  • von Steven R. Brydon
    62,00 - 172,00 €

In this book, Steven R. Brydon analyzes American war propaganda spanning from the Spanish-American War through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Brydon argues that many of these wars were fought based on false or misleading narratives, beginning with blaming Spain for the sinking of the Maine and continuing, most recently, with charges that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and was involved in the terrorist attacks of September 11. Research has shown that well-told stories can affect the public's beliefs, attitudes, and actions, and Brydon has identified some of these recurring stories that have been told to support and sustain each war during this time period. Using Fisher's narrative paradigm, Brydon critically evaluates these ';war stories' to determine if they possessed narrative coherence and fidelity that provided good reasons to go to war, rather than simply the appearance of these qualities. The responsibility, Brydon stresses, is on the media and on academics to view future war narratives through a critical lens, in order to best inform the American people. Scholars of media studies, history, military studies, American studies, and international relations will find this book particularly useful.

No period of United States history is more important and still less understood than Reconstruction. Now, at the sesquicentennial of the Reconstruction era, Vernon Burton and Brent Morris bring together the best new scholarship on the critical years after the Civil War and before the onset of Jim Crow, synthesizing social, political, economic, and cultural approaches to understanding this crucial period.Reconstruction was the most progressive period in United States history. Although marred by frequent violence and tragedy, it was a revolutionary era that offered hope, opportunity, and against all odds, a new birth of freedom for all Americans. Even though many of the gains of Reconstruction were rolled back and replaced with a repressive social and legal regime for African Americans, the radical spark was never fully extinguished. Its spirit fanned back into flame with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and its ramifications remain palpable to this day.

On the 14th of August 1941, a Polish monk named Maximilian Maria Kolbe was murdered in Auschwitz.Kolbe's life had been remarkable. Fiercely intelligent and driven, he founded a movement of Catholicism and spent several years in Nagasaki, ministering to the 'hidden Christians' who had emerged after centuries of oppression. A Polish nationalist as well as a monk, he gave sanctuary to fleeing refugees and ran Poland's largest publishing operation, drawing the wrath of the Nazis. His death was no less remarkable: he volunteered to die, saving the life of a fellow prisoner. It was an act that profoundly transformed the lives of two Japanese men. Tomei Ozaki was just seventeen when the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, destroying his home and his family. Masatoshi Asari worked on a farm in Hokkaido during the war and was haunted by the inhumane treatment of prisoners in a nearby camp. Forged in the crucible of an unforgiving war, both men drew inspiration from Kolbe's sacrifice, dedicating their lives to humanity and justice. In The Martyr and the Red Kimono, award-winning author Naoko Abe weaves together a deeply moving and inspirational true story of resistance, sacrifice, guilt and atonement.

  • von Fidele Loria
    37,00 €

In the darkest days of his life, Fedele Loria put a quill pen on paper and told his story. As a prisoner during the First World War, he was forced to experience every human emotion in the extreme. Despair and hopelessness overwhelm his companions on Christmas Eve 1917. We see hope for the future when he says, "So many times have I dreamed of my beautiful liberty." He tells us in his diary about the mundane daily life in a concentration camp. He describes to us the poignant and touching last hours of his mortally wounded friend. The depth of his thoughts, his faith in God, his love of family, and his deeply felt compassion, are woven into the fabric of his writing. Presented in his original diary pages, hand scripted in Italian.

These are the war memoirs of Gil Mock, as told to his son-in-law, Robert E. Lee.1940 - Sapper Gilbert Mock, British Expeditionary Force is ordered to blow up a bridge over the River Somme. Why? To buy time for over 300,000 of his comrades to be evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk.Today, this necessary rearguard action fought by men like Gil is largely overlooked whenever the remarkable events of Operation Dynamo are celebrated, but many were killed or spent the next five years in prisoner of war camps. Gil, however, despite his parents receiving a 'missing in action, believed dead' telegram from the War Office, made an eventful 350 mile journey (despite his bad feet!) to St Malo and the Last Boat Home.

