Il Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) non nasce tedesco. Il suo nome originale era LT vz. 38, ed era il miglior carro armato cecoslovacco realizzato tra le due guerre. Ebbe però fortuna e sostanziale utilizzo solo in un altro esercito, quello tedesco che ribattezzò il mezzo Pz.Kpfw.38(t). Nella Wehrmacht, questo carro armato divenne uno dei simboli della Blitzkrieg, combattendo nell'avanguardia delle unità corazzate tedesche. Fu quindi così che nella primavera del 1940, i carri armati costruiti a Praga distrussero i veicoli britannici e francesi che due anni prima non erano riusciti a venire in aiuto della Cecoslovacchia...

The Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) was not born German. Its original name was LT vz. 38, and was the best Czechoslovak tank made between the wars. However, it only had luck and substantial use in another army, the German army, which renamed the vehicle Pz.Kpfw.38(t). In the Wehrmacht, this tank became one of the symbols of the Blitzkrieg, fighting in the vanguard of the German armoured units. Thus it was that in the spring of 1940, the Prague-built tanks destroyed the British and French vehicles that had failed to come to the aid of Czechoslovakia two years earlier...

Die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit den ¿Ursachen¿ der österreichischen Niederlage im Jahre 1866 ist so alt wie der Krieg gegen das aufstrebende Preußen selbst. Bereits unmittelbar nach dem Krieg wurde die Suche nach den Gründen der Misserfolge eifrig vorangetrieben. Man glaubte damals, die Schuld in den Fehlentscheidungen der Heeresleitung und speziell in der Person des Oberkommandierenden der k.k. Nordarmee, Feldzeugmeister Ludwig von Benedek, gefunden zu haben. Diese einseitige Erklärung und die Debatte über die sogenannte ,Schuldfrage' wurde später differenzierter gesehen. Im 20. Jahrhundert suchte man die Hintergründe der Niederlage einerseits auf einer politischen, andererseits auf einer militärischen Ebene, wobei beide Aspekte miteinander eng verflochten sind. Als Untersuchungsobjekte der militärischen Sichtweise werden auch heutzutage hauptsächlich die Entwicklung der Waffentechnik, die (strategisch-) operativen Fehler während des Feldzuges und die infolge der drastischen Sparpolitik auftretenden Mängel der k.k. Armee definiert. Wenig Aufmerksamkeit schenkt man hingegen dem taktischen Verhalten auf dem Schlachtfeld. Im Jahre 1866 zog Österreich mit einer fast 60 Jahre alten Taktik in den Krieg gegen Preußen, die auf einer Überschätzung der historischen Tradition militärischer Werte basierte.Der vorliegende Band nimmt genau diesen Aspekt unter die Lupe. Im Kontext bewaffneter Konflikte seit den Revolutions- und Koalitionskriegen gegen Frankreich wird die österreichische militärische Doktrin, insbesondere die Taktik, vorgestellt und systematisch analysiert. Dabei setzt sich diese Abhandlung kritisch mit dem rückständigen Rekrutierungs- sowie Ausbildungssystem der Zeit auseinander und lässt auch Themen wie Uniformierung und Ausrüstung, Alltagsleben der Soldaten oder Kommunikation nicht unberührt. In den Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung rücken jedoch erstens der seitens der Österreicher verachtete Gebrauch von Feuerwaffen sowie zweitens der unerschütterliche Glaube an die Unbesiegbarkeit der eigenen geschlossenen Gefechtsformationen. Eine besondere Rolle wurde hier dem Bajonettangriff zugesprochen. Es werden des Weiteren das Zusammenwirken der Waffengattungen im Krieg aufgezeigt und auf die komplexen Zusammenhänge strategischer und taktischer Vorstellungen hingewiesen. Es wird erkennbar, dass die k.k. österreichische Armee zu einer der letzten ,napoleonischen' Streitkräfte überhaupt gehörte und mit ihrer bewunderungswürdig mutigen, aber hoffnungslos veralteten Kampfweise im industriellen Zeitalter auf verlorenem Boden stand.
