordinary time in their lives. In reflecting on his long and illustrious career, Professor Marks' memoir offers frank descriptions of his own medical family, some personal experiences of ill-health and his relationships with colleagues and patients in the NHS. Partly written during the Covid pandemic and as he approached retirement, Life Blood offers highly informed and compassionate views on modern medicine, from a pivotal point in both the author's own professional life and the history of healthcare. Uniquely, through these real-life stories, we enter the world of the leukaemia patient, to understand what it is like to be diagnosed and treated for a life-threatening yet frequently curable cancer. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia or ALL was the first cancer to be consistently cured in children and is a model for much of modern cancer therapy given that more than half of us will develop cancer in our lifetime. Looking to the future we read of Nitya, whose treatment-refractory leukaemia was cured by CAR T cells, a modern immunotherapy using genetically modified white blood cells, which is now being adapted to treat breast, lung and colon cancer.

Forced Circumstances tells the story of a young 22-year old British woman living in 1960s Iran, bringing together a fragmented family amidst the turmoil of the Shah's rule. Married to an Iranian man with two children from a previous marriage, our bold protagonist takes on the complex role of stepmother to kids unaccustomed to affection or stability. Navigating traditions requiring full body coverings and forbidding women to venture out alone, she faces intense challenges as a conspicuous foreigner subject to contempt and harassment. Did she quietly harbour regrets over tying her fate to such complications instead of a more comfortable English life? Would the eruption of Ayatollah Khomeini and Iran's Islamic Revolution provide the leverage needed to hold their Jewish family together? Or drive them further toward resentment and dysfunction in a now-perilous homeland? Relating this family's ambitions, sacrifices, and conflicts across clashing societal upheavals, the memoir serves up lessons in perseverance and perspective. It illuminates the timeless experiences that unfold when different cultures combine under a single roof - and what it truly takes to transform that awkward juxtaposition into a nurturing sense of home.

Born into a turbulent household in Derbyshire/Greater Manchester, my life has been an unsettling journey, oscillating between fleeting moments of happiness and overwhelming darkness. My story is a candid reflection on a childhood marred by neglect and abuse, offset by brief but significant periods of solace. Misunderstanding often breeds fear, which in turn evokes either anger or pity from others. But life has taught me that with a glimmer of hope, survival is possible, even against all odds. Now, as I reach a juncture in my life where it's time to let go of past burdens, I pen down my experiences with the aspiration that my story may offer solace, guidance, or perhaps even a warning, to others walking a similar path. You can walk away from a hostile past and into the bright oasis of the future!

"Will make many readers smile with recognition."-The New Yorker "Readaholics, meet your new best friend."-People "This book is bliss."-The Boston Globe Sometimes subtle, sometimes striking, the interplay between our lives and our books is the subject of this unique memoir by well-known publishing correspondent and self-described "readaholic" Sara Nelson. The project began as an experiment with a simple plan-fifty-two weeks, fifty-two books-that fell apart in the first week. It was then that Sara realized the books chose her as much as she chose them, and the rewards and frustrations they brought were nothing she could plan for. From Solzhenitsyn to Laura Zigman, Catherine M. to Captain Underpants, the result is a personal chronicle of insight, wit, and enough infectious enthusiasm to make a passionate reader out of anybody.

The world has defined an established system of "right" decisions and actions that will lead to success, and who doesn't want success? And, for people-pleasers, following this system creates opportunities for external validation, something we crave deep in our souls. But always doing the "right" things, as defined by others, has a way of burying our true passions under layers of expectations and "shoulds." A tension is created. We can do the right things and receive validation, or do the unright things which lean into our passions but risk upsetting people in our lives.Steve Fredlund is a life-long people pleaser who developed a deep internal dependence on external validation. But even after discovering this, he spent decades continuing to do what made other people happy, unwilling to take the steps needed to define and live the life he truly wanted. Now, at the age of fifty-three, Steve knows what it takes to do the unright thing, to follow his passions, and to not let his need for validation pull him back into a life focused on meeting the expectations of others.