»The Two Faces of Destruction. Rafael Lemkins UN-Genocide-Convention and the Expulsion of the Germans«: For the father of the UN Genocide Convention of 1948, Raphael Lemkin, the expulsion of Germans from parts of Eastern Europe could also be considered a genocidal »destruction of national groups as such«. When the German Bundestag joined the UN Convention in 1954, it adopted Lemkin's perspective. With the growing importance of the Holocaust in the culture of remembrance, genocide was temporarily equated with »extermination« and the annihilation of Jews. However, the term has now expanded again in the context of addressing the issue of colonialism.

This book is an Historical Account (some may say it is a Museum Exhibit all by itself) of the USS SOLOMONS CVE 67 and U860 which was sunk by the USS Solomons CVE 67. It is told by the crewmen and their photos. Its in the format of a Family Photo Album, by the time you finish reading this book, you will know these men Personally. This book makes it blatantly clear how important it is that we talk to our Veterens, record their stories and make copies of their photos. Who would have ever thought that 60 men could have enough stories to fill 547 pages, and over 810 photos, and documents, or that they would be so Happy! And willing to share Their Memories. Additionally, this book shows just how little time we have left to record their memories.Since I started this project in February of 2002, until now, March 2005, five of the men that contributed to this book have already passed away. They will never get to see the book that they helped write. They are now Gone Forever! BUT! They will now be Remembered Forever!, along with their stories and photos. The five men are:David R. Green S1/c, USS Solomons CVE 67; Passed Away 27 April 2002, Age 77Frank S. Rojewski S1/c USS Solomons CVE 67; Passed Away 10 May 2003 Age 76Joseph Ernest Comeau S1/c, USS Solomons CVE 67 (My Dad); Passed Away 26 June 2003, Age 77Adolf Lundquist, U860 Crewman(U860 was sunk by USS Solomons CVE 67); Passed Away December 2003, Age 90Joseph Montana, USS Solomons CVE 67; Passed Away 12 January 2005, Age 78Read this book. Then talk to the Veteran that you know, write down His or Her stories and make copies of any photos. Put them in a folder, give each of His or Her Family members a copy, so that the Veteran will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!OUR VETERENS HAVE EARNED THE RIGHT TO BE REMEMBERED!!THANK YOU!! REVIEWSJoseph Comeau's book on the history of this can-do carrier and her World War II crew reads like a veteran's scrapbook, which it is in a way. There's no narrative in the traditional sense; the book consists of first-hand accounts, rare personal snapshots, and reproductions of contemporary documents, such as a "Welcome Aboard" pamphlet produced for new arrivals aboard the SOLOMONS. Comeau's father, Joseph E. Comeau, Sr., served aboard the SOLOMONS, and the book is a tribute to Comeau Sr. and his shipmates. The book is a wealth of obscure photos and the small details of life aboard a "jeep" carrier during the Atlantic War.Doug Buchanan, Editor of Anchor Watch The Official Journal of the Historic Naval Ships Association, July 2005

Gaje Singh strove to improve the lives of the peasantry and labourers by revolting against the powers that he believed embodied the bourgeoisie. He had to flee to avoid arrest but ended up getting involved with the Naxalites. His progeny sank deeper into the quagmire, no matter how hard they tried to extricate themselves. The system they were fighting against progressed despite wars, calamities, poverty, and violence, moving towards economic liberalisation, technological revolution, and self-reliance; however, this progress did not make much of a difference to the lives of the destitute. Notwithstanding this, they did not lose hope, as was the case with a captive young Maoist who, despite all hardships and disadvantages, still believed that the dawn of justice was somewhere on the horizon.

