Walter Blasi legt nach seinen erfolgreichen Büchern über den Steyr-Puch Haflinger und den Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer ein neues Buch vor, dassich dem Steyr 680 widmet.Dieser Lastkraftwagen war seit dem Ende der 1960er-Jahre das Rückgrat der Personen- und Materialbeförderung im Bundesheer. Sein hauptsächlicher Verwendungszweck war der Transport von Versorgungsgütern und der Mannschaftstransport. Er bot Platz für einen Fahrer und 19 Passagiere. Die Bundesheerausführungen des Steyr 680 entstanden nicht wie der Haflinger und Pinzgauer am Reißbrett, sondern beruhten auf verschiedenen zivilen Varianten, aus denen der Militär-Lkw für die Bedürfnisse der österreichischen Streitkräfte entwickelt wurde. Die neue militärische Baureihe sollte die vorhandenen leistungsschwachen Steyr 580 g ablösen.Im Wesentlichen unterscheidet man beim 680er zwei Ausführungen, eine zweiachsige und eine dreiachsige. Zunächst wurde nur eine zweiachsige Version erprobt, wobei im Vergleich zum amerikanischen dreiachsigen GMC klar wurde, dass es auch vom Steyr-Lkw eine Ausführung mit drei Achsen geben musste. Im Lauf seiner Dienstzeit - genauer gesagt hatte er dazu fast 40 Jahre Zeit - sollte sich der 680er neben dem Haflinger und dem Pinzgauer als das wohl bekannteste Militärfahrzeug Österreichs etablieren, mit dem jeder im Bundesheer - egal ob als Aktiver oder Reservist, als Offizier, Unteroffizier, Charge beziehungsweise Wehrmann - seine Bekanntschaft machen musste.Der Autor:Prof. Dr. Walter Blasi, 1954 in Wien geboren, war von 1974 bis 2003 als Beamter im Bundesministerium für Landesverteidigung tätig. Im Jahr 2000 schloss er sein Studium der Geschichte mit Promotion ab, von 2003 bis 2006 war er Referent im Österreichischen Staatsarchiv und von 2006 bis 2016 im Bundesministerium für Inneres beschäftigt. Er ist Autor zahlreicher Bücher und Aufsätze zur österreichischen Verkehrs- und Militärgeschichte.In der Edition Winkler-Hermaden sind von ihm bereits erschienen: "Die k. u. k. 1918 entstand parallel zur Bildung eines großen rumänischen Staates die Rumänische orthodoxe Kirche durch den Zusammenschluss der Regionalkirchen des rumänischen Altreichs, Siebenbürgens, der Bukowina und Bessarabiens. In August 1964 Australia deployed six Caribou aircraft and 76 personnel to Vung Tau, South Vietnam, as the new unit, RAAF Transport Flight Vietnam (RTFV). In mid-1966 the unit was renamed No. 35 Squadron and remained in South Vietnam until February 1972. This small team of aircraft and support personnel marked the first deployment of an RAAF unit on operations since the Korean War and the first war in which Australians did not fight alongside British. With only six aircraft, Wallaby Airlines, as the unit's operation became known, notched up impressive statistics over its eight years of existence - 80,000 sorties flying 47,000 hours and carrying over 40 million kilograms of cargo. RTFV was led for the first nine months by Squadron Leader Chris Sugden, DFC and Bar, a veteran of both the Second World War and the Korean War. Suggy was a generation older than most of the members of his unit and so became a defacto father figure to most of them. There is also no doubt he was looked up to by all and that he enjoyed the highest respect of every member of his unit, aircrew ground crew and support personnel, as well as the many United States and South Vietnamese personnel who came into contact with him. This is the story, untold to date, of these first 76 members of RTFV, of Suggy and his men, how the unit came into being, and of the first nine months of its existence - a period of operations which in some ways was quite different to those of the remaining seven years the unit was deployed in South Vietnam.

Heaven High, Hell Deep, 1917-1918, first published in 1935, is author Norman Archibald's account of his experiences as an aviator in World War One. Archibald (1894-1975) joined the fledgling U.S. Army Air Service in the spring of 1917, underwent flight training in the U.S. and France, and began his hazardous patrol and combat duty in the skies against the Germans. Unfortunately, after several months at the front, Archibald's plane was hit by shrapnel and he was forced to crash-land behind enemy lines. His story continues with his imprisonment and deprivations as a prisoner-of-war until the war's end and his journey to freedom in Switzerland and France.

