Tangled in Vow & Beseech vows to remember what we lose and beseeches us to embrace every moment. Throughout, McCabe Johnson writes intimately about family, nature, and animals, while also protesting the violences of religion, patriarchy, and racism. The lyricism of these poems carries the speaker into the "clear slipstream of memory" to "river me home. River me home."-Craig Santos Perez, author of from incorporated territory [åmot], winner of the National Book Award for PoetryThrough an array of poetic forms, Jill McCabe Johnson explores a deep sense of interconnectedness. These lyric tangles help us grapple with a life where the ugliest abuses of person and planet occur alongside a mother's love for her son, the grace of childhood innocence, the anniversary of a first kiss, and the understanding that "in this land" of "dogwood blossom, swordfern and fen" is "everything" we need to "believe." -Derek Sheffield, author of Not for Luck, co-editor of Cascadia Field Guide: Art, Ecology, Poetry, and Poetry Editor of Terrain.org

The musically gifted Lilia finds love with an Italian self-made man, but things are not always as they appear.___________"Magical. With intelligent and graceful prose reminiscent of Alice Hoffman, Roxanne Z. Kind emerges as a female voice worthy of our attention. Her characters come to life so vividly and fiercely. Yet, Ms. Kind takes you by the hand and lovingly walks you through this tale of three disparate women, who, once upon time, touched and changed one another's small lives forever."-Sara Wood, Actor/Director/Producer/Founder of Actors Space West"Roxanne Z. Kind's A Small Life had me enthralled from the very first paragraph. It is a magically beautiful recounting of her family lore, drawn with nuances that, imagined or otherwise, seem both real and mystical. When John, a self-destructive nihilist, wakes up in a well alongside two fading men, one thing becomes clear: escape, or die trying._______________________________________¿¿¿John awakes in a nightmare situation. Not knowing why, he's been trapped inside a pit of darkness with two dying men. His only connection to the outside world is their psychotic captor who gazes down on them in what they call, "The Fishbowl." The other men keep John alive for one reason: He is their only hope for escape. DEAR JOHN goes beyond your standard escape story as it explores love in all its possible forms, from the most wholesome to the most twisted. Through a series of flashbacks that cap off every chapter, we take our nihilistic, self-destructive main character and slowly bring him back to a time in his life when everything was perfect, in stark contrast with his "now," which is falling apart in the most deadly of ways. It does this with a dark sense of humor and character development that one may not expect from a book of this type.C/W: Death, murder, torture (mostly starvation), emotional manipulation, references to male rape (not on screen), Stockholm syndrome, bitter ending in book one to be resolved in book two.

We had tasted of Spain before ever we had crossed her frontiers. Indeed, perhaps Spain is the easiest country to obtain samples from without the fatigue of travelling. The Spaniard carries his atmosphere with him: wherever he goes he re-creates in his immediate surroundings more than a hint of his national existence. The Englishman abroad may be English¿more brutally and uncompromisingly English than the Spaniard is Spanish¿yet he does not carry England with him. He does not, that is, recreate England to the extent of making her seem quite real abroad; there she appears alien, remote, somewhat out of place. So, too, neither the Russian, the German, the Dane, the Portuguese, the Italian, nor the American can carry with him the flavour of his homeland in an essence sufficiently concentrated to withstand the insidious infiltration of a foreign atmosphere. To some extent the Scandinavian countries, Norway and Sweden, have this power; but Spain is thus gifted in the greatest measure. These three countries seem to possess a national unconsciousness which fends them off from too close a contact with lands which are foreign to them; perhaps one might almost accuse them of a lack of sensitiveness in certain aspects....