  • von Gerald A. McCarthy
    47,00 €

Gerald McCarthy enlisted in the Marines at 17 and volunteered for Vietnam. After the war he went AWOL, then to civilian jails and military brigs and finally to a Navy psychiatric ward, where he witnessed patient-attempted suicides. Medically discharged, he returned home to upstate New York and piecework in shoe factories. Written in two voices--one lucid, one dreamlike--his memoir delivers a jump-cut narrative of his troubled adolescence, his wartime experiences and his struggle to come unstuck from his own life.

The American Republic's founders debated whether to have a government based on direct democracy (in which the general population decided public policy questions, as in a New England town meeting) or representative democracy (in which those decisions were made by senators and congressmen on behalf of the general population). A related issue was whether the general population should have the "right of instruction" which gave citizens authority to expel from office government officials who disobeyed the desires of the population. The right of instruction is now largely forgotten but in former times was considered so important that it was routinely included in state constitutions. This book examines the competition between direct democracy and representative democracy in the United States, focusing particularly on the doctrine of instruction, through the lens of the pre-presidential career of Abraham Lincoln.

  • von Dan Moore

""Dan Moore joined the Marines to serve in Vietnam and contribute to the anticipated American victory over communism. After completing officer training and artillery school, he deployed as a forward observer with an infantry company. His letters home described day-to-day events and revealed a growing skepticism about the war. During the Battle of Hue City, Moore lost his assistant forward observer, soon followed by another close friend. Fighting to maintain equilibrium, he suppressed his critical views of the war, even after returning home to oversee Marine recruit training. His memoir unpacks his letters, his recollections of the war and 50 years of introspection."-Provided by publisher"--

From Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author Rick Atkinson (Liberation Trilogy) comes an eyewitness account of the war against Iraq and a vivid portrait of a remarkable group of soldiers. "A beautifully written and memorable account of combat from the top down and bottom up as the 101st Airborne commanders and front-line grunts battle their way to Baghdad.... A must-read."-Tom BrokawFor soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division, the road to Baghdad began with a midnight flight out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in late February 2003. For Rick Atkinson, who would spend nearly two months covering the division for The Washington Post, the war in Iraq provided a unique opportunity to observe today's U.S. Army in combat. Now, in this extraordinary account of his odyssey with the 101st, Atkinson presents an intimate and revealing portrait of the soldiers who fight the expeditionary wars that have become the hallmark of our age. At the center of Atkinson's drama stands the compelling figure of Major General David H. Petraeus, described by one comrade as "the most competitive man on the planet." Atkinson spent virtually all day every day at Petraeus's elbow in Iraq, where he had an unobstructed view of the stresses, anxieties, and large joys of commanding 17,000 soldiers in combat. And all around Petraeus, we see the men and women of a storied division grapple with the challenges of waging war in an unspeakably harsh environment. With the eye of a master storyteller, a brilliant military historian puts us right on the battlefield. In the Company of Soldiers is a compelling, utterly fresh view of the modern American soldier in action.

The 78th Division was considered to be one of the best divisions of the British Army during the Second World War, due to its high morale and excellent leadership, and General Montgomery believed it to be the best mountain warfare division in the British Eighth Army. This view was shared by many senior commanders, such as Lieutenant General Charles Allfrey, commander of V Corps, who claimed the 78th Division was the "finest fighting division of any that I had the privilege to have in 'V' Corps." This is a detailed work, complete with eight large scale coloured maps, on the attacks across the Senio and Santerno rivers from 9th to 25th April 1945. Divided into two parts - the Central History and Unit Accounts - it provides an important history of attack and counterattack, and the stiff resistance of a determined foe.

This is the story of Lieutenant-General Horrocks' famous 30 Corps, from its arrival in France during Operation Overlord in June 1944, through to the end of the war with Germany. It relates how the corps fought, and where, and is illustrated with 46 good colour maps. 30 Corps engaged in the capture of Antwerp, the advance to Arnhem, the Battle of the Ardennes, the Reichswald Forest, and was also heavily involved in the fighting that preceded the Rhine crossings. This is a well-thought-out large format history that was originally published by the BAOR c.1946, in a limited edition. A superb corps history of often difficult and bloody operations.