Die Ukraine kämpft aktuell um ihre 1991 erlangte Unabhängigkeit, China wiederum stellt die Unabhängigkeit Taiwans infrage und ob Bosnien-Herzegowina als Staat langfristig existieren wird, ist durchaus fraglich. All dies sind Konflikte, die aufgrund des Unabhängigkeitswillen von Nationen bzw. ethnischer Gruppen ein zentrales politisches Problem unserer Zeit darstellen. So hat sich seit Gründung der UNO 1945 die Zahl ihrer Mitgliedstaaten nahezu vervierfacht - ein Umstand, der einen Trend zur Fragmentierung der Staatenwelt zu belegen scheint. Dabei ist nicht nur die territoriale Integrität autoritär beherrschter Staaten, die Teilen ihrer Bevölkerung (oft nationale Minderheiten) ­grundlegende Menschen- oder Bürgerrechte vorenthalten, durch separatistische Gruppen und deren Sezessionsbestrebungen bedroht. Vielmehr ­sehen sich damit auch demokratische, westlich geprägte Rechtsstaaten wie Kanada, Großbritannien, Spanien, Italien, Frankreich oder Belgien konfrontiert. Erinnert sei hier nur an die Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen Kataloniens oder an Anschläge korsischer Separatisten. Letztlich finden sich in allen Teilen der Erde Staaten, die sich auf ihrem Territorium mit separatistischen Strömungen auseinandersetzen müssen. Das Streben nach Sezession stellt somit, wenig verwunderlich, einen Hauptgrund für kriegerische Konflikte dar.Martin Grosch möchte daher mit seinem Buch einen Beitrag leisten, den Blick vor allem für derzeitige Sezessionsbestrebungen - gerade auch in Europa - und die damit einhergehenden Folgen zu schärfen. Dabei zeichnet er die kulturellen, historischen sowie geografischen Hintergründe früherer und aktueller Separatismusbestrebungen nach. Der Blick auf das NS-Regime wird heute fokussiert auf die >rassische< Verfolgung. Dabei wird der antifaschistische Widerstand, den Frauen und Männer oftmals unter Einsatz ihres Lebens leisteten, zunehmend übersehen. In der bundesdeutschen Geschichtsschreibung gedachte man lange Zeit vor allem der Wehrmachtsoffiziere des 20. Juli oder des studentischen Widerstands um die >Weiße Rose

Berta ist 17, als sie sich einen >Bubikopf< schneiden lässt - gegen den Willen ihrer Mutter. Dass sie auch noch Mitglied der Sozialistischen Arbeiterjugend wird, führt zu Gegenwind, der ihre Politisierung in der Weimarer Republik jedoch noch bestärkt. Berta Backof (1911-2001) protestiert gegen die Aufrüstung der deutschen Marine, bald tritt sie in die Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei (SAP) ein. Als die Nazis an die Macht kommen, folgt der Schritt in die Illegalität, sie wird - inzwischen in der KPD - Teil des Widerstands. Der Band stützt sich auf zwei ausführliche Interviews, in denen Berta Backof ihre Lebensgeschichte erzählt. Sie schildert ausgefochtene Kämpfe, ihre Verhaftung durch die Nazis oder, für die Zeit nach 1945, ihre Arbeit als kommunistische Funktionärin in einer männlich geprägten Organisation. Auch jenseits der Partei bleibt sie ihr Leben lang politisch bewusst. Noch in den 1990er Jahren läuft sie an der Spitze der 1.-Mai-Demonstration in Nürnberg. Historisch eingebettet, ergibt sich ein lebendiges Bild der Arbeiter:innen- wie auch der Nürnberg-Fürther Lokalgeschichte von den 1920er Jahren bis in die Nachkriegszeit - das Porträt einer Frau, deren Leben über den Tag hinausweist.

Die hier porträtierten Frauen kamen aus mehr als zwanzig europäischen Ländern, aus dem faschistischen Deutschland, aus besetzten und nicht besetzten Regionen. Allesamt widersetzten sie sich der Terrorherrschaft des deutschen ­Faschismus und dem in weiten Teilen des Kontinents tobenden Krieg. Sie beteiligten sich an verschiedensten Aktionen des antifaschistischen Widerstands, auch transnational, übernahmen Verantwortung und waren immer wieder auch unter Waffen im Einsatz. Sie kämpften für Freiheit, Frieden, Menschenwürde und Solidarität, sie riskierten ihr Leben - und trugen zur Befreiung bei. Dabei emanzipierten sich viele auch von traditionellen Geschlechterrollen. Noch immer sind viel zu viele Widerstandskämpferinnen unsichtbar. Anknüpfend an den Band »Mit Mut und List« werden rund 80 weitere Frauen vorgestellt. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Journalistinnen aus ganz Europa tragen dazu bei, ihnen ein Gesicht zu geben und ihre Geschichte zu erzählen, dem Vergessen ein lebendiges Erbe entgegenzusetzen. Diese Frauen ­machen Mut für das heutige Auftreten gegen Neofaschismus, Rechtspopulismus, Rassismus, Sexismus und Krieg.

1925 geboren, aufgewachsen im »Herz der Finsternis« (Joseph Conrad), entkam er der Provinz und stieg auf zum ersten frei gewählten Premier des Kongo - Patrice Émery Lumumba. Er versuchte das Unmögliche, als er sein Land vom belgischen Kolonialsystem unabhängig machen und aus der kolonialen Umklammerung lösen wollte. Eine Treibjagd westlicher Geheimdienste folgte und endete am 17. Januar 1961 tragisch in Kongo-Katanga: Mit der Ermordung des charismatischen Redners, Denkers und erklärten Pan­afrikaners war ein Epochenwechsel hin zu einem vereinten, freien Afrika vorerst gescheitert. Auch das geostrategisch bedeutende, rohstoffreiche Land am Kongo-Strom würde in neokolonialen Strukturen verharren. »Tot, hört Lumumba auf, Person zu sein, und wird das ganze Afrika, mit seinem Einigungswillen, der Vielfalt seiner sozialen und politischen Systeme, seinen Spaltungen, seinen Zwistigkeiten, seiner Kraft und seiner Machtlosigkeit.« (Jean-Paul Sartre) Diese erste deutschsprachige Biografie des Freiheitskämpfers ­Lumumba rekonstruiert zugleich die dramatischen Vorgänge im »afrikanischen Jahr« 1960.

