Maria Theresa of Austria was, with Frederick the Great, certainly one of the most important figures in European history. In this paper, I will essentially only discuss the very first period in which the Austrian imperial army was, in the proper sense, 'Theresian', i.e. from 1740 until the end of the 'Eight Years' War', i.e. 1748. A particularly tragic aspect of that period was that a woman, Maria Theresa, originally certainly unaccustomed to anything when it came to the business of warfare, was forced by extraordinary circumstances to treasure her father's inheritance on her own. As time went by, however, she became so attached to her army that, after her husband's death, when she handed over the military 'keys' to her son, she said: "This branch of state administration was the only one in which I was really interested." All other topics and the bibliography will be completed in the second volume.

Auch Kriegsgefangene und KZ-Häftlinge mussten dort unter Tage arbeiten.Der Recherche zum Lager Tiefenort steht eine außerordentliche Quelle zur Verfügung: 1937 bis 1945 schrieb der Onkel des Autors, Kurt Neumaier, regelmäßig Briefe an seine ebenfalls "halbjüdische" Frau Gretl, die zeitgleich bei den Münchner Stadtwerken zwangsverpflichtet worden war.Die täglichen Briefe aus dem Arbeitslager schildern tagebuchähnlich die vorherrschende Gemütsverfassung, das Lagerleben, die Arbeitsbedingungen und die Freundschaften der Münchner Häftlinge. Über die Beschreibung der Lagerhaft hinaus wirft die Korrespondenz ein erstaunliches und beklemmendes Licht auf das Alltagsleben eines rassistisch Verfolgten in diesen Jahren. It explores how conflict altered the relationship between the civilian and state, and how this shift created unique opportunities for civilians to behave heroically and be framed as heroic. From acts of life-risking bravery to displays of endurance, this book explores how constructions of Home Front heroism were flexible and malleable, and directly linked to the impact of war. Through exploring the spatial, material, corporeal and ritualistic dimensions of heroic representations, this book offers the first comprehensive study of Home Front heroism. Through a focus on London, it explores how heroism was manufactured through the way that civilians occupied spaces of production and danger, through the use of uniforms and gallantry medals, and in the way that civilians were wounded and killed during periods of bombardment.
