Im März 1965 begegneten sich die Schriftstellerin Brigitte Reimann und der Schriftsteller Günter de Bruyn zum ersten Mal. In Reimanns Tagebuch findet sich dazu die Notiz: »Lernte Günter de Bruyn kennen, der mir einen vorzüglichen Eindruck machte.« Wie es danach weiterging, davon war bislang nur aus den Aufzeichnungen der Schriftstellerin zu erfahren: Es gab zufällige wie geplante Treffen, und die beiden schrieben sich hin und wieder Briefe.Günter de Bruyn hat weder in seinen autobiografischen Texten noch in anderer Weise diese Bekanntschaft jemals öffentlich erwähnt. In seinem Nachlass fanden sich jedoch Briefe an Brigitte Reimann und sie betreffende Tagebucheintragungen - Dokumente eines intensiven Austausches unter Kollegen, in denen Persönliches ebenso thematisiert wurde wie Probleme bei Verbandstreffen und Schriftstellerkongressen. Im Zentrum aber standen die literarische Produktivität des jeweils anderen sowie eine respektvolle Anteilnahme füreinander.Mit der Publikation werden erstmals sämtliche bislang aufgefundenen Briefe und Postkarten zwischen Brigitte Reimannund Günter de Bruyn veröffentlicht und von Carola Wiemers literatur- und zeithistorisch verortet.

Sie waren einander eng verbunden: die Bodes aus Braunschweig, die auf eine lange Ahnenreihe namhafter Gelehrter zurückblicken konnten, und die Rimpaus, innovative Landwirte mit Rittergütern in der Nähe von Halberstadt. Aber auch wenn es schien, als seien die beiden von Kindesbeinen an füreinander bestimmt gewesen, hat es lange gedauert, bis der aufstrebende Kunsthistoriker Wilhelm Bode (1845-1929), der zum Generaldirektor der Berliner Museen avancieren sollte (und 1914 geadelt wurde), und seine Cousine Marie Rimpau (1845-1885) einander das Jawort gaben. Denn der Widerstand der Familien gegen diese Verwandtenehe war groß.Birgit Jochens gibt anhand der überwiegend bisher unveröffentlichten Briefe und Familienchroniken von Wilhelm Bode und Marie Rimpau einen Einblick in die Lebenswelt großbürgerlicher Milieus in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Im Briefwechsel gerät der weniger bekannte, der private Wilhelm Bode in den Blick. Wenn auch von der Museumsarbeit besessen, erweist er sich darin als liebenswürdiger, mit Humor und Selbstironie begabter Familienmensch, der mit seinerproblematischen Befindlichkeit - mit Krankheit, überbordendem Selbstbewusstsein und Streitsucht - zu ringen hatte. DieBriefe Marie Rimpaus wiederum machen mit einer starken Frau bekannt, die im Zusammenleben mit ihrem »Bodo« undin der Teilhabe an seiner Arbeit Erfüllung fand.