Operation KE explores the air combat that attended the Japanese evacuation of Guadalcanal in early 1943a topic which has hitherto received very little attention. Operation KE was successful largely because Japanese strategic planning and tactical execution was basically sound. The traditional view holds that the Japanese got away with the initiative largely because the Americans let them; the U.S. Pacific high command felt it was not worth the effort to try and stop them. The authors contend that this was not entirely the case. They argue that the Cactus Air Force and Guadalcanal-based naval units did their best to disrupt the evacuation, still believing that the Tokyo Express was bringing reinforcements and supplies to the 17th Army. Other US forces in the South Pacific did make a half-hearted and questionably-executed attempt to stop the Japanese, but were bluffed into adopting a "e;wait-and-see"e; posture.Operation KE focuses on the air war fought between the Cactus and US 13th Air Forces on the one hand and the Japanese Navy and Army Air Forces on the other, from mid-December, 1942 to mid-February, 1943. The book scrutinizes the US air strikes against the six KE-related Tokyo Express destroyer runs, plus related air strikes against the Japanese merchant marine, as well as air and naval base-suppression missions undertaken by both sides, to determine what actually happened in order to analyze why the Japanese evacuation succeeded and why Cactus failed to stop it. Background chapters attempt to assess the respective states of readiness of the Japanese and US air arms in the South Pacific to support on the one hand and counter on the other the execution of Operation KE.The central portion of the book narrates in some detail what actually occurred in the air and at sea -- including air strikes, fighter sweeps, base suppression missions, and naval sorties -- during the crucial prelude to and the actual playing out of the interrelated events that comprised the evacuation operation. Concluding chapters analyze, on both strategic and tactical levels, the Japanese planning and execution of Operation KE, and Cactus' initiatives to interdict KE's successful prosecution. The authors conclude that both the Japanese and the American states of readiness on the eve of Operation KE suffered in such matters as optimizing both resources and operating procedures, and combating a hostile environment. Consequently, both combatants were somewhat handicapped in their abilities respectively to carry out and contest Operation KE.The author contends that the Japanese developed a reasonably sound strategy that exploited those methods and tools of war then in use in the South Pacific; to achieve success, they maximized their own strengths while taking advantage of their adversary's limitations. Contrary to the traditional view, the authors are of the opinion that Japanese utilization of their newly-built airstrip at Munda in the Central Solomons played an important role in the success of Operation KE, which was in keeping with the long-range intention of developing Munda and Vila airstrips as major forward airbases to defend against any Allied push toward Rabaul through the Solomons.The U.S., on the other hand, by consistently misreading Japanese intent regarding Operation KE and pursuing a cautious offensive strategy, blunted the tactical impact of their initiatives to counter the evacuation. Several imprudent tactical decisions and a misallocation of resources further diluted the strength of US efforts.

Brian Bohun Barlow's story Only One Child enlightens us about the WWII British children evacuees and educates us about the chaotic condition of Britain during the war. More than that, it touches our hearts with the tale of the generosity of two women-one who takes in four children and the other who gives the keeping of four of her children to someone who will foster their futures in America. Barlow's meticulous attention to detail and careful rendition of time and place make this a wonderful read for history buffs.

The Iraq War has been the costliest U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War. To date, few official studies have been conducted to review what happened, why it happened, and what lessons should be drawn. The U.S. Army in the Iraq War is the Army's initial operational level analysis of this conflict, written in narrative format, with assessments and lessons embedded throughout the work. This study reviews the conflict from a Landpower perspective and includes the contributions of coalition allies, the U.S. Marine Corps, and special operations forces. Presented principally from the point of view of the commanders in Baghdad, the narrative examines the interaction of the operational and strategic levels, as well as the creation of theater level strategy and its implementation at the tactical level. Volume 1 begins in the truce tent at Safwan Airfield in southern Iraq at the end of Operation DESERT STORM and briefly examines actions by U.S. and Iraqi forces during the interwar years. The narrative continues by examining the road to war, the initially successful invasion, and the rise of Iraqi insurgent groups before exploring the country's slide toward civil war. This volume concludes with a review of the decision by the George W. Bush administration to "surge" additional forces to Iraq, placing the conduct of the "surge" and its aftermath in the second volume.This study was constructed over a span of 4 years and relied on nearly 30,000 pages of hand-picked declassified documents, hundreds of hours of original interviews, and thousands of hours of previously unavailable interviews. Original interviews conducted by the team included President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretaries of Defense Leon Panetta and Robert Gates, Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and every theater commander for the war, among many others.
