  • von Homer
    39,00 €

Odyssey is perhaps the greatest adventure story ever told, but it is more even than that. It is the story of a man's homecoming, the story of a yearning for hearth and home, for the familiar and native. It is also a story of burning revenge, of a man's desire to visit retribution on those who have despoiled his patrimony. Odyssey is not the story of an everyman, but a king, and it serves as a moral example to us all.In the introduction to this companion to Homer's Iliad, Taerus Atellus approaches the text with a poet's eye, focusing on the aesthetic and poetical dimensions of Homer's masterwork. With facing Greek text and the renowned translation by poet W. C. Bryant, this is the last edition of Odyssey you will ever need to own.

  • von John Doyle
    21,00 €

"A Word in Your Fear introduces me to a new voice, epiphanies striking, stun and collide, in sparks, language, thick. But without clutter. Doyle's poetry is funny, philosophical, sometimes satirical. It professes an awareness on manifold levels: surreal in some places, grounded in others. It's a magical book, a demanding book: a decision to filter experience and somehow embrace. The challenge? To pull from the wreckage & desperation of a struggling world an "who gives a damn" construct, the engagement a child has kicking a ball amidst graffiti stained walls and rubble. Echoing ancestors of Celtic voice, fresh, I hearmuch of what poetry needs to continue amongst what still reverberates, not the undead zombie, but the awake and alive. A word in our fear. How to dance and in dancing outrage the world as it stares, amazed."-C. Leigh Srygley, Author of Parking Lot Poems (Luchador Press)"A Word in Your Fear by John Doyle is a stunning collection of poetry by one of Ireland's leading contemporary poets. These poems, reflect the poet's experience of life and society in America and Ireland. They are sublime observations in real time that look back and still "stiff" us today. Like Kerouac, Doyle narrates his own road of adventure and discovery. His poetic prose draws the reader into each poem on his epic journey. This brilliant collection highlights a unique style, vision and sophisticated technique. The serious undertones are truths made more memorable by hilarious humour and scathing satire in beautiful prose that brings to mind Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut."-Strider Marcus Jones, Author of "Inside Out"¿"John Doyle remakes the world we see with its parameters, received wisdom, and brutal expectations into a world of ancient, shared archetypes, and not so ancient archetypes like Dennis Wilson surfing around Roger Christian poetry like the new Odysseus. The muse sings out from Irish freight trains going by, and the Jim Rockford coastline where California meets the Irish Sea." -John Harold Olson, Author of "FDR and The Flying Saucers"

  • von Abdellatif Laabi
    31,00 €

Abdellatif Laâbi is an internationally renowned poet and activist famous for his support of Arab liberation and unity. He has received numerous prestigious accolades, and his work has been translated into Arabic, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, and English. His poetry has been central to post-colonial Moroccan literature and important to the development of Arabic literature generally. In the 1970s Laâbi served an eight-year prison sentence in Morocco for "crimes of opinion" against the Moroccan state after he helped found Souffles-Anfas (Breaths), a central journal in the growing movement of post-colonial Arab literature during the 1960s. Since the 1980s Laâbi has lived in France in forced exile. Laâbi's poems in The Symphony of Resistance address themes of human rights, the history of oppression in colonized countries, globalization, freedom, love, the Arab world after liberation, and the role of the poet. Given events pertaining to and resulting from the Arab Spring, this collection will appeal to readers interested in contemporary poetry, both in academia (students and scholars of North African literature, Middle East Studies, Francophone Studies, etc.) and beyond. The timely questions also have special resonance in the current American context, especially as concerns diversity and social justice.

Drawing from his experiences as a freelance journalist covering European affairs, the author reworks textual sources to offer revealing glimpses into the latent political machinery underlying our discourse. The poems serve as a testimony and reappropriation of language, providing a unique perspective on a continent wrestling with agency. This collection unveils the complexities of European experience, resonating with the challenges of the contemporary political landscape.Praise for the Author and WorkImplausibly yet necessarily, enditem. shimmers with what could be called a 'poetics of logistics,' re-arranging and recasting the bureaucratic language of distribution and circulation into a language of transcultural revolution. Jeremy Allan Hawkins presents a portrait of 'the European project' that reveals the hypocrisy behind borders closed to bodies but open to markets, as well as tracks the role Global English plays in both distorting and codifying lived, local experience. However, Hawkins also shows us that ambivalence and malleability are written into the language, such that 'end item' becomes enditem., less a finalized product for sale than the poetic imperative to keep connecting, configuring, and mobilizing.- Mia You, author of I, Too, Dislike It (1913 Press, 2016) Jeremy Allan Hawkins's collection enditem. employs collage to juxtapose pieces of current events - war, entertainment, commerce, geopolitical haggling and its human cost - against one another. Built with the language of news articles, Hawkins crafts a sharp portrait of our lived moment, vibrating with the 'uncertainties that persist,' and 'political catastrophic stupidity' of global proportions. This project emphasizes the schism between our felt and lived realities, amid the ongoing violence of wars, displaced communities, destruction. Readers will find themselves entranced with the language we are fed, only to have it reveal itself as poem, riddle, and ouroboros.- Avni Vyas, author of Little God (Burrow Press, 2021)

The Journey Continues... BECOMING UNTIL is Marjorie J. Levine's latest collection of poetry and is a bookend to her critically acclaimed debut poetry book, ROAD TRIPS. The bends in the road as life advances become mercurial passages and the moment comes when a life lived as one young with limitless possibilities becomes, just like that, an existence that settles into an almost tapered old age with many decades that recede into a personal past. In this collection of poems, the author creates a vision of her autumn years as defined by a time when she has been left behind but is slowly evolving and becoming until the time she joins again all the many in her journey who have fallen away. The anthology is structured into three distinct sections: HAIKUS, STREET POEMS, and MAGICAL THINKING, and culminates with her concluding piece, THE BEND IN THE HIGHWAY. A SIDE GLANCE Yesterday is still Inside me like a new view I hold on tightly.

"Who are you men, armoured in mail, who come sailing upon the sliding sea-road to the land of Britannia? Long have I held the sea-watch in season as the king's coast-warden, that no pirates might pillage the people of Vortigern. Never have I seen a noble more mighty or more haughty!" This is how the British coast-warden greets Hengest, the first named Anglo-Saxon to come to Britain. After the failure of the Finnesburh mission, King Hoc exiled Hengest, and he set sail with three ships and three hundred men in the hope of serving King Vortigern as a mercenary. The story that follows is as exciting as the story of Beowulf. It includes several battles, a femme fatale (Hengest's daughter, Rowena), and characters from the Arthurian legend, including Merlin and Uther. It also includes a battle between dragons, a contest between wizards, and a clash of faiths. This reconstruction of the lost Saga of Hengest is told in a modern version of the Anglo-Saxon alliterative line and is closely based on original sources, extracts from which are given at the end of the book along with detailed notes and a bibliography.
