  • von Mamang Dai
    33,00 €

'A major voice in Indian English literature, and literature from North EastIndia...[Her] poems are like a race of butterflies bargaining with the night.'-Keki Daruwalla'Dai's poetic world is one of river, forest and mountain, a limpid and lyricalreflection of the terrain of her home state. Nature here is mysterious, verdant with myth, dense with sacred memory. There is magic to be foundeverywhere...But as you read closer, you [also] sense a more sinister undertow:this paradisiacal landscape is also one of "guns and gulls", punctuated by "thefootfall of soldiers". You also realize that the simplicity of Dai's verse is notwithout guile. It possesses a gentle persuasive riverine tug that can lead you tomoments of heart-stopping surprise.'For all its simplicity, Dai's poetry does not arrive at easy conclusions. There isno dishonest sense of anchor here, no blissful pastoral idyll. The poet describesher people as "foragers for a destiny" and her work is pervaded by a deepunease about erased histories and an uncertain future. And yet, implicit in herpoetics is the refusal to divorce protest from love. This seems to translate into acommitment to a poetry of quiet surges and eddies rather than gritty texturesand edges...[and] a tone that is hushed, wondering, thoughtful, reflective. Thestrength of this poetry is its unforced beauty and clarity, its ability to steer clearof easy flamboyance.'-Arundhathi Subramaniam

  • von Patrick A de Werk

Through My Father's Eyes is a book of poems by Patrick de Werk, mostly written from the standpoint of his father. The poems touch on life experiences, some which were very difficult to vocalize, such as growing up during WWII in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The poem writing started out with a poem "Dad" which describes a near fatal car accident, and the father coming home to say "I love you" for the first time his son has ever heard it. From the writing of that poem, Patrick realized that his father was able to open up more, and as he spoke to his father about life, he grasped small bits of information and wrote. This opened up a dialog between the two, and as they grew closer, Patrick's father was able to open up more and more, which resulted in more poetry. This books has many of the poems that touched his father's heart, brought back painful memories as well as joy and laughter. This collection not only opened up communication, but was also a way that his father could finally let go of the past.

First and foremost, I give thanks to God for allowing me to aid in perhaps making our world alittle more loving. God inspires me to write from my heart and, through him, let everyone knowhow much we are all loved. Sometimes negativity can be all around us, but with our faith andtrusting in God's word, I believe positivity will overrule. May we all be blessed and more so,may we all be inspired.

Preface to the Companion On completion of the "Ballad of Calypso" I felt compelled to bring out the poetic outline, allowing it to stand alone and relate this adventure to that audience who enjoy the music embedded in rhyming poetry. There are no instruments, however, the foot may begin tapping or the body rocking as the reader follows the story. As mentioned, this is an outline. It will carry the reader through the entire journey, quickly and smoothly. Where it lacks in prosaic details found in the book, it is filled with the music which the prose interrupts. This is Calypso's log book and the rhyme in "Rhyme of the Modern Mariner". The reader may gain insight into the mind of the mariner living on the fringe on land, and at sea for months in the Doldrums, the Trade Winds and the stormy North Pacific Equinox. This is a ballad which allows the writer to tell a true story in terms that are more like painting a picture, than using the written word to convey an image to the reader. One hopes the reader will get the feel of being at the helm of a small sailboat negotiating the twists and turns, bridges and inlets, of the Intra Coastal Waterway. Negotiate the treacherous reefs of the Caribbean and feel the boat ride big waves and climb the rigging in a heavy seaway. Meet the critters who joined Calypso on her ninety-seven day journey from Panama to Hawaii. The trials and tribulations of a couple in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a sinking wooden boat. It's all here, an invitation to take a chance and "go for it" at least once in a lifetime. DMc

Full of brilliant rhythmic immediacy and syntactical arcs, as Ann Lauterbach puts it, these poems are as strikingly clear as they are surprising in their movements. Grounded in a close reading of the mundane and the memorable, they present an easy-going wisdom that sneaks up on you like a wave or a recollection or an unexpected insight. Play Lucretius is, in Charles North's words, an imaginative, inspiring book.

  • von Valery Oisteanu
    35,00 €

Streaming straight out of the Surrealist matrix, Valery Oisteanu's poetry takes us back to the movement's origins and simultaneously propels us forward, giving us the energy and values of what Breton-Péret-Desnos et al. synthesized while "making it new" for our day. These poems are powerful, thrilling, wise, and politically right on target.

When my husband and I first moved in together, we struggled to find harmony. I am a 100% pure chaotic raccoon and he is retired military. So as you can imagine, he felt overwhelmed by my clutter and I felt disappointed not being able to live up to his standards of cleanliness. After one of our sillier fights, we sat down and decided we needed to figure this out because we love each other too much to give up. I would like to say I did better at picking things up...but honestly...he just got more open to accepting my mess. At the time, I was in law school and working two jobs. There were a lot of things that passed me by that should have mattered more...but I was already stretched thin. I remember telling my husband that I was afraid he would get tired of me and move on with his life. However, he showed me each day that he was planning to stick around. He would pack my lunch every morning before I left and in it I would find a sticky note. And I would respond with a note hidden around his things. For a full year, he wrote me a note each day...even on the weekends. This book is inspired by the gift he gave me-unconditional and limitless love. Don't let movies fool you. Love is not a grand gesture. Love is a sticky note repeated each day. It is a poem, a safe space, and constant work. Love is the decision to appreciate what you have and the willingness to expand who you are to create space for this other person. This book is to all those who have loved, are in love, and want to fall in love. It is to my husband-inspired by the nest of sticky notes I have accumulated from him.

Love, loss, passion, anxiety, longing, surrender. All words to describe the contents, but not the emotion you feel in the reading. You'll want to shake her, and cuddle her close, explore galaxies with her, and steal kisses. Sit on her shoulder and peak into what's made her who she is. Will she be your Beloved, or will she hold you at arm's length? She might even pull you under. ¿Jess Isted strings up hearts as bunting and dances on the page, appreciating love for its lessons even through loss and allowing longing to linger. What¿s more, each title is a poem before the poem. This beautiful collection masters reminisces, cherishes endings and makes way for self discovery.¿Jemima Hughes"Having seen Jessica perform her poetry live multiple times, I'm elated that this written collection now exists.Jessica has a remarkable way with words. Whilst some of her poems will raise a smile, others have the ability to conjure deep self-reflection about life, love and relationships. She is my favourite poet on the local scene and I'd recommend her work to anyone."Matt Carson

  • von Christiaan Germonpré
    37,00 €
